Inspired by their love for the Metropolitan Opera's production of Akhnaten, twin sisters Amy and Terry Lawrence set out to re-create it in animation, crafting costumes, sets, and filming scenes in stop-motion, blending Terry's theater expertise with Amy's film background. They have gone on to produce many more, from music videos to full-fledged musicals. See their unique films and the sets and figurines on display at JAM.

Groovalicious

Chodus. Coffin Flop. The Y Lie. Dylan Patrick Ward & The Lovable Losers. This quartet of diverse music-and-visual artists laid down everything from folk to metal at White River's Main Street Museum late last month. The event achieved total heavy-osity, and JAM was there.

Embodied Art

South African visual artist Nomusa Makhubu curated the exhibit "Embodied: Artist as Medium" at Dartmouth's Hood Museum. Her photographs reimagine denigrating depictions of African women. "When I started, I couldn't figure out how to undo these images or make them speak a different language," she said.

Slow Civil War

"The situation now is not terribly hopeful." So said Jeff Sharlet, director of Dartmouth's Creative Writing program, in a Howe Library lecture last fall. The New York Times hailed his exploration of the nation's troubled state, The Undertow, as one of 2023's notable books. "Even here in our blue bubble there's not a safe space... It's important to try to understand how to live in this moment, how to be kind in these moments."
