TIG's First Official Employee: Mrs. Hanote

Mrs. Hanote with her family and TIG co-founder Paul Ramsey

Because TIG needed to better understand the educational system in India, we have hired an educational consultant, Mrs. Hanote. Mrs. Hanote has worked with TIG in a number of roles pretty much since our founding: Translator, teacher, tutor, and now overall educational consultant. Mrs. Hanote is also the mother of Sam and Zion, who are two of TIG’s students. Her main role is to make sure our students are taking the steps they need to pass the 2 national examinations, one taken in grade 10 and the other in grade 12.

The National Exams

In India a student can get a 10th grade diploma and a 12th grade diploma. Some very good schools offer only 10th grade diplomas. Students in these schools, after passing the exam, can get a job, undertake formal training in an area that will lead to work, e.g., in computers or electricity, transfer to a 12th grade school, or study on their own to prepare for a college entrance examination.

The 10th grade exam is a “general” test, covering the major subjects the student has studied through grade 10, e.g., English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies. After passing this exam if the student wants a 12th grade certificate, s/he must select an area of concentration for 11th and 12th grade study: Mathematics Science, Biology Science, Agriculture Science, Commerce, or the Arts. The 12th grade exam tests in the area of concentration and, of course, must be passed to get the 12th grade diploma.

A student can have poor grades but if s/he passes these national exams, s/he will get a diploma. Over the years we have come to understand how important these exams are, so our primary educational goal is to prepare our students for the national exams.

TIG STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS: Muskan

When TIG first began, our goal was to help students reach the 10th grade. We've since watched many students surpass that goal and get their 12th grade diploma. This is Muskan’s goal. Her mother and 4 younger siblings live in Khajuraho but her father works in Delhi, so Muskan has taken on extra responsibilities at home to help her mother. Despite these added responsibilities, she has passed her 10th grade exam and has decided to study the Arts for her 12th grade diploma. We are so excited to continue supporting Muskan as she continues her schooling!
