NATIONAL VISION BOARD DAY
National Vision Board Day on the second Saturday in January encourages us to set our goals in a visual way. Get out the sticky notes, markers, and inspiration and start plotting your goals for the new year!
Vision board parties began in 2010 between a group of friends as a way for people to get together in a fun environment to set goals, cast a vision and dream out loud in a tangible way. They then mount on their completed vision boards on their walls where they would see them every day. Seeing their hopes and dreams helps set in motion these visions and ideas to become a reality.
Many actors, musicians, fashion and entertainment-based people have been participating in this since its inception. Vision boards help people remember their goals and concepts on a daily basis.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!
NEW ORLEANS โ The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands.โฏFor over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Hereโs when and how to participate:
City of New Orleans Extends Opportunities to Recycle Christmas Trees Through Friday, January 17
NEW ORLEANS โ The City of New Orleans today announce the extension of Christmas tree collections. Residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a Christmas tree pickup through Friday, Jan. 17 if their tree was not collected this week. Requests can also be made by visiting https://nola311.org/.
After the 3-1-1 request is made, residents should immediately place their tree on the curb in a position that is easy for the contractor to retrieve it. Residents should also leave the trees in place until they are removed, as the contractorโs route may vary.
Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel. Lighting and all ornamentation must be removed before recycling pick up. Residents should also try to remove plastic bases from their trees. However, wooden bases are acceptable.
The program is coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and the Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Army National Guard (LANG).
The trees will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter to be dropped off in the spring in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The project benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment while also providing valuable training hours for pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment.

The Christmas season has come to a close, and you might be wondering what to do with your tree.
Jefferson Parish officials are reminding residents of its Christmas tree recycling program as residents get ready to ring in the new year.
According to the parish, residents in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte can bring real Christmas trees with no lights, garland, tinsel, ornaments, tree stands or plastic bags to 400 David Drive or 6440 Lapalco Blvd. from Jan. 4 through Jan. 14.
Parish officials also said residents can place their trees on their curbs on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to be collected on Jan. 9, 10 or 11.
Flocked, painted and artificial trees will not be collected.
Parish officials said the recycled trees will be used to build wave-dampening fences to reduce coastal erosion in the Barataria Basin.

