EARLY SEPTEMBER | LABOR(ED) DAYS EDITION
Labor(ed) Days - New albums from Harvey McLaughlin, Churchwood, Really Red Tribute, Lizard-People on Parade and more
Labor(ed) Days...
The last few editions of this newsletter have leaned fairly heavily into hyperbole. The political, economic and social climates are challenging. We all know that. People know where they stand and what they stand for or against and whatever I think or might have to say about isn't going to do much to sway anyone from their currently held convictions. I haven't received any negative feedback but going forward through the election I will only ask those who do respect my opinion to remember the human cost of their vote and to forego the temptation to simply stand with the candidate who will deliver the most perceived economic benefit to them - because that perceived benefit is often inaccurate and normally short-lived, and, the human toll we're paying right now is too great.
I'm endorsing all the non-Lizard People* candidates in case you were wondering. There are actual human beings in both parties (though not necessarily in equal ratios), even if they're not the ones we see on TV daily. I plan to vote a straight warm-blooded, soul-having ticket. You're intelligent and sensitive people. I know you can figure out who the human beings are. Do the right thing by your fellow citizens and for your country.

Enough of that and on to the MUSIC! Saustex has two new full-lengths coming out October 16th - 'Rascality' from Harvey McLaughlin and Churchwood's newest 'Plenty Wrong to Go Awry' - I'm really proud of both albums and am happy to be trying to return to business as usual - that is, doing albums in CD and LP formats and a more usual promo job. We're also accepting pre-orders for the fabulous new Really Red tribute and have a couple of digital singles and a Saustex and friends sampler to be released in fairly short order. More on those in about ten days plus an announcement about an annual event that's coming together rapidly.

The world came to pretty much a complete stop for a while and while we're not anywhere back to where we were I'm willing to roll the dice and make the financial commitment to keep some new releases coming along. I REALLY appreciate all the support the fans of the individual artists and loyal label customers have shown through the protracted uncertainty. (For my part I've tried to donate whatever profit I might normally make to a variety of causes.)

To that end I'm extending the slightly rebranded "LOOT THIS!" SALE (originally "Suffer Not In Silence Sale" aka "The Corn-Teen Deal") one last time through 11:59pm MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH. The charitable donation of 25% of the gross sale now benefits The Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization focused on racial justice and monitoring hate groups. Scroll lower in the email to get back catalog at a greatly discounted price while also helping this organization. AND because to the best of my knowledge I'm not a Lizard Person if you order 12 or 18 hours late I won't deny your "golden ticket" to LOOT THIS!
(Also, if you're waiting for this or that ship to come in and not able to order immediately please drop me an email to jeff.smith(at)saustex.com by the deadline and we'll make arrangements - no doctor's note necessary.)

And -- again although this letter is designed to generate money and perpetuate the label - remember that most all of the releases (with a few exceptions) are available on the major streaming platforms and a growing number are available via Bandcamp - I realize that times are tough and it doesn't cost anything to listen!

DON'T FORGET THIS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 4TH IS ANOTHER BANDCAMP FEE-FREE FRIDAY. STOP ON IN! MOST SAUSTEX T-SHIRT STOCK IS NOW POSTED IN THE MERCH SECTION.

*DISCLAIMER: WHILE I DO NOT ACTUALLY BELIEVE IN THE EXISTENCE OF LIZARD-PEOPLE I DO APPRECIATE THE METAPHORICAL VALUE AND TOO-CLOSE-TO-REALITY COMEDIC POSSIBILITIES OF THE TERM.

HARVEY MCLAUGHLIN SHOWS THE KIDS HOW IT'S DONE WITH AN EXPERT'S GUIDE TO 'RASCALITY'
rascality
ras·cal·i·ty
/rasˈkalədē/
noun
mischievous or dishonest behavior or activity.

From the unhinged mind of singer/songwriter Harvey McLaughlin comes ‘Racality’ - twelve tracks of throwback rock and roll that’s reminiscent of the great piano rock albums by artists such as Warren Zevon, Elton John, Tom Waits and Randy Newman with its own brand of cheekiness and an updated sensibility. On the heels of 2018's full length ‘Tabloid News’ and the 2019 EP ‘Automaton’, ‘Rascality" features McLaughlin's weird and wild brand of storytelling - reveling in subjects ranging from Chinese restaurants to carnival excursions to the red pyramids of Mars and everything between.
"I made an effort to cover all the basics," says McLaughlin. "Wendigos, voodoo hexes, fortune telling moles and public executions, it's all there.”

