Musicologist and Associate Professor in the Brandeis Music Department
This talk will examine jazz musicians' engagement with the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s.
This period found a range of musicians participating in the movement in various ways, including many who were not usually associated with political engagement.
Musical examples will include Louis Armstrong, Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, and others.
