The Office of Energy Resource (OER) announces the first in a series of virtual public workshops in response to Governor Gina M. Raimondo’s
Executive Order 20-01
Advancing a 100% Renewable Energy Future for Rhode Island by 2030.
The first virtual workshop will be held
July 9, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. – 12 p.m. via Zoom
(Zoom link will be sent out several days before the workshop).
During this first Public Workshop, OER will introduce the State Project Team and its consultants at The Brattle Group. They will discuss some initial principles to help guide the work ahead, talk through proposed analytical approaches, and – most importantly – begin a dialogue with and receive input from the community to enhance the project and its outcomes.
About the Executive Order
On January 17, 2020, Governor Raimondo signed an executive order committing Rhode Island to be powered by 100% renewable electricity by the end of the decade. Her executive order directs OER to conduct an economic and energy market analysis and develop actionable policies and programs to reach this bold, but achievable goal.
OER is conducting an energy and economic analysis as it works to develop policy and programmatic recommendations to achieve the Governor's goal and advance the state's economic, energy, and environmental interests. Stakeholder participation will be a key component of this work to help inform realistic pathways that work for Rhode Islanders, while driving the state toward a lower-carbon electric supply.
The Governor's 100% by 2030 renewable electricity goal is one part of a broader state strategy to address the climate change crisis by reducing economy-wide carbon emissions. Three years ago, the Governor set an ambitious goal to accelerate Rhode Island's clean energy supply ten-fold by the end of 2020. Thanks to continued growth in local renewables, competitive procurements of well-priced, carbon-free resources at scale, and nation-leading energy efficiency programs, the state is on track to reach that goal by the end of this year. OER is also engaged in transforming the heating sector. OER and the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers released their Heating Sector Transformation report on April 22 (Earth Day) outlining pathways to achieve a clean, affordable, and reliable heating future for the Ocean State. The report was conducted pursuant to Governor Gina M. Raimondo's
Executive Order 19-06
, calling for the agencies to lead a transformation of the heating sector by 2050 that reduces greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring Rhode Islanders have access to safe, reliable, and affordable heating solutions. The report and meeting materials may be viewed at