CHURCHWOOD BRING IT AGAIN IN TROUBLED TIMES WITH 'PLENTY WRONG TO GO AWRY'
'Plenty Wrong to Go Awry' is the fifth full-length album by Austin-based avant-garde blues band Churchwood. Even though the album was recorded in the summer of 2019 and mixed in the spring of 2020 it thematically addresses the current dystopian times we live in through a poetic and sometimes historical lens on ‘Ain’t Your Choir’ and ‘Steal It Back’ but still manages to have some fun on more traditional roots roadhouse tunes ‘Tantamount’ and ‘Fixin’ to Crawl’. It possesses the dense, challenging music and dizzying guitar interplay that fans have come to expect from the band and will appeal to fans of Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits who like their poetry with some twisted roots and garage infused oomph.

'TEACHING YOU THE FEAR...AGAIN' A TRIBUTE TO REALLY RED
It’s fairly hard for young people now to imagine but there was a time in Texas when simply walking down the street in punk regalia was a proposition that might cost one their life or subject them to being hassled by the police. Recent events show that while fashion may not put you on the hit list there is still an abundance of oppression, racism and police brutality not only in Texas but around the country. Outside of other early Texas Punk and Hardcore bands The Dicks, The Big Boys, Offenders and M.D.C. there were few voices in this state’s rock’n’roll scene who stood up to the injustice besides the bands mentioned above and Houston’s Really Red.

While probably the least well known of the five bands with most being turned onto Really Red's music via the ‘Let Them Eat Jellybeans’ compilation on Alternative Tentacles Records - I will argue that their lyrical rails are the most succinct and concise, almost to the point of being clinical. And, their music was farther ranging than the other bands pulling in elements of the avant-garde and what would become known as post-punk. With no disrespect to the other bands who I consider heroes and friends I maintain that Really Red’s debut album ‘Teaching You The Fear’ is the best Texas hardcore album of all-time.

So - I was honored when Bob Weber, Really Red’s drummer and the driving force behind C.I.A. Records, asked if Saustex would assist in the distribution of the new tribute to the band’s work ‘Teaching You The Fear...Again’...the CD features 34 tracks (and 36 page booklet!) and the double LP (one on black vinyl, one on white vinyl) has 39 tracks and includes new interpretations of Really Red’s songs by artists including The Dicks, Mudhoney, M.D.C., Jello Biafra, The Bellrays, Doomstress, Verbal Abuse, Sugar Shack, Hickoids, Hamell on Trial and many, many more.

We're still awaiting shipment of the CD and LP stock from the manufacturer in the U.K. Our best guesstimate at the moment is that we'll begin shipping US and Canadian orders around November 1st, 2020. Because I have my machinery set up a little better than the folks at C.I.A. and it's more in the wheelhouse of my daily routine they'd rather have me fulfill the North American orders so Saustex is offering the CD and LP at a 10% discount to their asking price (well actually about 12% on the CD.)

All orders placed through Saustex will immediately receive a code for unlimited streaming the entire 39 track project AND download in your preferred digital audio format.

2019 RECENT RELEASES TO DATE AND VINYL AND CD SPECIALS
Hamell On Trial 'The Pandemic Songs' benefits national food bank charities.
I apologize to regular customers and readers that are just now getting the news on this, but, there has been a lot going on...America’s Anti-Folk Warrior Hamell On Trial released ‘The Pandemic Songs’ via Saustex Records on June 19th. Thanks to the generosity of some Canadian fans of the artist and label the cost of manufacturing the limited-edition CD are completely covered and 100% of the proceeds from this album are being donated to national food bank charities, with almost $3500 already having been passed along to Feeding America (which translates to almost 35,000 meals.)

