Today we look ahead to the possibilities for the future of healthcare, but before we do, we must pause to honor the person who brought us here: Mom.
A celebration of motherhood is a celebration of the gift of life. We hope everyone had a chance to reflect on the miracle of birth last Sunday and that all Mom’s were showered with love. Because I have been focused on reducing the number of emails that flood your inbox, I neglected to send my traditional fond wishes to all Mothers. Please accept this belated, never-ending wish for happiness and love.
Times have certainly changed since the days when my children were born, particularly as they relate to the way in which human life is cared for in our standardized healthcare system. In my last article, I outlined some of the ways in which the role of the good doctor has become distanced from the care of the whole patient. Today, I offer some hope.
There is no doubt that we each must take charge and become our own healthcare advocates. Keep good records. Trust your instincts. And do whatever you can to stay healthy today. Yes, it is still important to find a doctor you trust, but you must also be careful to stay on a wellness path as best you can. Today’s typical sickness path is a bumpy ride of required tests, standard diagnosis, prescription regimens, and a ton of paperwork. Better you care for yourself now than subject yourself to the frustration of navigating a system that has sadly become one that serves profit before human.
Further, lean on those who, like the mother who was there for your first breath, care to see the whole you. True doctoring still persists in this age of impersonal service. And you deserve it.
We’re here for you.
Stay well,
Dr. Pfeiffer
