NATIONAL BEER LOVER'S DAY | SEPTEMBER 7

On September 7th, National Beer Lover's Day celebrates the grains, hops and brewing methods across many eras.

Beer and the process of brewing beer may predate known history. As varied as the methods, grains, and flavors, beer continues to change and evolve.

Virginia colonists brewed beer. William Penn included a place for brewing beer within the Pennsylvania colony. It can still be visited at Pennsbury Manor today. The first President of the United States recorded a recipe for brewing beer in his notes. Samuel Adams holds a place in both beer and tea history in this country. There were a few beer lovers and patriots among the nation’s founders.

The United States also derives its rich brewing history from beer-loving German immigrants during the mid-1800s. Some of those family names are as familiar today as they were a hundred years ago.

While some names have faded into the past, smaller batch brewers continue to experiment with old and new recipes. The crafting of beer carries deep traditions, often requiring years of training and experience in the trade. Depending on the brewery, the path to brewmaster may take years to develop the skill and expertise. Eventually, a brewmaster gains the knowledge necessary to produce a quality beer every time. One particular requirement is a passion for the craft.

The brewer will master lagers, ales, malts, and stouts. They may even specialize. However, their ability to ferment the perfect beer under each condition and bring out the flavor of the grain and yeast will be key. Managing temperature and timing for an IPA or studying grains all go into their education. Each process varies, and a brewmaster knows this.

National Hummingbird Day happens during the first Saturday in September on the National Day Calendar. We are sharing our curiosity about the beautiful and tiny little bird known as the hummingbird. We want everyone to spread their wings today and learn facts, history, and folklore on National Hummingbird Day.

Hummingbirds are remarkable birds with unique characteristics that fascinate bird watchers and nature lovers, alike. There are over 300 species of hummingbirds throughout the world that belong to the Trochilidae family. The Trochilidae family is known for their small size, beautiful plumage, and amazing flying abilities. This family of birds comes in different sizes, colors, and behaviors that are specific to the location where hummingbirds live.

The average hummingbird is between 2 to 5 inches in length, making it the smallest bird in the world. Known for their beautiful colors, hummingbird feathers are an iridescent mix of greens, blues, reds, and purples. Interestingly, the iridescent color of hummingbird feathers gives the appearance of the feathers changing colors in light.

A hummingbird flaps its wings up to 50 times per second and has amazing flying capabilities. For example, hummingbirds move their wings in a figure-eight pattern, allowing them to "hover" in midair. In addition, these unique flying characteristics allow a hummingbird to feed on a flower while in flight. Unsurprisingly, because hummingbirds move so quickly, they feed frequently on nectar from flowers and insects.

Did You Know?
Hummingbirds are a migratory species that travel long distances. For example, the Rufous Hummingbird migrates about 4,000 miles each winter from North America to central Mexico.

Cultural Significance of Hummingbirds

Throughout the world, hummingbirds hold special meaning to different cultures. Their unique characteristics represent the beauty and transformation of spirituality for people and their beliefs. For example, Native Americans believe hummingbirds symbolize love, joy, and beauty. In fact, hummingbirds are messengers between the spirit world and the human world that bring good luck, happiness, and renewal of life. Similarly, Japanese culture considers the hummingbird a symbol of dreams and aspirations. They believe because a hummingbird can hover in midair, anyone can achieve the impossible.

On the Caribbean Island of Trinidad, the hummingbird is a symbol of spirituality and transformation. In fact, the hummingbird is on their coat of arms to represent the blending of all people and the cultures found on the island. Central and South American cultures believe hummingbirds are a sign of reincarnation. Interestingly, the ancient Aztec culture viewed the hummingbird as a part of the sun and the movement of time.

Hummingbird Conservation

Some hummingbird species are becoming threatened at an alarming pace. The concern about the loss of hummingbirds in some regions has prompted conservation efforts across the globe. These efforts are important for the protection of hummingbirds and their habitats to ensure these beautiful birds remain around for a long time.

Agriculture, mining, and the growth of populations are just a few things impacting the habitats of hummingbirds. Forests where hummingbirds migrate are being destroyed for farming and residential development. The human need for timber and fuelwood is causing forests to disappear, especially the oak, fir, and pine trees hummingbirds live in. Furthermore, the destruction of land is also destroying flowers and plants hummingbirds eat to survive.

