NATIONAL FRUITCAKE TOSS DAY

National Fruitcake Toss Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in January. This fun day challenges us to chuck the fruitcake as far as you can.

Many people receive fruitcakes as gifts sometime during the holiday season. Some people eat this holiday bread while others may re-gift them. There are those who sneakily throw them away and others who will do so openly.

But on the third day of January, another type of fruitcake, ahem, a person comes out of the woodwork. These are the characters who have hoarded them, stored them, and hid them so they can celebrate with a competition of sorts.

HOW TO OBSERVE FRUITCAKE TOSS DAY

Host a fruitcake tossing competition. Invite family members to join you outside with their respective fruitcakes (the ones made with flour, fruit, and nuts) and take turns chucking them as far as they can. Make hot chocolate and prizes. Share your celebration using #FruitcakeTossDay to post on social media.

Attend the Great Fruitcake Toss in Colorado and share your photos on social media using #FruitcakeTossDay.

NATIONAL FRUITCAKE TOSS DAY HISTORY

The first Great Fruitcake Toss was held in Manitou Springs, Colorado on January 3, 1996. Each year the entrants compete to see who can hurl or toss their fruitcakes the farthest.

8 am - 12 pm

New Orleans City Park

Tad Gormley Stadium

Marconi Drive @ Navarre Ave.

Directions and Parking

The Sunday Market is located in the parking lot of Tad Gormley Stadium at the corner of Marconi and Navarre. While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!

RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.

No Cash? No Problem!

All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.

Shop with SNAP!

Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.

Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Here’s when and how to participate:

  • December 26 through January 5 - Drop your trees at these locations:
  • East Bank: Lafitte Greenway, 2930 Lafitte Ave.
  • West Bank: Bodenger Park, 3400 Kansas St.
  • January 6 through January 10 - Place your trees on the curb by 5 a.m. on your regular garbage pick-up day. A recycling truck will follow your regular garbage truck
  • Residents in the French Quarter and Downtown Development District should place their trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9th only

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel, and all ornamentation and lighting should be removed before recycling pick up.

To learn more, go to nola.gov/ChristmasTreeRecycling

The Christmas season has come to a close, and you might be wondering what to do with your tree.

Jefferson Parish officials are reminding residents of its Christmas tree recycling program as residents get ready to ring in the new year.

According to the parish, residents in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte can bring real Christmas trees with no lights, garland, tinsel, ornaments, tree stands or plastic bags to 400 David Drive or 6440 Lapalco Blvd. from Jan. 4 through Jan. 14.

Parish officials also said residents can place their trees on their curbs on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to be collected on Jan. 9, 10 or 11.

Flocked, painted and artificial trees will not be collected.

Parish officials said the recycled trees will be used to build wave-dampening fences to reduce coastal erosion in the Barataria Basin.

Bring the whole family to this comedic rendition of all seven Harry Potter books reenacted in 70 hilarious minutes

After several successful North American tours and over 1,000 performances at Horseshoe Las Vegas, London’s West End hit Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff is coming to the New Orleans area!

Created by two-time Olivier Award–nominated BBC Television actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, and seen by over 1,000,000 Potter fans around the world, the show will cast a spell over the Jefferson Performing Arts Center from December 26 through January 5.

Selling out to crowds around the world, Potted Potter will have you flying off your seat (or broomstick) with laughter. The perfect show for muggles, witches and wizards of all ages, this production of the boy-who-lived’s story combines all seven books into 70 hilarious minutes. The cleverly curated show includes all of your favorite characters, perfect Potter props and even a live Quidditch match!

Starvox Touring and Potted Productions first introduced the fabulously funny show to North American audiences in Toronto in 2012, where it received rave reviews. Over the past several years the show has completed multiple tours across the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Dubai, and Canada. Whether you’re team Gryffindor or don’t know the difference between a Death Eater and Dumbledore, this show is a seriously good time.

BATON ROUGE – The first goal of a better November-December was realized.

Now the Tigers are set to begin what is expected to be an 18-game gauntlet that is called Southeastern Conference play.

The Tigers host Vanderbilt in the conference opener for both teams at 3:30 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Tickets are available at LSUTix.net and in person at the upper concourse windows of the Maravich Center beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The Voice of the Tigers, Chris Blair, and former LSU head coach John Brady will have the call on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Guaranty Media flagship Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge). Roy Philpott and Carolyn Peck will have the television call on ESPN2.

The Tigers enter conference play, 11-2, a three-game improvement from last year in the November-December play. One of Coach Matt McMahon’s mantras in the beginning of the season was for his team to play better in the non-conference and LSU accomplished that with no losses at home and wins over three “power” conference opponents – Kansas State and UCF from the Big 12 and Florida State of the ACC.

LSU is 9-0 at home this season and has an 11-game home winning streak dating back to last season. The Tigers have won three straight since a Dec. 14 loss in Frisco, Texas to SMU.