JANUARY 10 - 12, 2025
New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center
Fan Expo New Orleans features โBack to the Futureโ panels, comics and cosplay Jan. 10-12
Claudia Wellsโ first film role was in โBack to the Futureโ as Jennifer Parker, Marty McFlyโs patient, encouraging girlfriend. Wells had been acting on television for several years before the 1985 film, and she landed the role as Jennifer after a long audition in front of writer Bob Gale, director Robert Zemeckis and producers Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy.
Filming โBack to the Futureโ was a great experience, Wells says. But after her mother was diagnosed with cancer, Wells decided to retire from acting and passed on returning for โBack to the Future Part IIโ in 1989. Actor Elisabeth Shue was cast as Jennifer for the seriesโ second and third films.
Wells went on to open a menโs clothing store, and her shop, Armani Wells, recently marked its 34th anniversary. As for โBack to the Future,โ it was a fun moment that she left in the past โ until around 2012 when she was invited to attend a reunion at a comic con in Burbank, California.
โโBack to the Futureโ had started to become such a big deal, and I would get fans coming in [to the store] from all over the world,โ Wells says. โYouโd see people with a camera around their neck. I had people from the Netherlands and Australia and Japan and everywhere.โ
Over the last decade, Wells has frequently participated in โBack to the Futureโ panels at fan conventions around the world. Sheโll next be at Fan Expo New Orleans this weekend for a panel and to sign autographs and take photos.
There are a number of events celebrating the 40th anniversary of โBack to the Futureโ at this yearโs Fan Expo New Orleans, which takes place Friday, Jan. 10, through Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The annual fan convention celebrates all things comics, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, anime and gaming, and will feature celebrity meet-and-greets, panels, workshops, cosplay competitions, comic book sales and artists displaying their works.
Michael J. Fox โ who has done fewer public appearances in the last decade due to living with Parkinsonโs disease โ and Christopher Lloyd are among the 11 Fan Expo guests who took part in โBack to the Future.โ Theyโll join actors Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson and musician Huey Lewis on Friday, Jan. 10, for a panel sharing stories and answering questions about the film. Comics writer Victor Dandridge will moderate the panel.
Wells will take part in a panel on Sunday, Jan. 12, with more members of the filmโs cast, including Charlie Croughwell, James Tolkan, Harry Waters Jr., Frances Lee McCain and Jeffrey Weissman.
Fan Expo will screen โBack to the Futureโ on Sunday, and there will be an Enchantment Under the Sea dance on Saturday. New Orleans Burlesque performers Ramona Rose and Fox Monroe host a โBack to the Futureโ themed trivia show also on Saturday, and there will be photo ops with the DeLorean time machine, scavenger hunts, film-specific cosplay meetups and other events throughout the weekend.
Thereโs also plenty happening outside of โBack to the Future.โ This yearโs Fan Expo โ organized by a group producing fan conventions across the country โ will feature interview sessions with Andy Serkis, William Shatner, Heather Locklear and Giancarlo Esposito.
Actors Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum will read scenes and tell stories from the TV show โSmallville.โ Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch will talk about their titular roles in โSuperman & Lois.โ Plus, actors Brandon Routh and Dean Cain, who both also played Superman, will be at the convention.
โHazbin Hotelโ creator Vivienne Medrano and voice actors from the adult animated comedy will take part in panels, and other events will feature actors from the Dragon Ball anime series, โOne Pieceโ and โMy Hero Academia.โ There also will be panels and workshops focused on accessibility at fan conventions, the film industry in New Orleans, the history of horror comics and more.
Cosplay workshops and meet-ups run throughout the convention. The weekend includes podcast recordings, karaoke sessions, video game tournaments, a Comics and Cocktails happy hour, drag bingo, foam sword fighting, artist competitions, table top gaming and more.
Several New Orleans fandom organizations also will be present, including the local Star Wars-themed 501st garrison, the Louisiana Ghostbusters and the Krewe of Japan. Two post-expo parties also are planned: The group Anime Soiree will host the Dimensional Dance Party at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Howlinโ Wolf, and there is the Purikura Panic After Party at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Rabbit Hole.
It was almost kismet that Wells ended up in โBack to the Future.โ Wells was cast as Jennifer across from Eric Stoltz, who was originally hired to play Marty. But soon after the audition, a television pilot for โOff the Rack,โ which Wells had filmed the previous spring, was picked up by ABC and suddenly she had to pass on โBack to the Future.โ Wells went on to film six more episodes for the TV comedy with Ed Asner and Eileen Brennan, while โBack to the Futureโ began production.
Over on the film set, though, things with Stoltz werenโt quite working out and the part of Marty was recast with Michael J. Fox. Because of the break and a desire to have a love interest closer in height to Fox, Wells was called back to play Jennifer.
โFans have expressed to me how important the role of Jennifer was,โ Wells said recently from her home in Los Angeles. โIf Jennifer hadnโt signed โI love youโ with the phone number on the clock tower flyer, Marty wouldnโt have had it in the โ50s to know when the [lightening] was going to stop the clock โฆ And other people have pointed out that โMarty really got through it because of his love for you.โโ
For Wells, participating in these fan events has been rewarding. She says she loves hearing about what โBack to the Futureโ has meant to people who grew up with the film, but it has also given her a chance to become closer with fellow stars Christopher Lloyd, James Tolkan, Donald Fullilove and Lea Thompson.
โWeโre a bit of crew, a bit of a family, and theyโre very special people to me,โ Wells says. โWe share this camaraderie of having all taken part in this amazing experience. As fun as it was to do the movie, for me, the most fun is what the movie has provided as part of my life today.โ
Fan Expo tickets are $39-$60 per day and $89 for 3-day passes. Find more info at fanexpohq.com/fanexponeworleans.

