SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Small Business Saturday reminds us of the prime shopping opportunities right in our own communities. Not only do the small businesses where we work, live, and play offer numerous gift-giving possibilities, they are hands-on and ready to complete your shopping list with quality, thoughtful gifts.

Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Shop Small movement energizes small business owners to prepare for customers in every way possible. That includes the traditional brick-and-mortar customer and the online shopper. The single-day event continues to grow each year. That means business owners are ready for you to shop their stores!

Small businesses feed our communities. They keep our main streets thriving and employ nearly half of the American workforce. Supporting small businesses means you're supporting your local economy, local business, tax base, schools, and infrastructure. Your holiday shopping will put food on the tables of people you know.

You will be doing your community some good, and you will also be finding quality gifts. Small businesses take pride in their work. They've worked hard for their dream, and it shows in their craftsmanship.

For decades, Mr. Bingle ruled the holidays on Canal Street

By Lissa Capo

Generations of New Orleans children still remember how the holidays were ushered in with a familiar tune: “Jingle, Jangle, Jingle / Here Comes Mr. Bingle / With Another Message From Kris Kringle.” A snowman with holly leaves for wings, Mr. Bingle wore an upside-down ice cream cone for a hat and carried a candy cane wand. As Santa’s helper, Mr. Bingle helped kick off the holiday season in Maison Blanche department stores, promoting toys, books, children’s clothing, household goods, and more.

Mr. Bingle dominated the Canal Street streescape during the holiday season throughout the late 20th century. (THNOC, the Charles L. Franck Studio Collection, 1979.325.10)

Developed by Maison Blanche display director Emile Alline Sr. in 1947, Mr. Bingle is said to have received his name from the initials of the department store: MB. Mr. Bingle was brought to life by Edwin “Oscar” Isentrout, who had previously performed racy puppet shows on Bourbon Street. With the help of Ray Frederick and Harry J. Ory, Isentrout created an enchanting puppet show starring Mr. Bingle in the downtown Maison Blanche building. With Isentrout giving voice to the childlike snowman, crowds flocked to the shows. Isentrout also took Mr. Bingle to visit children all over the city who were unable to make it to Maison Blanche.

Beginning in 1949, a 50-foot high version of Mr. Bingle decorated the front of the Canal Street Maison Blanche every year during the holidays. The beloved character had time on local television as well, with appearances every December on WDSU-TV, heralding the arrival of Christmas. Mr. Bingle, alongside Pete the Penguin and Dr. Walrus, helped promote Maison Blanche products to watching viewers.

Mr. Bingle became such a local icon that he even joined Santa in his yearly arrival at the New Orleans airport, via a special Eastern Airlines Silver Falcon plane. Following their arrival, Mr. Bingle and Santa would parade to various Maison Blanche stores around the city, before ending at the downtown store and its “Toyland” display.

, 1979.325.1717)

Dillard’s Inc. bought the Maison Blanche chain from Mercantile Stores Company Inc. in 1998. Dillard’s, recognizing the cultural importance of Mr. Bingle, distributed a press release after the sale welcoming the popular character. To this day, Mr. Bingle dolls and merchandise are still available at Dillard’s locations and on their website.

After a brief stint at Lakeside Mall, Dillard’s donated the 50-foot papier-mâché figure of Mr. Bingle to the Friends of City Park. Since 2005, the figure has been part of the annual Celebration in the Oaks display, once again heralding the arrival of Christmas to New Orleanians young and old.

20 years of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture GardenThis year, the New Orleans Museum of Art celebrates 20 years of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, one of the city's favorite places for discovery, wonder, and respite. Free and open to all, NOMA's Besthoff Sculpture Garden features world-class artwork from the 19th century to the present day, all set within the unique landscape of South Louisiana.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

LSU

BATON ROUGE – The script seemed very familiar to the fans of LSU Basketball.

For the third straight home game, the Tigers trailed after 20 minutes, this time 26-25 to Northwestern State. But in the end, the Tigers shot over 50 percent from the field in the second half and dominated the final 20 minutes to score a 77-53 win over the Demons at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The 24-point victory margin marked the third-largest margin of victory in a game that LSU trailed at halftime since the 1964-65 season. The biggest was the 36-point victory margin over Nicholls in the 2001-02 season after the Tigers trailed Nicholls, 25-22, before winning 71-35.

