On Thursday, July 3rd, TASC celebrated the grand opening of our new Mojave location! The event was packed with fun: games, a raffle, delicious food, and fantastic live music. Beyond the festivities, our staff had the opportunity to connect with community members and families, sharing the many services TASC offers, from employment and volunteer opportunities to independent living support.
With this new location, we aim to expand TASC’s mission and resources to individuals seeking fulfilling, fully integrated lives. Thank you to the Mojave community for welcoming TASC with open arms - this is just the beginning!
| | Staff went all in on the USO theme, bringing spirit, creativity, and plenty of vintage flair! | Jazz quartet JustUs4 delivered a patriotic set full of energy perfect for the occasion. | | TASC's HR department shared opportunities to join our mission and grow your career while making a difference. | | Our Independent Living Services team highlighted client success stories and the impact of personalized support. | | Our nursing team honored the theme with vintage military style while showcasing TASC’s essential health and support services. | | A look back at TASC’s roots in the San Fernando Valley and how we’ve grown to serve hundreds across multiple regions. | | A heartfelt thank you to our incredible community for showing up and supporting TASC in full force. | | Celebrating Disability Pride Month | | | | July is Disability Pride Month! This month recognizes the importance of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law and celebrates the disability community’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness, advocate for inclusion, and embrace identity with pride. The ADA, signed in 1990, prohibits discrimination based on disability and was a major step forward in the fight for equal rights, just 35 years ago! | | At TASC, we believe everyone deserves the chance to live a full and meaningful life - on their own terms. Disability Pride Month is a time to uplift the community, celebrate all the beautiful differences that make us who we are, and challenge outdated ideas of what’s “normal.” It’s also a reminder that respect, empathy, and access can go a long way in making a difference in someone’s life. | | Ed Roberts (1939–1995) is widely recognized as the father of the independent living movement. After contracting polio at age 14, he became the first student with severe physical disabilities to attend the University of California, Berkeley. He later co-founded the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley in 1972, a peer-run model that helped define independent living advocacy nationwide. Roberts once said, “We realized that we could change some things, and the first thing we’d do is change our own attitudes to ourselves.” | | Judy Heumann (1947–2023) is often called the Mother of the Disability Rights Movement for her decades of leadership in disability advocacy. After being denied a teaching license in New York because she used a wheelchair, she successfully sued the Board of Education in 1970 and became the first wheelchair user to teach in the city’s public schools. She helped organize the historic 504 Sit-In in 1977, played a key role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and held senior disability policy roles under the Clinton and Obama administrations. Her work helped shape both national and international disability rights efforts. | | Movie Nights at the Sanctuary | | | | |
