  LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
State Primary Elections Shake Up the Fall and Upcoming Season

Much has been said about the outcomes of Tuesday's Primary Election, but just below the radar screen were some surprises that promise to shake up the coming legislative session.

Key General Assembly committee leaders and major policy influencers all fell victim to more progressive candidates. Delegate Joseph Vallario, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee for the past 25 years was defeated. On the Senate side, Senator Mac Middleton, Chair of the Senate Finance Committee was defeated as was Senator Nathaniel McFadden, member of the Senate Budget and Finance Committee. While not official, Senator Joan Carter Conway, Chair of the Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee appears headed for defeat as well. All of those outcomes create significant challenges for the business community in the coming session as these legislators are considered moderate Democrats that work closely with Senate leadership.

You can expect much more information about the upcoming legislative session at our annual Legislative Preview Breakfast this fall, but in the mean time, you can read a lot more about the statewide legislative races here. We have also posted a complete list of results from Tuesday's Primary Election below.
