Upcoming Webinars

Duct Sealing, Leakage Testing, and Ventilation – Code Requirements are Changing

Join us for an in-depth webinar designed specifically for building officials, plan reviewers, and 3rd party energy verifiers to navigate the latest HVAC energy code requirements related to duct sealing, leakage testing, and ventilation. As energy codes become more stringent, understanding compliance requirements is critical for ensuring efficiency, indoor air quality, and overall system performance.

This session will provide a comprehensive look at IECC and ENERGY STAR requirements for duct leakage testing, approved sealing methods, and mechanical ventilation verification. We’ll also cover field testing procedures, compliance verification strategies, and common mistakes that can lead to test failures.

What You'll Learn:

  • Duct leakage has a major impact on energy efficiency and code compliance – even minor leaks can result in test failures and higher energy costs.
  • Proper testing procedures and documentation are crucial – knowing how to conduct and interpret a duct leakage test ensures compliance and avoids costly rework.
  • Mechanical ventilation is often overlooked in compliance reviews – understanding airflow verification and balancing is key to meeting code requirements and improving indoor air quality.

Energy Inspection - Mechanical Ventilation Testing

There continues to be lots of questions around the requirements for mechanical ventilation. This is a great webinar to review.

During this webinar, we will study and break down the different ventilation equipment that is available and go through the different testing methods being used. The 2021 IECC testing is now required, but there’s no standard testing method being used. Let’s look at some data about the testing result differences when using different equipment to perform the test.

Presenter: Randy Plumlee, Senior Manager, Building Performance, SPEER

What We're Reading

Reading the Roof After a Snowstorm - Energy Vanguard

Though we don’t get a lot of snow in Texas, the same can be done when we get frost. I have a hard time driving through my neighborhood in the early morning during a frost and NOT looking at everyone’s roof, noticing all the spots where the frost is missing. This is a good sign of warm air leaking out of the home.

In this article, Allison Bailes discusses how snow patterns on roofs reveal insights into a home's heat loss and insulation effectiveness. By observing areas where snow has melted versus where it remains, homeowners can identify potential issues such as air leaks, insufficient insulation, or poorly sealed ducts. For instance, melted patches on north-facing roofs, which receive less sunlight, often indicate heat escaping from the interior. Bailes emphasizes that complex roof designs, like those with dormers or vaulted ceilings, are particularly prone to such problems due to the challenges in proper insulation and air sealing.
