Advice from Christian Rushing
Flight Instructor, Savannah Aviation
"The one thing that bugs me more than anything as a flight instructor is students who don't know how to use proper pitch and power settings to maintain a stabilized approach to landing. A stabilized approach is crucial in both VFR and especially IFR conditions and can lead to accidents or worse if the proper pitch and power settings are not established correctly from the very beginning of the descent. Ammeter vs. Voltmeter. What am I looking at and why do I care?

Every aircraft checklist includes a part where the pilot must visually check the ammeter and/or voltmeter..but why? Most private pilots, even after they earn their license, only have a basic understanding aircraft electrical systems and know what to do if the electrical system fails. Ammeters and Voltmeters give pilots information that can prevent problems but only if the pilot knows what to look for. Hilton Head Lighthouse...more than just a tourist destination!
If you frequent the low country, you're likely familiar with the red and white stripped landmark in Hilton Head, SC. Besides being a great photo backdrop, the light house serves a dual purpose as an airborne VOR checkpoint for the Savannah Airport. Just dial 115.95 into your navigation radio and fly over the lighthouse on an azimuth of 097 degrees from the VOR. If your Course Deviation Indicator reads + or - 6 degrees, you're good to go! There are scarier things in this world than "Murder Hornets"!
If you live around Savannah you've likely seen yellow helicopters making low passes over rivers and marshlands. What you may not realize is that these aviators are on the front lines in a battle against an enemy armed with West Nile, Dengue, and Zika virus. Further, these helicopters also provide search and rescue as well as law enforcement support for our fellow citizens. Click the link to learn more about the yellow "little birds" of Coastal Georgia.