LSU (6-1) scored the first five points of the second half after an opening miss by the Demons. Cam Carter took a pass from Corey Chest and hit a three-pointer to give LSU the lead for good at 28-26. Northwestern State turned the ball over and Chest and Carter reversed roles with Chest taking a Carter pass for a 30-26 advantage.

The Demons had a last swing with a three-pointer that cut the game to 30-29 before the Tigers went on a 17-point run over some six minutes of play that ballooned the Tigers lead to 47-29 with 12:49 in the game. The Tigers were never threatened the rest of the way, leading by as much as 29 with 4:55 to go in the contest.

The Tigers was unable to get the offense going in the first half of play as the Demons threw both zone and man-to-man at LSU, and the Tigers on several possessions ran the shot clock down to near the end. The Demons (2-5) led by as much as six, 19-13, with 7:29 to go in the first half. LSU tied the game at 19-19 and 22-22 but could never get the lead going into the half, trialing 26-25.

Jordan Sears for the second straight game hit six three-pointers in scoring 18 points, while Cam Carter posted 15, and Jalen Reed and Vyctorius Miller had 11 points each. Corey Chest just missed a double double with 10 rebounds and nine rebounds.

After shooting just 34 percent in the first half and 3-of-13 from distance, the Tigers again exploded in the second half, shooting 17-of-32 (53.1%), hit 7-of-14 three-pointers and 11-of-12 at the free throw line. LSU scored 52 second half points.

For the game, LSU finished 26-of-58 (44.8%) with 10-of-27 from distance (37.0%). LSU was a very good 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the line.

The Demons shot 31.3 percent for the game (21-of-67) and 8-of-26 (30.8%) from distance. NSU made just 3-of-10 at the free throw line.

Northwestern State, which had a 22-15 advantage in the first half, finished the game with a 40-39 advantage overall.

LSU forced 19 turnovers and had 14 points off NSU turnovers and a 32-20 advantage in points in the paint.

The Demons were led by Jon Sanders with four three-pointers and 14 points.

The Tigers are back in action Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at the Maravich Center against Florida State in the SEC/ACC Challenge game. Tickets are on sale at LSUTix.net. Also, the special for Black Friday weekend continues as fans can purchase a ticket for either the Florida State, Stetson (Dec. 17) or UNO (Dec. 22) game and receive a free ticket for the Jan. 4 SEC opener against Vanderbilt.

NATIONAL MOUSSE DAY

On November 30th, National Mousse Day serves up a delicious treat that can be savory or sweet.

What can we say about mousse? The word "mousse" in French means "foam." Typically, we whip egg whites or cream to make a mousse. Depending on the type of mousse, its consistency can vary from light and airy to thick and creamy.

This versatile dish lends itself well to both desserts and savory recipes. In fact, several types of mousse can be served at the same meal. From a smokey salmon mousse as the first course to a tart lemon or creamy chocolate mousse for dessert, there is virtually no limit to the flavors we can incorporate into a mousse.

Mousse can also be used as a filling for other dishes such as pastries and parfaits. A savory mousse pairs well with fruit and cheese plates making beautiful appetizers, too.

Norco Noel! The Home of the Norco (LA) Christmas Parade

Welcome to the home of the Norco Civic Association Christmas Parade -- the Greatest Show on Asphalt! (There is also a very nice Christmas parade in Norco, California. This is not it!)

The Norco Christmas Parade rolls the first Sunday of every December to usher in the holiday season to the River Parishes.  The theme of this year's parade is "Norco Noel: Santa Goes to the Olympics!"

The original parade ran from the 1950s through the 1980s before it was discontinued. In 2001, a group of residents, including Norco native Stephen Weber, revived the parade. It has rolled almost every year since with a variety of themes. We had to cancel twice for inclement weather, once because of the Covid-19 pandemic and, in 2021, because of damage to our town from Hurricane Ida.

