Update from Marianne & Scott:
One of my favorite things about the Holiday Season is how so many people are in the giving spirit! This week was full of helpful events! We loved being able to bond with some of our partners and prepare breakfast last Monday at The Ronald McDonald House! We also attended several Chamber of Commerce events, it was great hearing all the wonderful progress Savannah is making with the help of the community! On Saturday morning Chelsea Phillips & David Pence were "Celebrity" runners for the Rape Crisis 8th annual Reindeer Run! David came in 3rd place in his age range!! Congratulations!! That afternoon, Marianne Rapped in the Oglethorpe Mall for Greenbriar Children's Center!! We also had the pleasure to see Cynthia Creighton Jones of Cape Creations present a check for over $1000 to Family Promise of Greater Savannah, a family homeless shelter. Click here to watch video :-)
This week we are super excited about the cocktail class tonight at Congress St. Up above the Prohibition Museum in City Market to see Kayla Black & the crew! Wed. morning we will be at the Holiday Breakfast with the Chief Financial Officers (CFO)Council's  meeting! And of course we will be running around doing some last minute Holiday Shopping!

Congratulations to Patt Gunn and team of Saltwata Players for organizing 3 Events in Savannah - for  JUBILEE FREEDOM DAY 2017' is the celebration of 153 years of freedom in America. Savannah's enslaved Africans were emancipated on cold winter's morning of Dec. 21, 1864 by the U.S. Union Soldiers with Gen. Sherman in his 'March to the Sea'. 'Jubilee' pays homage to the 225,000 troops and 95,000 men -including Free men of Color from the North that served with the troops and were Abolitionists and Anti-Slave Activists. Come 'Jine WE!' as we host 'I Shall Call Their Names' - a reading of thousands of names, slave narratives and freedom songs - hot apple cider n' more! OUR THEME: 'What Does Freedom Mean to U in 2017? For More Info: (912) 547-5937....Come meet us there- THE SALTWATA PLAYERS - Ase'+ FREE EVENT!   Events include Tue Art Exhibition at Sulfur Studios, Thu, Call Their Names at Civil Rights Museum and Thu evening Jubilee Feast at Mt. Crystal Beer Parlor
Picture a 1933's speakeasy with a 45 foot long bar with 26 tabs and over 80 beers, walls filled with pictures of days last like the Tybee Depot, Ginnie's Night Club and Daffin Park Skating Rink and you have the West Jones Street treasure - The Crystal Beer Parlor! Bustling with locals, visitors and tonight, a motorcycle club, I take a seat at the bar and wait for Paige Brown, the petite and powerful manager of CBP to slow down for a quick chat. Perusing the varied menu, I am trying to decide between their signature 1/2 pound Burger with a fried egg, pimento cheese or a fried green tomato, Shrimp and Grits or their signature Crab Stew when I see legendary singer Trae Gurley arrive. Having hosted politicians, movie stars and families for over 84 years, seeing Trae reminds me of how this eating establishment has always been here hosting our citizens, creating memories and being a living piece of history in our backyard. Bring your family, your out of town guest, or just for a weekday lunch and make sure to order the battered and deep Fried Pound Cake - your life will change!

Why you Need
a Mattress Protector

1. Keeps the mattress clean. Human bodies are pretty gross. A mattress protector prevents any of the stuff from getting into the mattress and can be taken off and washed.
2.)Keeps the mattress feeling in "like new" condition for longer. Perspiration (or any moisture, like spilling a drink) will wear down the foams in the mattress, shortening the comfort life. It's a similar effect to a kitchen sponge after too many uses.
3.)Helps prevent dust mite allergies from acting up.  Dust mite allergies are very common and can lead to issues such as sneezing, runny nose, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Dust mites eat dead skin cells, and there will be dead skin cells in your mattress if you don't use a protector.

Tip of the Week by Insurance Expert!
Use Extension Cords Properly
  • Don't attempt to plug extension cords into one another
  • Make sure extension cords are properly rated for their intended use, indoor or outdoor, and meet or exceed the power needs of the device being used
  • Keep all outdoor extension cords clear of snow and standing water
  • Do NOT overload extension cords
  • A heavy reliance on extension cords is an indication that you have too few outlets to address your needs. Have additional outlets installed where you need them
  • Inspect cords for damage before use. Check for cracked or frayed sockets, loose or bare wires, and loose connections
  • Do NOT nail or staple extension cords to walls or baseboards

Winter Maintenance
Fuel:
Put a bottle of fuel deicer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that's kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming.
Oil:  Change your oil and oil filter as spe cified in your manual more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.
Cooling System:  The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.
Heater/DefrosterThe heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Plumbing Tip of the Week:

A drop of water down the drain can seem pretty insignificant, however, leaky faucet drops can add up. Go to https://water.usgs.gov/edu/activity-drip.html to calculate how much your leaky faucet is costing you.

Holidays After a Death of a Loved One:

Even during the best of times, the holidays can be exhausting and stressful. If you're facing the holidays after the death of a loved one, celebrating may be the furthest thing from your mind. In fact, you may wonder if you'll ever enjoy them again. However, by giving yourself permission to grieve, taking time for yourself and finding new ways to celebrate the holidays and the deceased, you can survive the holiday season.

Pest of the Week: Tawny Crazy Ant
Introducing Georgia's newest invasive insect: the tawny crazy ant, and just like the invasive Formosan termite, this one creates a huge potential problem for property owners. This is an outdoor pest, and so far the closest it has gotten to Savannah is Albany, but, now that it is in the state, it is only a matter of time before it comes to Savannah.
Why is it a concern? Tawny crazy ants build colonies that number in the billions! The infestations are so large they completely cover the ground, and they make the ground appear as though it is moving, and they can render a victim's yard uninhabitable. They are also extremely difficult to eliminate. Why? Well, if you have a billion ants and you eliminate 99% of them, you still have a million ants remaining, which can recolonize very quickly. Your only hope of controlling these insects is with the assistance of a pest management professional.
We hope they never come to Savannah, but if they do we are here to help.
