Looking for Greeters!
MoM is asking for several members to be dedicated "Greeters" at Mass. The idea is not only to greet new individuals who attend Mass (which we collectively do well) but also to interact with and direct transient individuals who may be unhoused and seeking support or use of the restrooms and perhaps the showers. Please contact Kerri Anderson or David Cloyd at marymagdalafc@gmail.com if you are interested in serving.

November Eco Tip: Radon in Your Home
Radon is an invisible, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas created during the natural decay of uranium in the soil. Radon is everywhere, and Colorado has higher concentrations than other regions. Radon gas is drawn into homes through cracks and openings in basements, crawl spaces and slabs. Radon levels vary from house to house and are dependent on a number of factors including the age, quality and upkeep of the home.
Radon is a class 'A’ carcinogen, and long-term exposure to elevated levels has been linked to lung cancer. About half of all homes tested in Fort Collins have radon levels above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). Your chances of getting radon-induced lung cancer depends on how much radon is in your home, the amount of time you are exposed to it, and whether you are a smoker. Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in individuals who have never smoked. There were an estimated 21,000 deaths in the U.S in 2018 due to radon-induced lung cancer. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer in the US. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. Don’t blame radon for cold or flu symptoms; there are no known symptoms of short-term exposure to radon at the levels typically found in homes.
The City of Fort Collins sells discounted short-term ($6) and long-term ($20) radon test kits and are available for purchase at the Fort Collins Senior Center (1200 Raintree Drive). If you reside outside the City limits you can order a radon test kit from the Colorado Public Health & Environment (CDPHE). City code does not require radon testing or mitigation, but The City urges everyone to test their home for radon.
The most common approach for radon mitigation is Active Sub-Slab Depressurization. The idea is to create a vacuum under the foundation or crawlspace which draws out and exhausts radon gas outside the building. These systems can be active or passive, where a passive system vents radon through a pipe that extends from the soil to the roof and acts like a chimney to create a slight vacuum on the soil. An active system simply adds a fan to the passive system to forcibly draw radon from the soil.
For more information, go to https://www.fcgov.com/airquality/radon, which is the source of this Eco Tip.

Habitat for Humanity Build Day Coming Up on Saturday, November 22nd
Dear All,
Greetings to our wonderful Mary of Magdala community!
As the autumn season embraces us, I wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you for your incredible generosity and unwavering spirit of service. Our recent Oktoberfest celebration on September 27th was a resounding success, not only as a joyous gathering but also as a powerful demonstration of our collective impact. Thanks to your enthusiastic participation and contributions, our Church was able to donate over $3,500.00 to Habitat for Humanity! This substantial gift will directly support their mission of building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter, and it truly reflects the compassionate heart of our parish.
Beyond financial contributions, another profoundly impactful way we can support Habitat for Humanity is by offering our time and talent. This hands-on commitment to building homes for families in need is a cherished tradition that many churches, including our own, participate in throughout the year. It's a living testament to the enduring legacy of President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, who famously continued to build Habitat homes well into their late 90s, inspiring generations with their dedication to service.
We've had some remarkable individuals from our congregation already step forward. Last year, Katie Lea and Alex Brown braved a chilly Saturday on April 20th to lend their support, and earlier this year, on January 16th, Mary Anne Heyman also dedicated her time to a build day. Their commitment and effort are truly inspiring, and we are immensely grateful for their willingness to embody our church's values in such a tangible way.
If you've ever considered volunteering but hesitated due to a lack of building experience, please cast those worries aside! Habitat build sites are incredibly welcoming and accommodating. There are dozens of tasks available, from painting and landscaping to assisting with framing and site cleanup—many of which require no specialized skills. You'll find abundant guidance, comprehensive safety briefings, and a supportive team of experienced volunteers and staff ready to assist you every step of the way. Plus, every volunteer is treated to a delicious hot lunch, fostering a wonderful sense of camaraderie and community.
Our next opportunity to make a tangible difference is fast approaching! Please mark your calendars for **Saturday, November 22nd**. We invite you to join us for a fulfilling day of teamwork, purpose, and community spirit with a truly wonderful crew.
To express your interest or to learn more about how you can participate, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can reach me directly by calling or texting at 970-481-5541, or by sending an email to lenandgin@yahoo.com.
Thank you once again for your incredible spirit of giving and for being such a vibrant part of the Mary of Magdala family.
Warmly,
Leonard Russ
