FACADE GRANTS
|
DOWNTOWN BUILDINGS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL AID
Tifton's Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is implementing a
Facade Improvement Grant (FIG) program
to enhance the exterior facades of older buildings in the historic downtown district.
The program encourages
reinvestment in downtown Tifton through a
matching 50-50 grant -- for one-half of the total proposed facade
 project --
up to $5,000.
The FIG program applies to buildings that are more than 50 years old within the downtown historic district. The DDA is encouraging the preservation of historic structures through renovation and restoration of commercial and mixed-used buildings' facades.
Facade Improvement Grants will serve as reimbursement for approved projects; information and documentation
must
be submitted to a review panel for approval.
Along with applications,
which
will be available by Nov. 1, accompanying documentation, photos and proposed improvements are encouraged.
Some
downtown
business owners have
inquired about technical assistance for design improvements, says Lequrica Gaskins, downtown development director.
"There is great news," Gaskins says. "Our Main Street program does have a great relationship with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and their Office of Downtown Development, who has the capability of providing affordable, professional design services."
For questions about the FIG program or design assistance, contact Gaskins at 229-391-3977.

La Fiesta del Pueblo Celebrates 20th Year Saturday
South Georgia's largest festival celebrating Hispanic culture marks two decades when it gets underway Saturday morning at Tifton's Fulwood Park.
Beginning at 10 a.m. and going until 9 p.m., La Fiesta del Pueblo offers nonstop entertainment, authentic Hispanic food, vendor booths, children's area and health/education booths.
First held in Omega, the festival moved to Downtown Tifton in 1999, where it stayed until it outgrew the environs around City Hall and was relocated to Fulwood Park in 2003.
The festival's purpose is to:

- promote cultural awareness among South Georgians;
- provide opportunities for Hispanics to get visibility in the community;
- promote a sense of pride and unity among Hispanics; and
- share information on health, education, community activities, youth organizations and social services.
The festival attracted an estimated crowd of 13,000 last year. It ends Saturday evening with its traditional street dance to live music from 6-9 p.m.

TANNER
|
 |
Savannah Tanner, who
grew up on a livestock farm, had worked at an animal hospital
while
in high school, which led her to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.
Tanner thought she ultimately
wanted to become a
veterinarian but her
ABAC experience helped change her mind.
"I actually started off as a vet med transfer down at
ABAC," she told
The Claxton Enterprise. "But when I got there ... I realized that instead of being involved in livestock from a veterinary perspective, I really just wanted to be involved in
agriculture as a whole."