Our parade has grown to nearly 70 entries, including floats, trucks, cars, pageant queens, civic groups, schools, dancing groups and marching bands. We have welcomed the 610 Stompers, the St. Augustine Marching 100, Boudreaux and Clothilde, and the U.S. Navy band as we have celebrated music and movies, River Parishes traditions, Veterans, the Super Bowl, elections and first responders.

The old Norco Christmas parade rolls on River Road.

The parade begins at 1 p.m. at River Road and Apple Street, travels east to Good Hope Street, turns north on Sixth Street, then travels south on Apple Street and disbands at River Road. After the parade, Santa will be available to take FREE photos at the Community Christmas tree, located at the Veterans Memorial on Apple Street.

Parade participants are strongly encouraged to incorporate the overall theme of the parade in floats, costumes, and decorations. Each participant must submit an entry form and an entry fee of $50. Vehicles must provide proof of insurance.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,December 2

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

The Bluegrass Pickin' Party is an open acoustic bluegrass jam. Bring your guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bass, dobro, harmonica, or singing voice to join the jam circle. Beginners welcome to come and learn traditional bluegrass music. Intermediate and advanced players welcome as well. This weekly jam is also open to anyone and everyone who'd like to come listen and enjoy the music.

COUTNDOWN TO NEW ORLEANS TALENT SHOWCASE

Annual Improv Gala Highlights Best of New Orleans Culture, Food & Music

The 7th Annual Improvisations Gala, presented by The Herb Alpert Foundation, will take place from 7-11 pm, Saturday, December 7, encompassing the entire 400 block of Esplanade where the New Orleans Jazz Museum is located.

Heralded as “the best party of the year”, the spectacular evening will feature an incredible array of performers, exquisite local cuisine, craft cocktails, immersive exhibits, and light installations that will bring the 2024 theme, Aquatic Gardens, to life. Grammy-nominated Afro-Cuban funk artist, Cimafunk, sponsored by James Douglas Hislop, will headline the magical musical affair.

Performances throughout the historic complex will include New Orleans icons Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Little Freddie King, Wanda Rouzan & A Taste of New Orleans, Detroit Brooks & the NOLA Jazz Museum Band. Musical luminaries Erica Falls, the Amina Scott Quintet, Vincent Hsu & Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band from Taiwan, New Breed Brass Band, the Kristin Diable Band, The Treme Lafitte Brass Band, the Britney Chauntae Band and others. Attendees will also be treated to the sights and sounds of Kit Harris & the N’Awlins D’Awlins Baby Dolls, Big Queen Mary K. Stevenson & the Original Wild Tchoupitoulas, NOLA Chorus Girls, Hibriduz Jazz Band from Honduras, and the NOCCA Jazz Ensemble.

Jazz Museum Executive Director Greg Lambousy is excited about this year’s fundraiser. “The Lt. Governor has proclaimed 2024 as the ‘year of music’. What better way to end the year than an extraordinary celebration of our music and culture here at the New Orleans Jazz Museum!”

Tickets to the Improvisations Gala are priced at $150 for access to all performances, exhibits, food and beverage.  Patron tickets are available for $300 and include an exclusive Backstage Experience with a private Main Stage viewing area, elevated food and drink, lounge seating and additional perks. By popular demand, Treasure Chest Key sales for a coveted piece of jewelry from Adler’s will again be featured, and the Improv On-Line Auction will be launched in early October. To purchase tickets, become a sponsor, and/or learn more as plans develop, visit https://nolajazzmuseum.org/gala.

All funds raised by the Improvisations Gala directly support the Jazz Museum’s educational programs and initiatives.  Ticket sales and sponsorship ensures the continuation of valuable programs that bring the magic of jazz to life for the community and beyond.

The 2024 New Orleans Jazz Museum Improvisations Gala Committee is chaired by Edgar “Dino” Gankendorff, Valerie Landry and James Moore.  Honorary co- chairs include Herb Alpert, Jon Batiste, Bryan Batt, Randy Fertel, John Goodman, Wynton Marsalis, Arthel Neville, Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, and Dan Pritzker.

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.

Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.

No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.

This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.

The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.

Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.

Rolling fundraiser

Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.

With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.

Grinchy power lines and rain

The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.

Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.

The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
