Recording of "American the Beautiful?" Presentation by Ruth Alexander and Jared Orsi
For those who might have missed it, the wonderful presentation by Ruth Alexander and Jared Orsi on Thurs night has been post-processed and uploaded here.
Ruth and Jared presented the juxtaposition of an American “narrative of innocence” against the realities of the two “original sins” of indigenous removal/erasure/genocide and African enslavement which have and continue to create challenges to our understanding of idealized founding principles that have never actually manifested freedom for all. Interspersed throughout the presentation were accounts of individuals like Phyllis Wheatley, Touissant Louverture, Zitkala Sa, Martin Luther King Jr, and others who have held a “mirror” to our historical consciousness, and called for change.

Your Conscience and Your Vote
-
Know the Candidates: Look past slogans and advertisements. Study the candidates' actual voting records, past actions, and stated platforms. (An older article but still discusses the moral dilemma. Here)
-
Identify Core Values: Determine what matters most to you. This might include human dignity, fairness, the environment, healthcare, or economic security.
-
Weigh the Issues: Recognize that few candidates will match your views on every single topic. Evaluate which issues are essential to your conscience and how different policies impact the common good.
-
Reflect and Decide: Make your choice independently in private, guided by your own reflective judgment.
