SPRO Launches New Essential Series
SPRO is bringing value to its "Essential" line up of baits that every angler should have in their arsenal when hitting the water. If you're a new angler or seasoned veteran, you know that there are three styles of baits bass anglers must have at the ready. Popper, square bill and minnow style baits remain staples in the bass fishing arena, and now SPRO is offering three new baits at a value price to arm anglers with the tools they need to compete at the top level. SPRO National Sales Manager Syd Rives felt there was a need for a lineup of baits that catered to anglers of all skill levels, but leaned in towards those beginner anglers as well. "We've seen a huge surge in people getting involved in fishing for the first time, or revisiting their passion for the sport recently. Our goal with the Essential Series was to offer proven fish catching shapes that incorporate all of the high quality components that both SPRO and Gamakatsu have become known for at a great value." said Rives. The E Pop 80 serves as the popper bait providing anglers a perfect bait for the aggressive topwater bite. The E Pop 80 has a loud popping action and knocking sound- calling in fish from a distance. The bait is designed to cast easily and can be walked back to the boat, creating life-like action that bass can't resist. Paired with Gamakatsu's #4 treble hook on the front and a #4 Gamakatsu feather treble hook on the back, you are sure to hook up when an aggressive bass blows up your bait. The Zero Minnow 130 is one of those baits that work anywhere you fish. Fished in early spring, or the dog days of summer, wake baits are hard to beat. The minnow style baits have great castability, making it easy to cover water. With a diving depth of 0-1' ft, these baits can be used in several different ways to entice bass to attack. With its loud knocking sound and #4 Gamakatsu treble hooks, the Zero Minnow 130 is worth a look. Both the E-Pop 80 and the Zero Minnow 130 are in stock and ready to ship. Check them out here.

Duckett Goes Old School For Success

While most of the recent talk in the bass fishing world has revolved around technological advancements and how they have changed the game, some anglers still embrace the old school techniques that helped get them to the highest level of the sport. Major League Fishing pro Boyd Duckett has relied on one of those old school techniques for years. The split shot rig has been a staple for Duckett since his early years working to make it to the professional level. "The split shot rig is something I have utilized for years, and it is as effective now as it has ever been," said Duckett. Consisting of a small round split shot weight positioned above a 3/0 straight shank hook, this rig is about as simple as it gets. "The beauty of the split shot rig is that you can catch fish with it year round. Whether you are faced with cold post frontal conditions, or highly pressured waters during the spring and summer it is going to get you some bites," Duckett continued. Utilizing a 6'8" Duckett Fishing Black Ice spinning rod paired with a SWX-2500 Duckett Paradigm spinning reel spooled with 8lb Vicious Pro Elite fluorocarbon, Duckett typically reaches for a Gary Yamamoto Senko as his bait of choice. "It's hard to beat a Senko on a split shot rig in my opinion, I might vary the size and style of the Senko, sometimes opting for the thinner version, but nine times out of ten that is what I will fish on a split shot rig." said Duckett. Whether he is targeting docks, wood, grass, or rocks Duckett rarely varies his retrieve when fishing the split shot rig. "I am always going to be fishing this rig slowly, trying to maintain contact with the bottom occasionally giving it short hops. You tend to get a lot of bites on the initial fall, or after you have hopped it off of the bottom and it is settling back down." Duckett concluded. Give the split shot rig a try the next time you are on the water, you may be pleased with your results.
