Brandi joined Say Yes Guilford as an intern, and quickly proved to be an invaluable member of the team. Now as Assistant Director of Student Outreach and Postsecondary Access, she helps GCS Students find their best path to college or career.

Four years ago the first Say Yes Guilford scholars had just graduated from high school. They were looking forward to college and the opportunities that education would provide; and paying for school was within reach thanks to an exciting community initiative: Say Yes Guilford. Our community made an inestment in GCS students, promising to help make college attainable and affordable. Today many of those students are graduates, making valuable contributions to our local economy.

Since the class of 2016, Say Yes Guilford has worked tirelessly to keep those promises, and this year we set a new record for scholarship support: $8.7 million to more than 1400 students. Scholarships are only part of our commitment to students. This year we pioneered the HELPS program to help many of our young students improve reading proficiency, and added workshops and one-on-one sessions to help our high school students transition to college or career. 

When our world shifted this spring, it was impossible to ignore the inequities that exist in education. Say Yes Guilford responded with money for laptops and internet access to make online learning possible for hundreds of students, and we increased communications for families through webinars, videos and personal phone calls. There is much more work to do. 

We must address barriers to student success. We must work to change the very system that builds these barriers. We must respond to challenges thoughtfully and with deep respect for our diverse community. We can do this together. We can keep the promises we made four years ago to our children. They are counting on us, and all of our futures depend on it.

On the basketball court, Katie Lewis was always thinking about the next game, the next possession, the next play, and at the same time she was right in the action giving her all. She needed those qualities to complete her degree in health sciences at Greensboro College. She needed them to face some personal crises. She needed them to weather a global pandemic.