Vanderbilt is 12-1 on the season under first-year coach Mark Byington. They are one of seven teams in the league with no more than one loss and the league includes the final three remaining undefeated teams in the NCAA – Florida, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Only one team entering league play has more than two losses.

For LSU is the just one of two home games in the first six conference games. After Saturday, LSU will travel to Missouri and Ole Miss before returning home to face Arkansas on Jan. 14, followed by road trips to Texas A&M and Alabama.

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in ‘jump’, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

Late learner

opsimath

/ˈɒpsɪmæθ/

Definition: A person who begins to learn or study late in life.

Origin: The term originates from the Greek "opsimathēs," meaning "late learner," derived from "opso," meaning "late," and "mathesis," meaning "learning."

Example: Despite being an opsimath, she excelled in her studies and inspired her peers with her passion for knowledge.

"Opsimath" refers to a "late learner," encapsulating the essence of individuals who pursue education or knowledge later in life. This term highlights the idea that learning is not confined to a specific age; rather, it can flourish at any stage. Opsimaths often bring unique perspectives and experiences to their studies, enriching the learning environment for both themselves and their peers. Embracing the identity of an opsimath reflects a commitment to lifelong learning, showcasing that curiosity and the desire for growth can emerge at any point, regardless of prior educational background.

A banner night in the PMAC

They had a gymnastics meet like none other before it Friday night in the PMAC.

Yes, LSU won the meet, the No. 2-ranked Tigers practically lapping outmatched Iowa State, 197.300-194.100. The "none other" part was the raising of LSU's 2024 national championship banner to the catwalk high above the arena floor.

Commemorating the first NCAA team title in the program's 50-year history sparked nostalgia but also turned attention to the present — and the future. Just how good did this LSU team look, even without all-star Haleigh Bryant, out indefinitely with an elbow injury?

Well, the Tigers posted their best score in a season opener in eight years, prompting coach Jay Clark to say, "In my time here, it may be our best opening performance top to bottom. I don’t mean mistake free, but we didn’t get distracted by things that could have distracted them.

“We had a 197.300 and I thought we earned every penny of it.”

Even without Bryant, it was a great night for 2024 NCAA floor champion and Paris Olympian Aleah Finnegan, who won or shared first place in every event including the all-around. And it was a great debut for freshman Kailin Chio, who share first place on bars and beam with Finnegan.

As soon as the meet ended they started reconfiguring the PMAC for another curtain raiser, as the LSU men's basketball team hosts Vandy at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in its SEC opener. The LSU women complete the busy weekend in the PMAC Sunday when they host Auburn in their SEC home opener. LSU is coming off a smashing SEC debut, winning 98-64 Thursday at Arkansas.

NATIONAL SPAGHETTI DAY

National Spaghetti Day on January 4th offers an opportunity to pick your sauce and add it to that long, thin cylindrical pasta of Italian and Sicilian origin. Usually made from semolina flour, this pasta has been a worldwide favorite for ages and loved by millions.

There are various pasta dishes based on spaghetti, and the sauce determines most of them. Some examples include spaghetti ala Carbonara, garlic and oil, tomato sauce, meat sauce, bolognese, Alfredo sauce, clam sauce, or other sauces. In addition, we traditionally serve spaghetti dishes topped with grated hard cheeses such as Pecorino Romano, Parmesan, and Grana Padano.

The word spaghetti is plural for the Italian word spaghetto, which is a diminutive of spago, meaning “thin string” or “twine.”

American restaurants offered spaghetti around the end of the 19th century as Spaghetti Italienne (which is believed to have consisted of noodles cooked past al dente and a mild tomato sauce flavored with easily found spices and vegetables such as cloves, bay leaves, and garlic). Decades later, cooks added oregano and basil to many recipes.

Today restaurants offer gift cards like these that make the celebration of National Spaghetti Day easy all year long.

Spaghetti Origins

There is a significant debate on the origin of spaghetti. However, we do know that we've been consuming pasta for many, many years. There are records in the Jerusalem Talmud of itrium, a kind of boiled dough commonly available in Palestine from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD. A 9th-century Arab dictionary describes itriyyaas as string-like shapes made of semolina and dried before cooking. A 1154 writing for the Norman King of Sicily, mentions itriyya as being manufactured and exported from Norman Sicily. Dried pasta became popular in the 14th and 15th centuries due to its easy storage. People stored the dried pasta in ships when exploring the New World. A century later, pasta was present around the globe during the voyages of discovery. (Wikipedia)

On Top of Spaghetti

In March of 2009, the world record for the largest bowl of spaghetti was set and then reset in March of 2010 when a Garden Grove California Buca di Beppo restaurant successfully filled a swimming pool with more than 13,780 pounds of pasta.

Sung to the tune of "On Top of Old Smoky," the fun children's song, "On Top of Spaghetti," was written and originally sung by folk singer Tom Glazer with the Do-Re-Mi Children's Chorus in 1963.