Louisiana Supreme Court upholds state authority to clear homeless encampments
Nolan Mckendry,
The Louisiana Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the stateโs authority to clear unauthorized homeless encampments from public property, dissolving a lower courtโs injunction that had temporarily blocked such actions.
The decision, issued on Thursday, affirms the constitutional power of the Louisiana State Police and other state agencies to enforce laws protecting public health and safety.
The controversy began on Nov. 22, when State Police began distributing โNotice to Vacateโ flyers to individuals living in unauthorized encampments.
The notices cited state law prohibiting camping on public property and provided a 24-hour deadline for vacating, along with resources for assistance and relocation. The initiative came ahead of high-profile events like the Bayou Classic, Sugar Bowl, Super Bowl, and Mardi Gras โ all major tourism draws for New Orleans.
Three days later, on Nov. 25, plaintiffs sought a temporary restraining order to block the stateโs actions, accusing officials of prioritizing the โaesthetic comfortโ of tourists over the rights of unhoused individuals.
The plaintiffsโ legal challenge argued that the stateโs actions violated local ordinances and overstepped its authority, demanding compliance with municipal rules established by the City of New Orleans.
On Dec. 13, Orleans Civil District Court Judge Lori Jupiter granted the restraining order, imposing restrictions on state agencies.
Judge Jupiterโs ruling mandated that state officials must notify individuals living in encampments that they are free to leave, provide 24-hour notice before clearing encampments, and avoid destroying or disposing of personal property without due process.
The Louisiana Supreme Court found the lower courtโs ruling improper, stating that it โunconstitutionally interferes with the police powers of the State of Louisianaโ as outlined in stateโs constitution. โThe district courtโs judgment improperly interferes with the stateโs exercise of its constitutionally authorized police power,โ the court wrote, ordering the immediate dissolution of the injunction.
Attorney General Liz Murrill praised the Supreme Court decision on X, saying, โState Police has every legal right to clear the encampments. I appreciate the Louisiana Supreme Court for coming to a common-sense conclusion on this important public safety issue. Iโm proud of the hard work of my Solicitor Generalโs Office & Deputy Solicitor General Zach Faircloth.โ
Gov. Jeff Landry also weighed in, highlighting the timing of the decision in light of recent and upcoming events.
โThis comes at a very important time given the events of last week, the upcoming Super Bowl, and Mardi Gras,โ Landry posted on X.
The issue of homelessness in Louisiana remains a significant challenge. A 2023 study by the National Alliance to End Homelessness reported that while more than 5,000 state residents were permanently housed that year, 8,564 individuals entered into homelessness during the same period.
Critics argue that clearing encampments addresses symptoms rather than the root causes of homelessness, such as lack of affordable housing and mental health resources.
State officials, however, emphasize the importance of balancing public safety with compassion.
n its decision, the Louisiana Supreme Court underscored that the case is โnot about keeping New Orleans beautiful; it is about public safety and health.โ
This Supreme Court cited the attack on Bourbon Street on New Yearโs Day, which heightened concerns about security ahead of major events.
With the courtโs ruling now settled, state agencies are poised to resume enforcement actions.

St. John Fools of Misrule Twelfth Night March
Date: Jan. 11
Location: Historic Downtown Covington
The St. John Fools of Misrule heralds the arrival of Carnival season on the Northshore with its 14th annual Feast of Fools and March, taking place Saturday, January 11, 2025. The "Fools" (men) and "Jewels" (women) of this marching krewe take to the streets of Covington on the Saturday closest to Twelfth Night, also known as King's Day or The Epiphany.
The St. John Fools of Misrule take their name from the historic St. John District in Covington through which they march each year, and the โFoolish Traditionโ itself comes from an ancient English custom whereby men โclamored along the evening streets creating unruliness with cowbells and whips while delivering jeers and spankings to those caught on the street unaware.โ
This procession through Covington's historic St. John District begins first with a members-only "Feast of Fools"ย at 4:00 p.m. at Seiler Bar and Columbia Street Tap Room & Grill (434 N. Columbia St.). Then, at 6:00 p.m., the beautifully costumed krewe marches from Seiler Bar to the Covington Trailhead to crown the "Lord of Misrule." The revelers, including flambeaux, a brass band and masked marchers in extravagant medieval attire, then set out to carouse through downtown Covington. whimsical /wษชmzษชk(ษ)l/
Definition: Characterized by or subject to sudden, unpredictable changes; light-hearted and slightly odd or eccentric.
Origin: The term "whimsical" derives from the 16th century English word "whim-wham" which refers to a playful or fanciful object. It later evolved into "whimsical", with the suffix "-ical" added to form an adjective.
Example: The artist's whimsical paintings often featured flying elephants and dancing trees.
The term "whimsical" is often synonymous with "fanciful". It is used to describe something that is not overly serious, but imaginative and playful. When someone or something exhibits a whimsical quality, it means that they are unpredictable or given to whimsy - a form of fanciful behaviour. This could be seen in various forms such as a whimsical piece of artwork that deviates from the norm, a whimsical tale filled with extraordinary characters and settings, or even a person's whimsical decision to wear mismatched socks. Thus the word "fanciful" perfectly encapsulates the essence of "whimsical".

