NATIONAL CHEESE LOVER'S DAY
On National Cheese Lover's Day, don't feel bleu, throw a feta or act capriciously. January 20th is a gouda day to kummin over and have some cheddar or asiago or fontina!
There is no firm evidence of how humans discovered cheese making. But legend tells us it was likely that someone created the first cheese by chance. Thousands of years ago, people transported milk and stored it in sheep's stomachs. Left to sit a few days, the proteins would separate into curds and whey. From there, preserving the solids with salt may have seemed a logical next step. Salt was a highly valued preservative in ancient times.
The earliest record of cheese making dates back to 5,500 BCE in what is now Poland. Today there are over 1,400 varieties of cheese.
Basic Cheese Making
The basic principles behind making cheese are quite simple. Let the milk sour (or scientifically, coagulating the casein protein). Then separate the curds (solids) from the whey (liquid). The curds are then salted and left to age.
Bacteria, enzymes, or fungi may be added at various stages. These and the type of milk, temperature, time, and moisture are all controlled to produce the desired taste, color, and texture. Cheesemakers also add herbs and spices for additional variety and flavor.
The nutritional value of cheese varies depending on the variety. Cottage and mozzarella cheese are at the lower end of fat and calories per serving, while mascarpone and cream cheese pack it on. Marscapone makes desserts like tiramisu rich and creamy.
For the Love of Cheese
For cheese lovers who think one day is just not enough to celebrate cheese, National Day Calendar presents a calendar full of cheesy celebrations. There are 18 other cheese-specific holidays on the calendar. Check out this shortlist of tasty cheese-based celebrations:

The Mystic Krewe of Louisianians commissioned me to paint the 75th Anniversary of the Washington Mardi Gras poster!! A few people have asked about the differences in options and I hope that I’m able to answer below !
“lithograph” option: Signed on an 18x24” poster-like paper. We ordered a “short run” of these, so once sold out, we will not have this option again.
Large paper print option: Signed and numbered in edition of 100. The image measures 22x29”. Looks exactly the same, only printed on textured, watercolor archival paper.
Canvas options: There’s only 50 printed in whichever custom size that is ordered. Signed and numbered in order as received.

Organ demonstrations
Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.
Barbara S. Beckman Music Room, 520 Royal Street
Free admission and no RSVP required
Join THNOC staff for a short program exploring the history of the beautifully restored Aeolian residential player pipe organ. Listen to a musical demonstration and discover the significance of this rare and technologically advanced musical instrument.
In the early 20th century, having a player organ in the home was a luxury reserved for the most opulent residences, allowing the owner to have access to recorded music before radios and phonographs were commonplace. Tobacco magnate William Ratcliffe Irby remodeled the property at 520 Royal Street—now part of THNOC’s exhibition center—to serve as his personal residence starting in 1918. In the process he installed a player organ in the entry room to his lavish third-floor apartment. The instrument, built by the Aeolian Company of New York, is one of a handful that has survived to this day in its original location and in working condition, after a meticulous restoration by the Holtkamp Organ Company.

City of New Orleans Reminds Jackson Square Artists of Permit Deadline
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans issued a reminder to all current permit holders to renew their permits for selling art on Jackson Square in the French Quarter. The deadline for all current permit holders to renew is Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Artists who sell art on or around Jackson Square are required to obtain an Occupational License and Mayoralty Permit from the Department of Finance’s Bureau of Revenue. Eligible permits are either Artist A permits to sell art on Jackson Square or Artist B permits to sell art only in Pirates Alley.
All permit holders who wish to renew must apply in person during business hours (Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the Bureau of Revenue office located at City Hall (1300 Perdido St., Room 1W15). Artists must also present a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay $175.25 in the form of a certified check or money order payable to the City of New Orleans. For applicants over the age of 65, the fee is $25.25.
All permit holders who fail to renew their existing permit on or before Jan. 31 will be required to re-apply as a new applicant. A maximum of 200 Artist A permits may be issued, according to City code. There is no limit for Artist B permits.
Once all renewals have been completed, the remaining Artist A permit slots will be included in a lottery.
Similar to the permit renewal process, applicants must be present during the lottery, possess a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay $175.25 in the form of a certified check or money order payable to the City of New Orleans. For applicants over the age of 65, the fee is $25.25.
Qualified applicants are defined as persons who either have a current Artist B permit or have an application for a new Artist A permit currently on file. Artist B permit holders who seek to upgrade to an Artist A permit must also present their current Artist B permit.
For more information, contact the Bureau of Revenue Application Unit via phone at (504) 658-1630, (504) 658-1621 or (504) 658-694 or email Todd M. Ecker at tmecker@nola.gov.