Illegal trade and smuggling of hummingbirds is an appalling business on the Internet. This illegal trade and smuggling always involves killing hummingbirds for profit. Oddly, reports indicate sellers entice people to use hummingbirds to make a love potion to attract a spouse or prevent their spouse from straying. Whether or not these "Love Charms" work, they pose a significant outcry for the protection of hummingbirds.

Description

This striking cross pendant was once owned and worn by the iconic Elizabeth Taylor. Embodying her irresistible Hollywood glamour, the blue enamel and diamond pendant designed by British bespoke jeweler Theo Fennell is almost as stunning as Taylor herself.

Known for his eye-catching designs and one-of-a-kind commissions, Fennell crafted this cross pendant with brilliant blue enamel and 18K yellow gold embellished with delicate floral motifs. Accented with five white diamonds of F-G color and VS clarity and accompanied by its 14K yellow gold chain, this cross pendant still makes as bold a statement today as it did when Elizabeth Taylor wore it.

Renowned not only for her unforgettable roles in films like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Taylor was also celebrated for her extraordinary jewelry collection. Her assemblage, among the most significant in the world, featured iconic masterpieces from Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, JAR, Bulgari and other distinguished design houses. This necklace is further elevated by its provenance as a part of Kathy Ireland's collection. Ireland, a prominent figure who seamlessly transitioned from supermodel to dynamic businesswoman, has leveraged her brand's influence to become a major force in fashion and home furnishings. Alongside Taylor, the two have redefined the concept of "Hollywood Icon."

What iconic toy was first intended to keep fragile ship equipment steady?

Legos

Hula Hoop

Slinky

Silly Putty

Mechanical engineer Richard James invented the Slinky by accident. In 1943, he was working to devise springs that could keep sensitive ship equipment steady at sea. After accidentally knocking some samples off a shelf, he watched in amazement as they gracefully “walked” down instead of falling. Along with his wife Betty, James developed a plan to turn his invention into the next big novelty toy. Betty combed the dictionary for an appropriate name and came up with “Slinky.” James designed a machine to coil 80-feet of wire into a two-inch spiral. The couple borrowed $500 to manufacture the first Slinkys. Initial sales proved sluggish but soared after Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia allowed demonstrations for Christmas 1945. The first 400 Slinkys sold within minutes. An advertisement with a memorable jingle familiarized a national customer base. “What walks down stairs alone or in pairs and makes a slinkety sound? A spring a spring, a marvelous thing. Everyone knows it’s Slinky!” Slinkys glided effortlessly down stairs on television, but alas most household steps proved too tall and wide for long descents. Still, at the end of the 20th century and 250 million Slinkys later, people continued to buy them.

Tigers will celebrate the start of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium on Sept. 7 when Nicholls visits Baton Rouge. Kickoff is at 6:32 p.m. CT on ESPN+/SEC Network+.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

NATIONAL SALAMI DAY

National Salami Day on September 7th recognizes a cured meat many people enjoy every day. Salami are cured, fermented, and air-dried sausages that find their way to our delis and butcher shops in delicious variety.

Most commonly made with pork, makers use other meats and blends when preparing salami. For example, delis may offer a lamb, duck, or a beef and pork blend. The ground sausage is blended with seasonings and salt air-cured in either a pork or beef casing. Methods and recipes vary by region and country. Even aging time varies. However, makers typically age salami between 30 to 90 days or longer.

While salami's beginnings are uncertain, the Romans may have introduced methods used today. In days before refrigeration, Salamis were historically popular among Southern European peasants. The sausage keeps well once cut when stored at room temperatures for up to 30 to 40 days.

Two salamis that might be familiar to you are Genoa and Hard Salami. Genoa salami ages with red wine, peppercorns, and garlic. This softer salami offers a fermented flavor. In contrast, Hard Salami not only falls into the cured category but makers also dry and smoke the meat. The resulting salami slices easily.

NATIONAL ACORN SQUASH DAY | SEPTEMBER 7

On September 7th, National Acorn Squash Day celebrates the autumn flavors found in what is also known as pepper squash.

Even though it is considered a winter squash, acorn squash belongs to the same species as all summer squashes including zucchini and yellow crookneck squash.

The most common variety comes in a mostly green outer shell, often with a splotch of orange on its side or top. However, varieties, including the Golden Acorn and the White Acorn, offer gardeners and cooks options. This versatile squash also grows in variegated color.

