“The Legacy Project and Black Stereo” exhibit, honoring Third Ward’s musical legacy, continues through August 11. Artist Tierney Malone, The Collective and Community Music Center give tribute at Hogan Brown Gallery

Community Artists’ Collective, Community Music Center of Houston and Hogan Brown Gallery are proud to announce the Annual Legacy Project, a month-long celebration of Black Music Month. The Legacy Project honors local and national individuals' contributions to music.

“BLACK STEREO,” a collaboration between artist Tierney Malone, Community Artists’ Collective, and Community Music Center of Houston (CMCH), opened in June, designated as Black Music Month, at Hogan Brown Gallery, 2310 Elgin.

The event celebrates the many musical artists who have come from or have ties to Houston’s Third Ward. The Legacy Project celebrates musicians and music educators.

Robert Hodge, curator at Hogan Brown Gallery, and Michelle Barnes, executive director of the Community Artists’ Collective, are co-curators of the exhibit.

Photography Grant

The Community Artists’ Collective is honored to receive a grant from the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation for an archiving project of our photography collection. The Collective has amassed a significant collection of photographic prints and images created by participants of the photography program facilitated in the early 90s, and are also honored to hold a portion of Louise Martin’s photographic works in our collection. We plan to use this grant to digitize and archive selected works from these collections and make them available for public viewing.

Louise Martin was an African American photographer from Brenham, Texas, who ran her own photography studio in Houston during the late 1940s for nearly 45 years. She was known for tinting her portraits by hand, a notable skill that added a special touch to portraits before color photography.

We look forward to embarking on this project and sharing the collection with our community!