What is the largest desert in the world?
Antarctica
Antarctica, the southernmost continent on earth, is often recognized as the largest desert in the world. This may come as a surprise to those who associate deserts with heat and sand, but the definition of a desert is, in fact, a region that receives very little precipitation. Antarctica, with its annual precipitation of just 200mm on the coast and much less inland, qualifies as a desert. It covers a vast area of about 14 million square kilometers, making it the largest desert on the planet, surpassing the Sahara, often thought to be the largest, by a considerable margin. The extreme cold, fierce winds, and lack of rainfall make Antarctica an incredibly harsh and inhospitable environment.

UNEASY LIES THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN, BUT WHICH ONE WILL WEAR IT?
England’s King Henry II and his Queen Elinor of Aquitaine had four sons, the eldest died, leaving the other three to squabble over who came next. Unfortunately, Henry and Elinor disagreed over which one should take the crown next.
That’s the arc of The Lion in Winter, Playmakers Theater’s next production. Directed by Chase Hefte, the production chronicles the royal gathering at Christmas 1183 as the family meets to hash out the succession. It does not go well leaving Elinor to comment, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”
The Lion in Winter crackles with brilliant scenes between the royals as they plot and scheme and form alliances to promote their choice for king.
The production opens Saturday, Jan. 20 and runs through Sunday, February 4. Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available through www.BonTempsTix.com.

NATIONAL BUTTERCRUNCH DAY
National Buttercrunch Day on January 20th recognizes the flavorful toffee candy that comes in several varieties.
Buttercrunch is a combination of toffee, covered with chocolate. It has a crunchy texture and a caramel flavor. Variations on the recipe include toasted almond sprinkles.
Making buttercrunch calls for a good candy thermometer and some cooking experience. Creating the toffee involves caramelizing sugar at high temperatures, which requires precision, timing, and the right tools and safety techniques for a successful outcome. Follow recipes closely. The stage the sugar is supposed to reach (usually the hard-crack stage) will determine when you remove the sugar from the heat. You also have to move quickly and safely. Sugar burns at 300°F + leave blisters and scars.
When you've mastered candy-making skills, the results are delicious and definitely worth sharing. Buttercrunch and other candy treats make terrific gifts during the holidays and throughout the year. It also stores well for a time. Keep it to serve over ice cream or add as a garnish to cakes and cookies.

Origin: The word "lagniappe" originates from Louisiana French, derived from the Spanish phrase "la yapa," meaning "the addition" or "the extra."
Example: After purchasing a new phone, the store manager surprised the customer with a lagniappe, offering a free phone case as a gesture of appreciation.
A gift is indeed the essence of what "lagniappe" means. It represents an additional item or bonus given to a customer beyond what they expected. This practice is often employed by businesses as a way to enhance customer satisfaction, loyalty, and to create a positive shopping experience. By giving a small gift, a company acknowledges the customer's importance and adds an element of surprise and delight to the transaction, fostering a stronger relationship between the customer and the business.

1930s: Dixie Mill Supply
Located on the corner of Tchoupitoulas and St. Joseph Streets, Dixie Mill Supply has operated out of this 5-story building since 1917, distributing a wide variety of supplies to sugar mills, farms, and other industries in the South. The building shown here in the 1930s in a photograph by Franck-Bertacci Photographers looks much the same today. The small building to the left now has a flat roof, but otherwise the physical plant remains constant.
On the far left of the image is Bartlett Chemicals in the building that now houses the Preservation Resource Center.

Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.
Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.
Location on the Lafitte Greenway
In the fall of 2020, the Thursday market moved to its new home in New Orleans' vibrant Mid-City neighborhood! Located at the Lafitte Greenway and Bayou St. John, it operates year-round.
Check out the responses to Lafitte Greenway's public survey regarding use of the new Lafitte Greenway Plaza - we are thrilled about the overwhelming support for a farmers market in the space!

2024 Full Moon schedule

- Jan. 25 — 12:54 p.m. — Wolf Moon
- Feb. 24 —7:30 a.m. — Snow Moon
- March 25 — 3 a.m. — Worm Moon
- April 23 — 7:49 p.m. — Pink Moon
- May 23 — 9:53 a.m. — Flower Moon
- June 21 — 9:08 p.m. — Strawberry Moon
- July 21 — 6:17 a.m. — Buck Moon
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.
Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.
Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.
Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.
Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.
Related: How to see the eclipse in April
Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.
Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.
Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