The acorn squash resembles its name in shape, an acorn. They usually weigh between one to two pounds and generally grow between four and seven inches long. This hardy squash also keeps for several months, making it a great item to store for yumminess all winter long. Just be sure to store it in a cool, dry location.

Since acorn squash is versatile, it can be baked, microwaved, sautéed, or steamed. Some cooks like to stuff it with rice, meat, cheeses, or vegetable mixtures. You can also toast the seeds of the acorn squash much like pumpkin seeds.

Nutritionally, the acorn squash offers a good source of dietary fiber and potassium. It also has some vitamin C and B, magnesium, and manganese.

Ten Surprising Military Terms That Made It Into Sports

Published on September 7, 2024

Credit: Riley McCullough

Military terminology often infiltrates our everyday language, and sports are no exception. From strategies to equipment, the lexicon of warfare has found its way onto the field, court, and pitch. We can blame the Ancient Greeks for this connection, where many feats of athleticism - like javelin throwing or chariot racing - were clearly inspired by war and military tactics.

Although we can be certain that there is no comparing the realities of war to sports, no matter how rough the plays, the association is deeply embedded in our language. Here are ten curious instances where military terms have made it into sports!

1Counterattack

Credit: Chino Rocha

In many sports, a "counterattack" is a swift offensive maneuver launched in response to an opponent's attack, exploiting vulnerabilities in their defense. This term mirrors military counter-offensives, aiming to turn the tide of battle in one's favor by thwarting an enemy offensive and recovering lost ground in the process.

A saying attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte illustrates the vital importance of this strategy both in war and sports: "The greatest danger occurs at the moment of victory."

2Fore

Credit: Courtney Cook

In golf, "fore" is a warning shouted by players to alert others of an errant shot heading their way. The most accepted etymology for this term claims that it comes from "beware before," a term artillerymen used to shout to warn fellow soldiers standing nearby that they were about to shoot their cannons.

Its modern usage in golf serves basically the same purpose, as it allows nearby players to react quickly and seek cover to avoid being struck by a stray ball.

3Bomb

Credit: Vince Fleming

In volleyball, a "Filipino bomb" or just a "bomb" is a powerful, high-speed serve aimed at overwhelming the opposing team's defense, also called a spike. As its name suggests, the term originated among volleyball players in the Philippines, in the 1910s.

Like its military counterpart, this aggressive tactic seeks to create chaos and disrupt the opponent's strategy.

4Blitz

Credit: Geoff Scott

In football, a "blitz" refers to a defensive strategy where additional players rush the quarterback to disrupt the offense.

Meaning "lightning" in German, the term is a reference to the blitzkrieg tactics developed by the German forces during World War II, where a quick combined arms attack would be used to disrupt enemy lines and rapidly advance positions on the battlefield.

5Air Raid

Credit: Keith Johnston

In football, an "air raid" refers to a series of aerial attacks, typically involving long, high passes aimed at breaching the opposing team's defense. This term quite plainly draws parallels to military airstrikes aimed at penetrating enemy lines.

Coaches such as Mike Leach and Hal Mumme have popularized this offensive scheme since the late 80s, but the term has been applied to similar tactics since at least the 1940s.

6Minefield

Credit: Pedro Henrique Santos

In motorsports, a "minefield" often describes a very difficult track or even a section of a track that is littered with debris, oil slicks, or other hazards, making navigation treacherous for drivers. This term mirrors the dangers of navigating an actual minefield, where caution and precision can make the difference between life and death.

7Full Court Press

Credit: Markus Spiske

In basketball, employing a "full court press" means aggressively defending the opposing team from one end of the court to the other, effectively "surrounding" the opposing team and blocking action.

Reminiscent of military encirclement strategies, this tactic aims to apply relentless pressure on the offense. Perhaps not coincidentally, the strategy was first applied by college coaches whose previous experience was with military sports leagues.

8Dud

Credit: Jose Francisco Morales

During World War I, baseball lingo and military lingo happened to live in extremely close quarters, as baseball was one of the most popular sports among North American troops stationed in the European trenches at the time.

This led to many baseball terms being applied to the battlefield, and also a few military terms being introduced into baseball. For example, the term "dud" was often used to describe a bad pitch, a term originally used for ammunition that failed to detonate upon impact.

