NATIONAL NO BRA DAY
National No Bra Day on October 13 encourages wearers to leave that bra at home to promote cancer awareness.
#NoBraDay
No Bra Day promotes breast cancer awareness to help raise money for research. Many women who have survived breast cancer are unable to go without a bra as they need it to hold their prosthesis after surgery. Additionally, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and No Bra Day should serve as a reminder for all women to be screened for breast cancer. Most types of breast cancer can be treated if caught early.
Screenings and breast exams are a part of the early detection process. The first line of defense is a monthly self-breast exam. The best time to do a breast exam is about ten days after the onset of your menstrual cycle. However, fickle as breasts can be, we do become familiar with them even if they are lumpy. We learn what's healthy or not. For example, they change texture over the month. Sticking to the same time each month will provide a more accurate exam. For those who don't menstruate, choose a day of the month always to perform the exam.
As you become more familiar with the shape and texture of your breast, take note of any changes. Use the mirror to help you, too. Dimpling, swelling, and redness will be signs to look for.
When you schedule an annual appointment with your physician, make sure a breast exam is completed, too. Tell your doctor about any changes. If you or your doctor notices any signs, the doctor can order tests, including a sonogram or mammogram.
Finally, a preventative mammogram is the last line of defense. Today's mammograms offer more vivid detail of the breast tissue. Baseline mammograms are provided around the age of 35 unless family history indicates sooner. The baseline mammogram provides a comparison view for your physician should something develop later down the line. Women age 40 and over are recommended to receive yearly preventative mammograms.

NAVY BIRTHDAY | OCTOBER 13
On October 13th, the United States Navy observes its birthday every year.
The United States Navy (USN) is the United States Armed Forces' naval warfare service branch and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is currently the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service has over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve.
With only two ships and a crew of eighty men, the Continental Navy was born on October 13, 1775. The decision of the Continental Congress set the Continental Navy on course to carry arms to the British army, not to defend against it. However, these two ships and crew represent the birth of the United States Navy.
Throughout the Revolutionary War, their importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world's largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not become a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed.
With the advent of the airplane, the Naval ships became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provide the country with sea and air defense fleets.

8 am - 12 pm
New Orleans City Park
Tad Gormley Stadium
Marconi Drive @ Navarre Ave.
Directions and Parking
The Sunday Market is located in the parking lot of Tad Gormley Stadium at the corner of Marconi and Navarre. While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!
RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.
No Cash? No Problem!
All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.

Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.

flabbergasted pronunciation: fluh-bur-gas-tid
Definition: to be extremely surprised or shocked
Origin: The origin of flabbergasted is uncertain, but it is believed to be a combination of the words "flabby" and "aghast," both of which mean limp or weak and terrified or horrified, respectively.
Example: When I found out that I had won the lottery, I was completely flabbergasted.
Astonished is a synonym for flabbergasted, which means to be extremely surprised or shocked. When someone is astonished, they are amazed or astounded by something unexpected. The difference between the two is that "astonished" is a milder form of surprise, while "flabbergasted" implies a more intense and overwhelming feeling of shock or amazement. Astonished can be used to describe a variety of situations, from discovering a hidden talent to seeing an incredible sight for the first time. Overall, both words convey a sense of awe and wonder, but flabbergasted is reserved for those moments that truly leave us speechless.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.

NATIONAL YORKSHIRE PUDDING DAY
National Yorkshire Pudding Day is celebrated on October 13 in the United States and honors a traditional English dish brought over by immigrants.
Not to be confused with a dessert, Yorkshire Pudding is a traditional English dish similar to a popover. The dish is made from a batter and usually served with roast meat and gravy. Cooks in the north of England devised a means of using the fat that dropped into the dripping pans. They created a batter pudding while the meat roasted in the oven. In 1737, one such cook published a recipe for "A Dripping Pudding" in The Whole Duty of a Woman.
Make a good batter as for pancakes: put in a hot toss-pan over the fire with a bit of butter to fry the bottom a little then put the pan and butter under a shoulder of mutton, instead of a dripping-pan, keeping frequently shaking it by the handle and it will be light and savoury, and fit to take up when your mutton is enough; then turn it in a dish and serve it hot. ~ From The Whole Duty of a Woman.
In 1747, Hannah Glasse published similar instructions in The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy. She named the recipe 'Yorkshire Pudding.' Glasse received credit for re-inventing and renaming the original version of 'A Dripping Pudding."
These savory popovers open up a world of possibilities when it comes to fillings. While the gravy is traditional, don't hesitate to add cheese, eggs, your favorite protein, or an herby filling. If you have more of a sweet tooth, straying from the traditional by adding chocolate, caramel, or a cream cheese filling sounds perfect!