Ed Hamell aka Hamell On Trial offers his unique perspective on life during lockdown with 'The Pandemic Songs'. Ed explains the impetus behind the new album, recorded in his Ossining, NY apartment on his $80 Android cell phone in this way: "We've all been cast into these strange times. Each of us looking for grounding: home schooling, home working, losing employment, balancing anxiety with a brave face, concern for loved ones, trying to connect when we're not supposed to connect. Some of us on the frontlines saving lives, witnessing death at an unprecedented rate.
As the great Hunter Thompson once said, 'When the going gets weird the weird turn pro.” My lifeblood financially, but more importantly spiritually, is performing. I’ve found great comfort and release doing Facebook live-stream concerts (five so far). I had initially and naively scheduled only four, thinking the pandemic would not stretch past May. I exhausted my repertoire. I decided to challenge myself to write 15 songs in 15 days - “inspired” if you will, by the pandemic. Here you have the best 9 I think.
A major figure in the music business who prefers to remain anonymous reached out to me and asked to hear the songs. I sent him the Facebook link. In a couple of days he reached out again and suggested putting out the songs via streaming networks. I immediately called Jeff Smith at Saustex Records and in less than one minute he green lighted the project and committed to a special CD release. I recorded the 9 songs in 3 days, doing the artwork at night. My son Detroit, who helps with all my tech support, and I had witnessed a line 7 blocks long of our neighbors waiting for food from a truck because they needed to eat. It was a no brainer to donate the proceeds of this to charity. Hopefully you'll get a few laughs, maybe some comfort and maybe you’ll be swept away from some harsh reality for a little while. And, if some stuff makes you a little uncomfortable...well Jesus - it's a f*cking Hamell record."

We sold through the initial allocation of 175 of the 300 CDs to Bandcamp and as much as it pains me to do so if you'd like a copy of the PHYSICAL CD please order it from Amazon here:
ORDER 'PANDEMIC SONGS' AT AMAZON (Although it's currently showing out-of-stock they are just being delivered.)

If you ordered via Bandcamp your CD went out the end of last week and should be well on its way or have already been delivered. IF you're only interested in the DIGITAL VERSION please purchase via Bandcamp which yields a donation of 90% of the purchase price to charity.

Props to all for your generosity and support of this project.
FRONTIER DAN and the HICKOIDS
'SIX MILES FROM THE SUN... STUDIO'
Longtime readers have heard me gush about Danny Grace aka Frontier Dan for some while now. I met Danny (a college chum of Davy Jones') back in the mid-80's when his band The Rockin' Guys hosted the Hickoids for a number of shows in Little Rock. And, I have been promising to "make him a star" for the better part of a decade...but those who know him and have seen him perform know that he is one already.

Davy is gone of course but we feel his spirit whenever Danny joins us on stage. We decided to try and capture some of this magic in the studio over Memorial Day weekend 2019 in Memphis. Originally we wanted to record at Sun Studios but couldn't seem to do any better than the exorbitant hourly tourist or "sucker rate" even after tapping some of my contacts from the time I spent living there in the 90's (next door to Sun incidentally.)

However, a hero came along in the form of Dale Watson who generously offered up his direct-to-mono tape facility, the impeccably named Wat-Sun Studio, free of charge. Austin good guy and friend Cris Burns flew in to engineer the session, Danny's brother David offered spiritual guidance and now a little over a year later it's seeing the light of day.

Recorded in one afternoon and without the benefit of any rehearsal it's unlike anything the Hickoids have previously released but I believe captures some of that spirit (and goofiness) referenced above. It contains eight fairly recognizable tunes (at least before we got hold of 'em) on the physical edition and nine on the digital including 'You're Gonna' Miss Me' serendipitously captured one week before Roky's passing, 'Green Door' (recorded before the release of 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood') and audience pleaser 'Glorious Heroin'. It's an imperfect ride that hopefully conveys the moment and the fun that we had making it.

This title is available exclusively via Bandcamp on digital and a 10" clear plastic lathe-cut mini-LP in an edition of 50 (with only 35 available to the public) and will ship inside a couple of weeks. (Stock is down to the last few copies of this puppy as of this writing.)

'Ed's Not Dead -- Hamell Comes Alive!' strictly limited edition of 100 LP and digital download arrives!
Saustex Records’ is proudly reissuing the 20th anniversary edition of the Hamell on Trial live album ‘Ed’s Not Dead ---- Hamell Comes Alive!'.
The CD edition is long out-of-print and this marks the first broad streaming and digital release and vinyl edition. The LP is a hyper-limited edition of 100 copies on opaque white vinyl and includes an oversized reprint of the cartoon booklet contained in the original CD, hand-glued cover and a download card with bonus edit tracks. Originally the album was slated to begin deliver some time in March but the big lacquer plant fire in February and now the current pandemic situation delayed the manufacture. We're happy to announce they are now in house and pre-orders will began shipping Monday June 29th - the pre-order gets you immediate access to the digital download and streaming edition.