9Sniper

Credit: gerhard crous

In hockey, a "sniper" refers to a player known for their exceptional accuracy and ability to score goals with precise shots. Much like a military sniper who carefully selects and executes their targets from a distance, a hockey sniper strategically positions themselves to take advantage of scoring opportunities, often trying to catch the goaltender off guard.

10Neutral Zone

Credit: Martin Reisch

In American football, the "neutral zone" is the area between the offensive and defensive lines before the play begins.

Like many terms in gridiron football, it has a military origin. In fact, it is directly borrowed from military demilitarized zones, which represent an agreed buffer area between opposing forces where neither side holds dominance.

September 7th Celebrated History

1813

The United States earns a nickname that sticks. What's in a name? In many cases, a lot. Sometimes a name has a significant meaning. In the case of the nickname Uncle Sam, the name originates with a meat packer named Samuel Wilson. During the War of 1812, Sam supplied barrels of beef to the Army. On the barrels, the letters "U.S." were stamped - United States. However, soldiers began calling the supply "Uncle Sam's." Over time, the nickname came to refer to the U.S. government.

Later in that century, Uncle Sam began to have a recognizable face. The cartoonist Thomas Nast gradually created the character we recognize today.

1880

George Ligowsky receives a patent for clay pigeons designed for trap shooting. He later invented a device for launching the targets into the air, too. He designed the targets (which weren't made of clay, nor did they look like pigeons) to replace the glass targets trapshooters used at the time. Before glass targets, trapshooters released live pigeons from cages to shoot them.

1888

Doctors give Edith Eleanor McLean a fighting chance at life when the premature baby is placed in an incubator. In the United States, she becomes the first infant treated in an incubator. However, hospitals and doctors took their time to grasp the importance of the invention. One German physician set out to change that by putting babies in incubators on display. Dr. Martin Couney displayed premature babies in an exhibit at the 1896 Berlin Exposition. Over time, as the technology saved more and more lives, they found their way into hospitals all over the world.

1903

As the age of the motorcycle grew, the New York Motorcycle Club organized the Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM). The FAM served several purposes including protecting the rights of motorcyclists, regulating racing, and promote the good roads movement. After 16 years, the organization folded.

1914

The phrase is considered the unofficial motto of the United States Post Office.

1915

Johnny Gruelle receives the patent for the Raggedy Ann Doll (D47789). The iconic doll with red yarn hair and a triangle nose became the ultimate rag doll. Before the Cabbage Patch Kids, before Barbi, or even before the Kewpie Doll, Raggedy Ann found her way into the hearts of children all over the country. In 1919, Gruelle began publishing books featuring Raggedy Ann, too. As a talented artist known for his political cartoons and comics under the pen name Grue, he also illustrated his own books.

1916

Congress passed the Workmen's Compensation Act. The legislation protected employees who were injured on the job and were not able to work. One key movement that began in the 1800s, the labor movement, directly influenced new legislation on behalf of workers.

1921

Atlantic City, NJ hosts the first Miss America Pageant. Representatives from eight cities, including Atlantic City, participated in the two-day event. And the winner of the 1921 Miss American Pageant was...Miss Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C.

1927

At the age of 21, Philo Farnsworth demonstrates the first electronic television. That same year, he patented his invention. Several manufacturers pursued Farnsworth, including RCA. However, the young inventor chose to strike out on his own.

1936

The Boulder Dam begins operations. Originally named the Boulder Canyon Project, the massive 60-story dam diverted water from the Colorado River. It also created hydroelectric power for a growing Southwest population. At the time of its completion, it was the largest dam in the world. Recognizing Herbert Hoover's efforts to make the project possible, the dam was eventually renamed the Hoover Dam.

President Theodore Roosevelt helped bring the canal to realization and construction began in 1903. The historic endeavor took 11 years to complete.

Slice of Nostalgia

This was a thing back then...

Ain't There No More New Orleans

Derby Gisclair

Hong Kong

It is perhaps fitting that, on what would have been my father's 100th birthday, I recall the family's non-traditional Sunday lunches at Hong Kong on Lakeshore Drive overlooking the last remaining stretch of the New Basin Canal. There are those who would say that my memory of the menu is nothing more than nostalgia, but I remember the food as being quite good. Yes, it was a highly-Americanized version of Cantonese cuisine, but it was shared with family. As I recall, one of the hostesses was a patient of my dad's and always went out of her way to make sure the family got a great table overlooking the marina.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

French Market Restaurant - The Original

You cant walk down Decatur St without smelling our famous Crawfish and Shrimp Boil! Consistently voted one of the best New Orleans restaurants, come experience authentic Creole and Cajun dishes made from scratch daily and some of the best seafood in the French Quarter.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

JEFFERSON PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

6400 AIRLINE DRIVE | METAIRIE, LA

Metairie, Louisiana)—Jefferson Performing Arts’ upcoming production of School of Rock: The Musical will feature 36 local performers, half of whom are local middle and high schoolers. Several cast members will perform with real instruments live onstage at Jefferson Performing Arts Center September 13-22, 2024.