What does “gaslighting” mean these days? 10 words born out of the screen
Published on October 12, 2024
Credit: Ron Lach
Ever caught yourself rolling your eyes at "spam" or a "Debbie Downer"? Guess what —those aren't just words; they're pop culture legends that were screen-born. These 10 everyday terms started as TV or movie dialogue jewels and leaped into our conversations, becoming universal labels for both old and new ideas. Let’s see how many of these words started as plot-critical concepts —and stuck!
1Spam
Credit: Hannes Johnson
Spam existed decades before the internet was even invented. Although back then it only referred to the pork-and-ham processed meat sold in cans (an abbreviation of "spiced ham"). The product had been circulating and consumed since 1937, when, in the 70s, the British group Monty Python made history with a sketch from their show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. It was about a bar catering to Vikings, where every dish included the canned meat, prompting the servers and customers to chant "spam" repeatedly and annoyingly.
The sketch became so popular that the cultural reference stuck in people’s minds. By the time electronic mail was born —and with it, tons of unsolicited, junky, repetitive messages — people already knew what to use the word for.
2Paparazzi
Credit: Brett Sayles
Even though intrusive journalists have been around for centuries, meddlesome photographers didn’t have a label until the 1960s. In Federico Fellini’s famous movie La Dolce Vita, there was an iconic character named Paparazzo. He was a freelance photographer who relentlessly followed celebrities to capture sensational images. His actions represented a new type of aggressive journalism that was emerging at the time, focused on capturing the private lives of public figures.
Over the years, Fellini revealed that he chose the name Paparazzo for the character because it sounded like a "buzzing insect, hovering, darting, stinging." The word is universally used today and even has the derivation "papped", for subjects that have been caught on camera by such photographers.
3To google
Credit: Firmbee.com
By now, we are very used to new technologies swiftly becoming verbs. Even the Merriam-Webster dictionary accepts "DM" as a verb and a noun. There was a time, though, when the verbification of tech wasn’t so obvious. One of Google’s co-founders, Larry Page, first used the search engine’s name as a gerund in a 1998 mailing list, where he signed off: "Have fun and keep googling!"
However, the verb gained widespread popularity thanks to a 2002 episode of the famous show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In it, a character asked Buffy if she had "googled" someone: the new term confused the others in the room. While the verb was likely emerging in many people’s vocabulary simultaneously, that scene helped solidify it for the masses. The American Dialect Society proceeded to choose the verb "google" as the "most useful word of 2002."
4Debbie Downer
Credit: Keenan Constance
It was the show Saturday Night Live that conceived this character who would get along with "Negative Nancy" and "Bob Bummer." In an episode that aired in 2004, comedian Rachel Dratch portrayed Debbie Downer, a woman who went to Disney World with her friends but was incapable of feeling joy and instead kept bringing up depressing topics.
The character was introduced along with a mocking jingle explaining her influence on her social group. The sketch was so celebrated that it became a recurring series in SNL, and the expression caught on. "Downer" had been in the English lexicon since the 19th century, but the idea of attaching it to a name to trademark the pessimistic attitude happened entirely in the scriptwriters’ room.
5Bucket List
Credit: J V
"Bucket list" has existed for decades to refer to unfinished business, or pending issues in ongoing projects. But it wasn’t until the 21st century that the term was given a new meaning for its association with the expression "kicking the bucket". A "bucket list" then came to signify a series of experiences a person wants to have within their lifetime.
The concept was popularized for the masses thanks to the success of the movie The Bucket List (2007). In it, the terminally-ill characters played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman teach the audience the value of fulfilling life’s wishes and whims. The touching concept then entered the vocabulary of millions around the world.
6Core Memory
Credit: Raj Rana
Although previously used to refer to computers, the term "core memories" only began to apply to humans thanks to an animated movie. In Pixar’s Inside Out (2015), the memories inside a girl’s mind are illustrated as a colorful system of orbs. The most treasured of those are called "core memories" and are created whenever the girl lives a deeply moving experience that helps solidify her identity.
Since the movie’s release, "core memories" has become a popular phrase on the internet, where people share real or imagined experiences to refer to events that left lasting impressions on their psyche and personality.
7Catfishing
Credit: Anil Sharma
We now use "catfishing" as the name for a type of online fraud: cases of financial or romantic deceit, where a fake online persona is created to lure victims. But, have you ever wondered how catfish —the fish— became tangled with these affairs?
In 2010, a producer called Nev Schulman released a documentary showing how he had been tricked in this way. One of the men interviewed about the case compared the event with a fabled deception from the fishing industry: placing an "impostor" catfish in a tank full of cod during shipping. The idea gave the documentary its title, and eventually led to a reality TV show of the same name, further cementing the concept's fame.
8My bad
Credit: Sarah Kilian
This is another expression that was once used informally in some social groups as slang. An early instance of its use was recorded in a 1956 interview with Louis Armstrong. However, it was in the ‘90s that the apologetic motto caught on massively. It’s believed that it became internationally widespread because of its casual inclusion in a scene from the 1995 movie Clueless. In it, the protagonist swerves in one of her first driving lessons, and softly apologizes with a quick "Oops! My bad!".
Although it has sparked debates over its grammatical correctness, "my bad" is now used in informal conversations as a synonym for "sorry" or "my fault."
9Friend-zone
Credit: Helena Lopes
Funnily enough, it was the show Friends that popularized the concept of "the friend zone." In the middle of the first season, which aired in 1994 to an audience of roughly 24 million viewers, Joey explains to Ross that romantic relationships hardly ever evolve from long-standing friendships. He introduces the expression with: "You are in the friend zone. You are major of the zone."
The term was quickly adopted and later used in other popular media, such as books and movies. Eventually, the words were verbified and also transformed to refer to both parts of the equation: the "friendzoner" and the "friendzonee."
10Gaslighting
Credit: Melody Zimmerman
This term, broadly used in psychology nowadays, originated in honor of Gas Light, a British play by Patrick Hamilton. In the play, a man attempts to manipulate his wife by slowly deceiving her and making her doubt her own mental sanity. One of his strategies is to dim the gas lights in their house little by little, but insisting that he hasn’t touched them when she accuses him.
This tactic, the most symbolic of the character’s actions, gave its name to the play and the subsequent 1994 film adaptation. The story became a classic example to illustrate this particular form of manipulation, which is now universally referred to as "gaslighting."