NATIONAL MILK DAY
National Milk Day on January 11th commemorates the day many think the first milk deliveries in glass bottles began in the United States. Alexander Campbell of the New York Dairy Company professed to the New York State Senate that his company was the first to make these deliveries in 1878.
The United States and Australia export more milk and milk products than any other country. Those products include cheese, yogurt, ice cream, butter, cream, powdered milk, and much more. Throughout the world, more than 6 billion people consume milk and the products we make from it. One of the reasons is because milk provides nutrients such as calcium, potassium, vitamin B12, and vitamin A.
Production History
During the Middle Ages, people called milk the virtuous white liquor because alcoholic beverages were more reliable than water. In 1863, French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur made it possible for milk and other food and drinks to be stored for more extended periods. He developed a method of killing harmful bacteria that is now called pasteurization.
In 1884, an American doctor, Hervey Thatcher of New York City, developed the first modern glass milk bottle. He called it the "Thatcher's Common Sense Milk Jar." He used a waxed paper disk to seal the milk in the glass bottle. Later, in 1932, plastic-coated paper milk cartons were introduced commercially as a consequence of their invention by Victor W. Farris.
Modern industrial processes use milk to produce casein, whey protein, lactose, condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food-additive and industrial products.
Animals
The females of all mammal species can, by definition, produce milk. However, cow milk dominates commercial production. In 2011. FAO estimates cows produced 85% of all milk worldwide. Apart from cattle, many kinds of livestock contribute milk used by humans for dairy products. These animals include buffalo, goat, sheep, camel, donkey, horse, reindeer, and yak. Like cattle, their milk produces cream, butter, yogurt, kefir, ice cream, and cheese, too.

After delaying further injections, 12 days later a more pure form of insulin was given by Dr. James Collip, ultimately saving his life.

As a Founding Father of the United States, Hamilton served his country defending the U.S. Constitution on and off the battlefield. George Washington trusted him as the country's first Secretary of Treasury and in that role, Hamilton created enduring financial cornerstones. A rivalry between Hamilton and Aaron Burr dominates the history books, too.

Momma Gets a New Convertible
A staged photograph in front of Commanderโs Palace on Washington Avenue and Coliseum Street, a car salesman (right) hands the keys to a gentleman who will dutifully hand them over to his wife who is already seated behind the wheel of her new Packard convertible. The couple no doubt celebrated the occasion with lunch at Commanderโs. Hard to believe, but at the time women could not buy an automobile in their own name.

The Travelerโs Hotel
The Travelerโs Hotel was located at 441 โ 443 St. Charles Avenue at the corner of Poydras Street. In 1902 it was Pennโs Saloon, and the rooms upstairs were rented. This photograph dates from the 1930s by Charles L. Franck. This corner would be where One Shell Square (Hancock Whitney Building) is now situated.
The ground floor corner was occupied by the United Cigar Store, one of several they had in New Orleans. To the right of the cigar store was Sam Gluckโs Restaurant, whose primary location was at 124 Royal Street. He did have two other locations, this one at 437 St. Charles and another at 1115 Canal Street. To the left was the DeLuxe Lunch Room and the Central Barber Shop on the Poydras Street side.

But here's the news: for the last 20 years he has been working in his studio on Elysian Fields producing thought provoking, original and unique artworks. On Thursday, January 16th, he will open his exhibition for public viewing at the world's leading architect Frank Gehry designed Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi Mississippi titled: Safe Passage.
In addition, Jimmy will be signing copies of his new book James Macdonell: Retrospective 2004-2024 published by Artvoices Books Publishing. The book is scheduled to be released Worldwide on April 22nd, 2025, but you will have an opportunity to get an advanced signed copy at the museum exhibition.

We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

GW Fins Restaurant๏ปฟ
New Orleans shines brightest in moments of despair. We know thereโs no way to get through hardship without coming together - that is a part of who we are. We are a city truly defined by community.
As we continue to hold the victims and their families of the New Yearโs Day Bourbon Street tragedy in our hearts, we are proud to partner with the Louisiana Restaurant Associationโs Fleur du Coeur: A Culinary Tribute.
From January 13-19, 2025, please join us and other French Quarter restaurants and bars in celebrating the vibrant culinary traditions of New Orleans while supporting the New Orleans New Yearโs Day Tragedy Fund.
At GW Fins, all proceeds from the sales of one of our signature dishes, Lobster Dumplings, will be donated directly to the fund, which serves as a resource to provide assistance to the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,January 13
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes theyโll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
โWeโre honored to work with this yearโs pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,โ said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this yearโs performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.โ

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
