Alexis and Tammy joined the Say Yes Guilford team this summer as school navigators. They will help connect schools and families to community resources that can help remove obstacles to learning.

This was not how we planned the first day of school. None of us wanted to start the school year with remote classes for K-12 students. We hoped every college student could remain on campus longer than the first few weeks. We hoped this pandemic would be a memory. We had to adjust our expectations.

We also had to check our vision, to clearly see and respond to the inequities that are so clearly defined in this crisis. We have an opportunity to address obstacles to learning that exist in schools and the community. We must act now.

At Say Yes Guilford that means finding a way to meet students where they are now, and lifting them up to the next level. Next week we begin a free, virtual tutoring program, pairing work-study students and community volunteers with GCS students needing help in reading, math, science and social studies. GCS high schoolers who volunteer can earn service-learning hours tutoring their fellow students. We will again offer free SAT and ACT classes this fall, and scholarship registration opens October 1.

It wasn’t her classes or her friends that made the biggest impression on Kayla Blanfort during middle school; it was her mother. “My mom started school when I was in 6th grade. It made me so proud of her; I didn’t realize how important college was until I saw her do it.”

She set out to make sure her parents felt that same way about her.
