NATIONAL LOUISIANA DAY
On November 9, National Louisiana Day recognizes the state that brought us such treasures as Jazz, Creole and American Mardi Gras.
Throughout the history of the state, the blending of race and culture have resulted in the Delta's own unique flair that brings visitors from around the world seeking to taste their food, hear their music and see their style.
When French explorers first arrived, several diverse tribes populated the area. Many of their population were decimated by disease and war. Natchez, Choctaw or Chitimacha descendants still survive today.
In 1803, Louisiana became territory when the United States completed negotiations with France for the 828,000 mile Louisiana Purchase. The first of 15 states to be carved out of the region, Louisianna entered the United States in 1812.
Within its mysterious gulf, Louisiana holds the secrets of pirates, conflicts of slavery and the paths of progress. The bayou teems with life and stories untold.
Louisiana epitomizes the phrase "melting pot" probably more than any other state. Throughout the history of the state, Native American, French, Spanish, German, African, Irish and Caribean cultures have blended in a variety of ways creating a diverse and distinct culture in the bayou. From the food to the language, the music and history, Cajun (French Canadian or Acadian), Creole (European, African, Caribbean or Spanish mixed ancestry) and even the landscape impact the enchantment that is Louisiana

Rafael weakens into tropical storm; swells expected to cause Gulf Coast rip currents
By GABRIELLA KILLETT
Hurricane Rafael has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is expected to weaken further in the Gulf of Mexico over the next couple of days, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Rafael had already weakened from a Category 3 to a Category 2 hurricane Friday morning by 9 a.m., and it is expected to become a remnant of a storm over the next two days, forecasters say.
The eye of the storm was over central Gulf of Mexico Saturday, and its strongest winds were on its northeast side, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters issued a coastal flood advisory for parts of southeastern Louisiana as the storm moves through the Gulf. Eastern Orleans, lower Plaquemines, lower St. Bernard and southeast St. Tammany parishes are under the advisory from 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.
While the storm poses "no direct threat to land," its swells are creating a rip current risk along the Gulf Coast, according to forecasters. The swells are "likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the Gulf Coast through the weekend," forecasters say.
As it weakens, the storm will likely turn southwest through the middle of next week, according to forecasters.

The New Orleans restaurant scene may be world famous, but to locals, it’s deeply personal. We keep maître d’s on speed dial, our favorite servers know our birthdays, and the corner market leaves the pickles off our po’boys. Join culinary historian Jessica B. Harris to learn about the history of New Orleans restaurants at the HNOC’s 2024 Food Forum: New Orleans Restaurants through History, presented by Chef Paul Prudhomme's Magic Seasoning Blends in partnership with the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund, Oceana Grill, and Big Easy Whiskey.
Food historians, restaurateurs, chefs, and culture bearers will explore the rich history of our restaurants and how they influence today’s emerging food scene. Beloved chefs from local featured restaurants will serve up a tasting menu with cocktail pairings at a Food Fête immediately following the forum.
Following the day’s sessions, the Food Fête will offer guests signature tastes from local historic neighborhood restaurants curated by local food writer Megan Braden-Perry and an open bar including wine, champagne, and signature cocktails created by Eve Marie Haydel, Dooky Chase’s mixologist. The Food Fête is included in the ticket price for session attendees. Food Fête tickets may be purchased separately for $20.
Taste history at a private lunch at Antoine’s Restaurant. Antoine’s is the oldest restaurant in the United States that has been continuously run by the same family. Rick Blount, great-great grandson of Antoine Alciatore, will oversee the creation of a historic menu while marketing director Lisa Blount will share family stories and discuss the recent donation of the restaurant’s papers to the HNOC. This optional activity has an additional charge of $75 and seats are limited.

zoetrope
/ˈzoʊ.əˌtroʊp/
Definition: A zoetrope is a pre-film animation device that creates the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion.
Origin: The word "zoetrope" comes from the Greek words "zoon," meaning "animal," and "tropos," meaning "turn." It was invented in the 19th century, with the first patent granted in 1833.
Example: The children were fascinated by the old zoetrope, which brought their drawings to life as it spun.
The term "zoetrope" refers to an early animation device that revolutionized how motion was perceived before the advent of film. Invented in the 19th century, the zoetrope consists of a cylindrical drum with slits along its sides and a series of images inside that depict the stages of motion. When the drum spins, viewers looking through the slits see a rapid succession of images, creating the illusion of continuous movement. This device played a pivotal role in the development of animated storytelling, laying the groundwork for modern animation techniques and cinema.

