Monthly Newsletter - May 2020
Greetings!

May 24th is Aircraft Maintenance Technician Day so we've decided to dedicate this month's newsletter to the unsung heroes of Savannah Aviation who keep our aircraft up and running so the rest of us can enjoy the thrill of flight. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and technical skill to ensure our aircraft are safe to fly and Savannah Aviation's team of licensed aircraft/powerplant mechanics and highly trained aircraft maintenance technicians do their very best to ensure the highest quality care is taken for any aircraft that comes to our hangar.

Special thanks also goes out to the extensive commercial logistics supply chain that enables critical parts to be sourced and delivered so our maintainers can do what they do best. From aircraft equipment manufactures to the commercial carriers that deliver these parts to our door, a lot of work goes into making sure the aircraft you fly is safe and airworthy. Next time you visit us at 34 Hangar Road, be sure to thank our maintainers for getting their hands dirty so you don't have to.
Congratulations to all our successful April 2020

Advice from Swaid Rahn
Chief of Maintenance, Savannah Aviation
"Perhaps my number one advice for all aircraft renters and student pilots, especially in colder weather, is to give the engine time to warm up before adding take off power. Too often I see cylinder head damage caused by not allowing the oil to warm up and lubricate the engine before transitioning to the maximum power needed for take off. Pilots should always follow the aircraft's operating handbook but my personal recommendation is to keep the engine at 1000 RPMs from engine start to taxi to departure in order to extend the life of the engine. Click the button below to read a great article from a designated pilot examiner on how best to warm up the engine before take off."
Is performing preventative maintenance a good idea?

The answer is, it depends. While CFR Part 43 spells out what you can do for preventative maintenance, some tasks are better left to the experts who trained in accredited aviation maintenance schools and know how to fix problems in minimal time and effort. Click the button below to learn more about the pros and cons of preventative maintenance.

Savannah Aviation Says goodbye to one of our founding flight instructors
Corey Gravil. CFI, CFII, MEI
"I began flight instructing in Savannah in October 2018 while the ink was still wet on my Flight Instructor Certificate. Since then, I've flown over 1,250 hours out of Savannah with 1,000 of those hours as an instructor. I have signed off 26 students to earn various certificates and ratings from Private Pilot to Commercial Multi-Engine add on. I also got to experience the high blood pressure inducing moment of sending a student out to solo an airplane for their very first time on seven occasions. All of the time I got to fly in Savannah was an honor and a privilege.

I want to say to everyone whom I had the pleasure to fly with here in Savannah..from the student pilots who seemed like they were trying to kill me, to the extremely experienced pilots who actually taught me more than I taught them..THANK YOU for trusting me to help achieve your aviation goals and dreams."

Savannah Aviation would like to thank Corey for all his hard work and wish him the very best in all his future aviation endeavors.
