Advice from Matt Baird
Flight Instructor, Savannah Aviation
Saint Simmons Airport, GA (KSSI)
"As a Flight Instructor, I always stress to my students the importance of collision avoidance. A simple distraction like picking up a dropped pen or a quick glance at the knee board can lead to catastrophic results both on the ground and in the air if the pilot is not paying attention to their surroundings and most importantly, not flying the airplane. A thorough understanding of the conditions that can lead to collision avoidance is not only critical in all stages of flight, it's one of the most important topics brought up during a pilot check-ride. On This Day in Aviation History...
On July 1st 1976, The National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution opened in Washington, D. C. as a center for research into the history and science of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. It also operates two landmark facilities that, together, welcome more than eight million visitors a year, making it the most visited museum in the country. Click the link to learn more..
Don't Let Fear Hold You Back From Achieving Your Aviation Goals!
Contrary to popular belief, fear and anxiety are a normal part of life and necessary for human survival. Webster's Dictionary defines fear as "an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger" while it defines anxiety as "fear or nervousness about what might happen". If you're a student pilot, fear and anxiety is an every day occurrence but with continued experience, both feelings eventually subside. What's with all these Fighter jets?
If you live around Savannah, you've likely heard the rumblings of low flying fighter jets that seem out of place compared to the military transports and Army Helicopters that call coastal Georgia their home. What you may not realize is Savannah is also home to one of four specialized Military Training Centers run by the Air national Guard where Airman and their aircraft hone their combat skills before deploying to hotspots worldwide.