Brass band Masterclasses in New Orleans (United States) organized by TREMPO (France)
In the heart of New Orleans, cradle of brass bands and jazz marching bands, this training aims to develop instrumental technique as well as knowledge of traditional repertoires and oral tradition.
We want to allow musicians who play in brass bands, and brass bands at a professional level, to deepen their knowledge of instruments, their techniques, and to work on repertoires of tradition and oral transmission. The discovery of this music in their social and cultural environment will promote understanding and integration of modes of composition and arrangement. This training takes place in the heart of the historic district at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, which allows them to meet many of its musicians.
Professional musicians practicing the music of brass bands and jazz marching bands in New Orleans styles and having an advanced level. Knowledge of repertoires and regular group practice (walks or concerts) are required.

The long-standing tradition of a live tiger at Death Valley is a memory that families all across Louisiana cherish.
For decades, Mike the Tiger safely paraded around the field. It can be done responsibly and safely this weekend–and in the future.
Mike VII is a beloved member of the Purple & Gold community. We honor him with the return of a live tiger at Saturday’s game, a welcomed homage to the energy and passion found only inside Death Valley.

Brad Williams
Get ready to laugh till your sides ache
WIlliams’ show offers a fresh perspective on life's quirks, cleverly navigating through his experiences as a little person, relationships, and everyday situations. His humorous and inspiring observations on disability, relationships, sex, and race consistently win over audiences; proving anyone can overcome their shortcomings. His high energy live performances frequently produce standing ovations from audience members which prompted the late Robin Williams to call him “Prozac with a head.”
Williams has parlayed his live performances into a multitude of stand-up television appearances, including The Tonight Show, Dave Attell’s Comedy Underground, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. His first one-hour special, Fun Size, was the highest rated special on Showtime, and a year later, he followed that up with his second one, Daddy Issues, which was even more successful than the first. His third special in three years was an uproarious one, hosting some of the edgiest comedians in the country from the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. His last groundbreaking special on Netflix, The Degenerates, garnered more huge ratings and rave reviews. Also an accomplished actor, Williams has appeared on numerous TV shows and feature films, including FX’s Legit, Sam and Cat, Mind of Mencia, Pitboss, a recurring role on the Hulu original show Deadbeat, and memorable roles in a plethora of movies, including Little Evil, produced by Scott Stuber (Ted), as well as the Netflix original Christopher Guest film, Mascots, and most recently Reno 911: It’s A Wonderful Heist.