The album is culled from live shows in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego back in 2000 when Ed was the regular opening act for Ani DiFranco and was also on the roster of her Righteous Babe Records. Ani had her front-of-house engineer record Ed’s show nightly with the unspoken intention of releasing a live album for her label.

Things were going well...Ed was playing for much larger audiences than he was used to and Ani’s audiences were very gracious and receptive. Then, following some dates with Ani as Ed resumed his smaller scale club touring, tragedy struck when Ed was involved in a serious automobile accident that laid him up for nine months. He broke three vertebrae, his wrist, ankle and had 52 staples in his head. He had to wear an upper body brace for the duration of the 9 months.

As a working musician whose bread and butter is live performances this was devastating. Luckily, some friends came to the rescue in the form of Ani’s manager Scott Fisher who gave Hamell the tapes so that he could self-release an album and keep the money, and his good friend George Fontaine (now president of New West Records) who ponied up the money for CD manufacturing. Ed’s longtime road manager Ricki C sifted through the tapes and culled the best performances.

IMPERIAL WAX - New lathe-cut single 'Bromidic Thrills' b/w 'Bloom & Wither'

Revisiting THE SERVICE INDUSTRY with the new retrospective best of ‘Entry Level Positions: A Beginner’s Guide to The Service Industry’
Those of you who are relative newcomers to the world of Saustex Records probably aren’t aware that we had a short-lived offshoot imprint called Sauspop Records about a decade or dozen years back. Basically the idea was that Sauspop would offer releases that were less roots and punk oriented and I dare say more polished and pop-leaning - not that it what supposed to be some sort of cash grab, it was really more about expanding horizons. If nothing else it affirmed that I know very little and care even less about what is actually “popular”.

The centerpiece of this new venture was a group of former bandmates, co-workers and folks I’m still happy to call friends in Austin known collectively as The Service Industry. The Service Industry is fronted by Kansas City transplant Mike McCoy (Cher U.K) on lead vocals with Julie Lowery on occasional lead vocals, backing vocals and percussion while one of my best friends in the world Andy Thomas shares guitar duties with Robbie Araiza (The Wayouts), and Julie’s significant Hunter Darby (Wannabes, Diamond Smugglers, Shoulders, Hickoids) plays bass alongside Travis Garaffa on drums to hold down the rhythm section. This bunch of lifers coalesced at their shared workplace, Austin’s now defunct Dog & Duck Pub, where they were employed variously at one point or another as bartenders, cooks or handymen in the ongoing effort to support their rock’n’roll habits while making a living. What began as the routine sniping and bitching associated with restaurant work took on a life of its own in the form of the band.

The band recorded four full-length albums in a little under five years ‘Ranch is the New French’ (2006 Build Gut/Sauspop), ‘Limited Coverage’ (2007 Sauspop), ‘Keep The Babies Warm’ (2008 Sauspop) and ‘Calm Down’ (2010 Sauspop). Though inactive for most of the past decade outside of a few reunion shows they released a new single ‘I’m on My Way’ b/w ‘Winter is a Submarine’ on Austin’s Flak Records at the end of 2019.

Current events show the band’s work to be especially prescient. While there is plenty of inside joke snark there is also ample thoughtful, informed vitriolic lyricism dealing with income inequality, immigrant labor, the general lack of respect shown common workers, corporate greed and the devolution of America cast against a varied musical backdrop encompassing Heartland Power-Pop, rootsy ballads, sleek-ish indie pop rock and obtuse punk tinged with psychedelia. It seems like the right time to revisit their catalog with this digital-only retrospective. They deserve a first, second and third listen.

'Entry Level Positions' is available beginning Friday May 1st via Bandcamp (along with the rest of their back catalog.) You can pick up the compact disc versions as part of the Corn-Teen Deal below (that's all four albums for only $20 postpaid in the U.S. that includes a $5 donation the charity mentioned!)