"On top of spaghetti,

All covered with cheese,

I lost my poor meatball,

When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,

And on to the floor,

And then my poor meatball,

Rolled out of the door."

Parking on the Neutral Ground

The idea of parking on the neutral ground (median) is nothing new in New Orleans. Here we see a familiar stretch of the 800 block of Harrison Avenue with two aisles of cars parked on the neutral ground. On the left is the Harrison Food Mart and the Lakeview Theatre (featuring “Duel on the Mississippi” starring Lex Barker and Patricia Medina, a 1955 Western). This popular commercial district still affords shoppers neutral ground parking today.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,January 6

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

We're pleased to announce that Kid Cafe', a free after-school meal program for youth- ages 18 and under, is now underway. In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, No Kid Hungry, and Share Our Strength, the program ensures that low-income children at afterschool program sites across New Orleans have access to nutritious meals during the school year. Kid Cafe' meals are available Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at multiple NORD rec centers. For more information, call us at 504-658-3052.

Parade Route

17th Annual Joan of Arc Procession

MONDAY January 6, 2025, 8 p.m.

REVISED ROUTE AND LATER START TIME THIS YEAR

Joyeux Anniversaire, Jeanne d’Arc!

Celebrating St. Joan of Arc’s birthday and Twelfth Night, this annual walking procession is a medieval-themed theatrical procession, inspired by Joan’s time in 1400s France. Joan of Arc liberated the citizens of Orleans, France, from a British siege in her first victory in 1429—resulting in her moniker “The Maid of Orleans.” Our procession honors our own unofficial patron saint, The Maid of New Orleans: the beloved golden French Quarter statue, a gift to the City of New Orleans from France in the 1950s, and our French history and heritage. It’s a short, family-friendly parade — quirky, whimsical and spiritual.

The procession starts on time at 8 sharp, makes a few pauses for a bit of medieval pageantry, and ends around 9:45 p.m. NOTE THAT THE ORDER OF THE STOPS HAS CHANGED, as the route will be “backwards” compared to previous years.

  • Starts at French Market Place and Barracks, left onto Decatur
  • A pause to sing Happy Birthday at the Joan of Arc statue as we pass it on the Decatur side;
  • Right up Dumaine, left onto Chartres
  • The sword blessing at Saint Louis Cathedral;
  • a toast to the royalty and young Joan “Maid of Honor” in English and French from the balcony of the Historic New Orleans Collection;
  • Left onto Bienville, right onto S. Peters
  • the crowning of the king and king cake ceremony at Oscar Dunn Park (the sidewalk amphitheater across from Jackson Square).
  • NEW THIS YEAR! The PUBLIC is invited to fill the amphitheater risers, where they can enjoy an excellent view of the king cake ceremony and the entire parade. Get your king cake from Bon’s New Orleans Street Food Cafe next to the park, and take your first bite with us during our king cake ceremony!
  • NEW THIS YEAR! Following the king cake ceremony, the parade will continue back to the French Market, passing the statue for a second time on the S. Peters side around 9:45.
  • Ends at French Market Place and Barracks

To maximize accessibility, trainings will be scheduled in neighborhoods across the city.

Narcan training sessions will include free Narcan for all participants, while Stop the Bleed training will cover essential skills for managing bleeding emergencies. As an extra incentive to participate, The Broadside will offer free movie tickets to a screening at the Broad Theater for the first 15 attendees at each of their hosted sessions.

“Hospitality workers are on the front lines of our nightlife, and we’re committed to providing them with the resources they need to respond to emergencies,” said Julia Heath, Policy and Outreach Manager at the Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy. “Through this training series, we’re empowering them with the essential skills and confidence needed to handle life-threatening situations.”

The St. John Fools of Misrule heralds the arrival of Carnival season on the Northshore with its 14th annual Feast of Fools and March, taking place Saturday, January 11, 2025. The "Fools" (men) and "Jewels" (women) of this marching krewe take to the streets of Covington on the Saturday closest to Twelfth Night, also known as King's Day or The Epiphany.

The St. John Fools of Misrule take their name from the historic St. John District in Covington through which they march each year, and the “Foolish Tradition” itself comes from an ancient English custom whereby men “clamored along the evening streets creating unruliness with cowbells and whips while delivering jeers and spankings to those caught on the street unaware.”

This procession through Covington's historic St. John District begins first with a members-only "Feast of Fools" at 4:00 p.m. at Seiler Bar and Columbia Street Tap Room & Grill (434 N. Columbia St.). Then, at 6:00 p.m., the beautifully costumed krewe marches from Seiler Bar to the Covington Trailhead to crown the "Lord of Misrule." The revelers, including flambeaux, a brass band and masked marchers in extravagant medieval attire, then set out to carouse through downtown Covington. Learn more at https://www.foolsofmisrule.org/

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