Based on the 2003 movie, School of Rock: The Musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school who turns his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical features 14 new songs and songs from the original movie.

Adult principals include Nathan Parrish as Dewey Finn, Rachel Looney as Rosalie Mullins, Melissa McKenzie as Patty Di Marco and Daniel Rubio as Ned Schneebly. Youth principals include Andrew Letellier as Zack Mooneyham, Merah Benoit as Katie, Drago Han as Lawrence, August Doussan as Freddie, and Olivia Yi as Summer Hathaway.

Nathan (Dewey) and four youth performers will be playing their instruments live on stage: Merah Benoit (Katie) will play bass guitar, Drago Han (Lawrence) will play keyboards, August Doussan (Freddie) will play drums, and Andrew Letellier (Zack) will play guitar. Some of the youth musicians are making their acting debuts (August Doussan) while others are seasoned performers (such as Merah Benoit) who are learning their instruments for their roles in this show.

Brief Bios of Principal Youth Performers:

Merah Benoit’s (Katie) performance career began as a Lost Boy in the mainstage JPA production of Peter Pan at the age of 5. She went on to perform in other JPA productions including Sound of Music (Marta). She is an emerging film and TV actress with a resumé that includes working with many award-winning artists and directors including Will Smith in “Emancipation”, Renee Zellweger in “The Thing about Pam”, Jon Batiste’s music video “Freedom” and her most recent role as Emma Stone’s daughter in “Kinds of Kindness” by award-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos.

August Doussan (Freddie)  has been learning from local legendary drummers like Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore, from an early age. At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. His musical journey has taken him across 38 states on tour with his guitarist dad. This is his JPA debut.

Drago Han (Lawrence) is a freshman at The Willow School. This is his first JPA production. Previous roles have been Calvin in San (Le Petite Theater), Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors (Willow School), Mike Teavee in Willy Wonka Jr. (Willow School), Ugly in Honk Jr. (Saint Martin’s), and Carlos in Descendants (Saint Martin’s).

Jon Cleary Kicks Off Star-Studded Line-Up for Friday Concerts

The Historic BK House & Gardens is offering music afficionados a special treat this fall with a new Rhythm & Roses Concert Series, extending the popular spring concerts into September, October and November. British-born, American funk and R&B musician Jon Cleary will kick off the series with a solo performance on Friday, September 27, at 6 pm. Cleary, an accomplished pianist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, will perform from 6-9 pm in the beautifully manicured BK House Parterre Garden, 1113 Chartres Street.

Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.

Future dates include:

October 4:            Jason Neville Funky Soul Band

October 18:           Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique

October 25:           Dusky Waters & Rachel Maxann

November 1:         Jelly Joseph

Tickets are priced at $30 for nonmembers and $25 for BK members and are available at www.bkhouse.org. Food and beverages will be sold on site. Because beverage sales support on-going maintenance of the garden, outside beverages will not be permitted.

Concert-goers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance due to anticipated popularity of the event and size of the historic setting. Limited seating will be provided; however, attendees may bring small chairs provided space allows.

Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans.  The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception.  Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.

Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29. The fundraiser will be held from 5-8 pm, featuring John Boutte in the Courtyard and Amber Rachelle & the Sweet Potatoes in the Parterre Garden and a delicious Sunday Supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events. Co-chaired by Sarah & Marshall Hevron and Carroll Gelderman Zimmer & Emory Zimmer, proceeds from the festive event will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry, as well as the BK Endowment Fund.  Tickets start at $100, with various levels available for individuals and sponsors, and may be purchased at www.bkhouse.org.

Future events will include additional concerts, literary programs, and a holiday wine tasting. Information about BK membership, which provides for a discount to many Museum events, as well as current and upcoming events at the BK House may be found at www.bkhouse.org.
