Heart Rate Variability (Stress Levels) in the News: HRV is Key to Health
pain figure
I routinely use Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in the clinic to evaluate patients' stress levels during treatment and over time.
A new study shows that healthy HRV levels correlate with mental resilience. In other words if your HRV levels are high, you respond to challenges more easily, and don't get thrown off.
A few months ago, I blogged about a similar study showing healthy HRV correlated with self-rated well being better than inflammatory and other commonly used biomarkers.

Migraine Supplements Update
There have been more studies on migraine and supplements.
I still recommend Riboflavin, but at 400mg. Magnesium at 600 mg, and Melatonin at .5 to 1 mg. Vitamin D lacks good evidence, but it is valuable for many other health issues, so I still recommend it for everyone!
Sherlock Holmes
Can Higher Levels of Stress Actually Help Mental Flow? Sherlock Holmes was Famous for Concentration and Flow
T his study looked at HRV and found that at higher levels of LF/HF (signifying higher stress levels) lead to better concentration, or "flow". Flow is a a state described on wikipedia as "the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting loss in one's sense of space and time." So sometimes a higher state of vigilance is helpful! Since I've seen this sometimes in the clinic, maybe I can use this information.
