In District 65, we know our schools are the heart of our community, and we all play an important role in the individual and collective success of our students. Our administration and school board take our financial challenges seriously. Our district must be one that serves ALL students well, now and for generations to come.
By July, we will have reduced nearly $20 million from the budget in two years, but more work remains. For several years, district leaders and board members have discussed in public meetings the need for potential school closures and consolidations. This is in response to an aging population and declining student enrollment, underutilized buildings, and dated facilities—all schools except one are about 67 to 120 years old and are in need of major repairs.
We know this is difficult. Change is never easy, but it’s also an opportunity. Our goal is to engage parents, caregivers, staff, students, and community members in a transparent process with clear criteria. Many have said they understand the need for school closures but want to ensure decisions are both data-driven and made with integrity and clarity. We couldn't agree more; this is our North Star.
I hope you’ll join one of these important conversations as we shape the future of education in our community and for our lighthouse district—together. Wishing you a joyful spring break!