New Orleans restaurant from acclaimed Charleston team is opening. Here's what to know
The Bell has British pub vibes, a big patio on Esplanade Avenue
BY IAN MCNULTY
-
The Bell is a restaurant with British pub inspirations and a large patio in New Orleans. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)
Back in his home base of Charleston, South Carolina, it’s a big deal when Brooks Reitz opens a new restaurant. The three operates there are well regarded and have drawn national attention. Now he’s about to open his first restaurant in New Orleans, and anticipation is high.
Last spring, Reitz and his business partners took over the colorful old cottage at 3125 Esplanade Ave., near the Fair Grounds and City Park. It’s been home to different restaurants through the years, most recently the Post and earlier Nonna Mia.
Now it’s opening as the Bell with a much different identity and style, merging modern tavern with British pub.
The Bell is slated to open by Friday after the customary trial run this week (check for schedule updates here).
The stylings of a British pub are emblazoned all over the new restaurant, from the short-legged stools in the bar room to Union Jack flags strung from the ceiling and contemporary British themed art on the walls.
While the design is unmistakably British, the feel is more cheeky than prim and proper. It’s more Sgt. Pepper than Downton Abbey.
“The whole idea is just to have this be a fun place where you can go crush some Guinness, have a sandwich, have a good time,” Reitz said.
On the menu
The bar is indeed pouring Guinness on tap and frozen gin and tonics among its specialties.
On the menu, there’s a crispy fish sandwich and a steak sandwich, a fishmonger’s pie, and a pork chop. Fried mussels on the half shell, broiled oysters, onion and carrot fritters and crudités kick things off.
The old house still has the contours of a home between its small chambers and many architectural details.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
The doors, embedded with stained glass, open to a casual bar area with a small dining room attached for conventional restaurant service.
Patio plans
A big part of the Bell, though, is outside. A large patio has long part of this property, though rarely has its potential felt fully realized. That seems primed to change with the Bell.
With fresh landscaping and string lights overhead, it has all the makings for a good spot to knock back drinks and snacks al fresco in a neighborhood that
Reitz says there’s a “phase 2” in the works for the patio as well. The plan calls for a horseshoe-shaped oyster bar in the back of the patio, with beer on tap and a canopy above. This piece of the puzzle could materialize in the next few months.
Charleston track record
Rietz operates three restaurants in close proximity to each other in Charleston – Leon’s Oyster Shop, Little Jack’s Tavern and Melfi’s – as well as the event space the Oyster Shed.
Little Jack’s Tavern, home of a much-loved burger, was on the lists of best new restaurants from Southern Living and Bon Appetit after its debut in 2016.
Leon’s, which has a specialty in fried chicken, oysters and Champagne, was a nominee for the James Beard award for outstanding hospitality in 2020. Melfi’s, the newest of the bunch, is an Italian restaurant for fresh pasta and wood-fired pizza.
Bringing a British-inflected concept to New Orleans comes in part through Rietz’s business partners, Tim Mink and Andrew Bell, who each have close family ties to England and who each now live in New Orleans. The Esplanade Avenue property itself and its neighborhood setting sealed the deal, Reitz said.

NATIONAL SCRAPPLE DAY
National Scrapple Day on November 9th recognizes the first pork food invented in America. For those not familiar with scrapple, it is traditionally a mush of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal, wheat flour, and spices, such as sage, thyme, savory and black pepper. The mush is then formed into a semi-solid loaf, sliced and pan-fried.
Scrapple is also known by the Pennsylvania Dutch name pon haus, and the immediate ancestor of scrapple was the Low German dish called panhas. Local settlers adapted the dish to make use of locally available ingredients.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, German colonists who settled near Philadelphia and Chester County, Pennsylvania, developed the first recipes for scrapple. With such a rich heritage, many strongly associate scrapple with rural areas surrounding Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, eastern Virginia, and the Delmarva Peninsula.
- Supermarkets offer scrapple throughout the regions in both refrigerated and frozen cases.
- Did you know some recipes for scrapple include beef, chicken, or turkey?
- Instead of pan-frying scrapple, try deep-frying or broiling it for a different texture.
- Scrapple makes an excellent breakfast sidedish.
- Try your scrapple with a side of apple butter, ketchup, jelly, maple syrup, honey, horseradish, or mustard.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 11
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Kerin Auth Bembry and John House, La Luz Wine Importers
swirl news
FNWS
This week, we have a special tasting combining a Trust Your Importer and a Meet & Greet event in one! Importers, La Luz Selections, carefully curates wine from producers emphasizing authenticity, sustainability, and a strong sense of terroir. Their portfolio highlights winemakers who practice organic, biodynamic, or natural farming and winemaking methods, ensuring minimal intervention both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Their diverse portfolio tends to feature small-scale, artisanal European producers with an emphasis on Spain & Portugal.
Kerin Auth Bembry, founder of La Luz, has built a strong reputation as an expert in Spanish wines after spending extensive time in Spain and developing close relationships with winemakers across the country. Her deep knowledge of the regions and indigenous grape varieties has made her a champion of small, family-owned wineries that produce wines with a focus on terroir, sustainability, and tradition. Through her import business, she has helped bring a wide array of natural and organic Spanish and Portuguese wines to the American market that showcase the diverse styles of the regions.
We are excited to have Kerin join us for Friday Night Wine School, focusing on her imports from Spain and Portugal. We'll be tasting 5 unique and approachable wines, authentic representations of indigenous varieties and local traditions. We hope you'll join us! 4 spots remaining, go here for tickets: - La Luz Selections - Importer/Winemaker Tasting, Spain & Portugal with Kerin Auth Bembry

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