About the Film:
Four years in the making, "Wasted" shines a light on New Orleans' fragile balance between residents and
visitors in a post-COVID world. Through intimate interviews with French Quarter residents, business owners,
and culture bearers, the documentary explores the benefits and harms imposed by unbridled visitor numbers on
the 300-year-old neighborhood.
"Overtourism isn't just a buzzword," says Cayouette, best known for her role as Lara Lee Candie-Fitzwilly in the
locally filmed Django Unchained. "It's a reality that communities across the world are grappling with, and
nowhere is this more evident than in the French Quarter. We need to find a way forward that doesn't sacrifice
our culture for short-term gain."
Featuring interviews with Derrick Tabb, Harry Shearer, Dianne Honoré, and other local historians and
culture bearers, the film aims to spark conversation around the growing global discourse on Sustainable
Tourism and the urgent need for action. This sneak peek is in advance of the film’s premiere at 6:30 p.m.

Aah, October, when New Orleans wakes up again for the Long Party. We have two seasons here; the second one starts October 1 and ends sometime in June. The weather is cooler now, everybody’s settling into their fall schedule, and now it’s time to get out and do stuff.
This month for me is mostly events with The New Orleans Guitar Masters as part of the 2024 Across The Pond Guitar Festival. Jimmy Robinson puts it together and it’s a really interesting show.

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet
The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.
A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.
Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.
Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.
She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!
Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.
Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.
The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!
The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.
Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.
The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

The Project
This collaboration is aligned with our city’s efforts to uplift community voices and utilize our city’s culture to bring positive change to the community. We can bring opportunities for small businesses, local artists, and culture bearers. Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.
The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
