Lenexa, KS - On Tuesday night, the Lenexa City Council rejected the recommendation to close Ad Astra Pool and voted proceed with further discussions about an aquatic facility at the site. In addition, the Lenexa City Council did accept the recommendation to develop a modernized community-wide aquatics center with the appropriate mix of amenities at Indian Trails.
The Save Ad Astra Pool Coalition released the following statement regarding tonight's actions:
"We would like to thank the Lenexa City Council for rejecting the recommendation to close Ad Astra Pool. This was a significant victory for the neighborhoods around Ad Astra and all of the residents of Lenexa who feel so strongly about the importance of our community pools. Tonight's vote represented a key moment in this process - for two years, we have been advocating for an affirmative vote that rejected a recommendation to close Ad Astra Pool, and tonight that occurred.
"We are appreciative of the fact that several members of the City Council, some who were inclined to close the pool before, seemed to be persuaded by the many e-mails they received over the past few days urging them to keep Ad Astra Pool and continue discussions with our coalition about the best way to proceed forward.
We also would like to thank the dozens upon dozens of Lenexans who wrote into the City Council urging them to save the pool. We would like to thank the volunteers who distributed around 2000 fliers over a short period of time. And we would like to thank those who spoke tonight in favor of keeping the pool. We are forever grateful.
"Our coalition, comprised of people throughout Lenexa, is committed to advocating for a pool facility that continues what has worked about Ad Astra Pool while making significant improvements that will make it a highlight of our neighborhood for decades to come. Whether that is a total rebuild or a significant remodel, time will tell. Wherever that process leads, we pledge that our organization remains fully committed to ensuring Ad Astra Pool remains part of our community for future generations to enjoy."
