President's Greetings
Durable Transformational Change
Dear Saybrook Community,
At a recent meeting with Saybrook community members, an individual offered a comment, reminding me of the power of our community: “Saybrook has been and continues to be my anchor during these difficult times. I don’t know where I would be without the school.”

Her sentiment is shared by many across our community who believe that our mission - powered by our students, alumni, faculty, and staff - provides great relevance today perhaps more than ever before. Indeed, through these challenging times, leaning into our community has been a necessary balm.
As we turn our attention to August and the new academic year, Saybrook continues advancing the health and well-being of our community and the communities we serve. In addition to our virtual residential conference and courses, beginning this Fall several initiatives are underway including but not limited to:
  • our emergent Antiracism Collaboration education series led by Dr. Crystal Ishihara and the Antiracism Task Force (see information below);
  • a community-wide effort exploring and developing concrete equity and inclusion action plans;
  • the launch of Saybrook Serves – a community service initiative for faculty and staff with the goal of supporting community needs across the country as well as in Greater Los Angeles;
  • expansion of our new virtual community platform for students;
  • launch of the new President’s Innovation Council driven by students, faculty, alumni, business and community members;
  • creation of a new promotion, advancement, and compensation committee supporting faculty and staff engagement/retention;
  • launch of the new Student Excellence Taskforce to improve/enhance student engagement and university services;
  • alumni council planning of our first homecoming event;
  • university planning for our 50th anniversary year, beginning in January 2021.

Of note, this Fall’s residential conference will be completely virtual given the continuing challenges associated with the pandemic. Our team is working to ensure a positive experience for all participants, finding ways to expand virtual community and engagement. While I will certainly miss seeing so many of you in person, I do look forward to connecting online with each of you in early September.

Lastly, we are adding in new features to this monthly update. Along with sharing progress on university goals, the Saybrook leadership team will also provide short updates for each of their areas with the goal of keeping our community informed. Additionally, we have added in an events section highlighting certain happenings at the university. I hope you find these beneficial.

VPAA Update

New Programs
The College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences is pleased to announce the launch of a new degree program, the PhD in Integrative Social Work, at the start of the Fall Semester 2020. A person-centered approach to health and well-being in training students to transform their communities is of primary importance, along with assisting students in becoming more adept at problem solving and engaging in personal and relational development. The new Department Chair, Trent Nguyen, PhD, has already been working closely with all University Departments in anticipation of the start of the program.  

Saybrook University recently received approval from the WASC Senior College and University Commission for two new programs that will be offered as part of the Department and Leadership Management including a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). More information will be provided in the near future regarding the start dates for both programs.

  • Deploy community-wide student virtual forums, enhancing engagement
  1. We are working to have all of the fall starts enrolled in the Saybrook Virtual Community; also working with peer mentors to create an engagement strategy for the virtual community for the fall.
  2. We will refresh the student gateway with updated info and images.
  • Establish Student Excellence Task force to improve and enhance student engagement and university services
  • Identify and create dynamic feedback loop processes for faculty, staff, students & alumni leading to greater engagement
  1. Collaborating with Student Excellence Task force to adapt a student experience survey that will run in spring 2021.
  • Develop and deploy professional development & networking tracks for students & alumni, promoting professional advancement and lifelong learning.
  1. Rolling out Student Professional Development Reimbursement Fund for fall semester.
  2. Working with Carmen to finalize the thematic calendar for implementation in the fall.
HR Update

  • Engagement Survey
  1. The engagement survey is complete with a 30% response rate. The committee will meet in August to review the responses and create a plan with a timeline to communicate the results back to the community, develop initiatives to increase engagement and measure progress along the way.
  2. Peter Fontaine and Allison Wall were the two winners in the survey raffle drawing. Congrats!
  • Stephany Loli has been hired as the new HR Coordinator. Stephany will play a key role in many of the HR goals including promotion/advancement, salary benchmarking, engagement, staff community service and the humanistic values course pilot.
  • Federal Work Study Update
  1. The Department of Education has waived the community service FWS requirement for the 2020/21 year. Community Service FWS opportunities have been put on hold through the end of the year. 
  2. Fall Term
  • Adjunct contracts for the Fall Term will be issued to those that have been assigned to a course starting the week of August 3 and will be issued weekly as courses are added and/or assigned.  Adjunct payments will be processed after add/drop for all states except California. Adjunct faculty that reside in California will track hours in Workday. If you missed the information session or need more information, please contact Joline Pruitt at jpruitt@saybrook.edu.

Saybrook Alumni Homecoming will be held virtually on September 13, 2020. Details will be forthcoming regarding time and registration links.

Major events to be held such as our first annual Mind, Body and Health Fair (Virtual and On-ground) in May 2021; and the first annual Saybrook Film, Book and Poetry Festival in July 2021 .
COVID-19 Updates
Pasadena Campus Visits

Our Saybrook Reopening task force continues to monitor and adhere to the Covid-19 city, state, federal and CDC guidelines. The Saybrook campus at 55 W. Eureka will remain closed through January 31, 2021. Visits to the campus remain on an emergency and pre-approved basis only. Please continue to send your emergency visit requests to Val Smith, Joline Pruitt and Karyn Lee.

Residential Conference
The University will hold its Virtual Residential Conference from Thursday, September 10, 2020 through Wednesday, September 16, 2020 via electronic platforms (e.g., zoom). All participants (Students, Faculty, Staff, Guests) should register for the conference through the following link:    

All registered attendees will receive a follow up sessions event link approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the conference with specific information regarding the conference proceedings. Fall 2020 graduates will receive information from their Department regarding program ceremonies/events. Please feel free to reach out to your Department Chair, Admissions Director and to Devin Byrd, PhD Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), at dbyrd@saybrook.edu /626.316.5320 for any questions you have.  
Town Hall Meetings
Saybrook Town Halls are designed to provide an opportunity for the sharing of personal experiences as a result of COVID-19, the protests and a discussion of the pathway forward. It has been our practice to provide informational updates during these meetings and we will continue. Many members of our Community have been and are still impacted by recent events across our nation and the world. Saybrook University remains committed to its principles and believes that now more than ever, space and time is needed for the members of our University Community.  

Saybrook Town Hall Meetings will be held every other Wednesday at 3:00 pm PST and Thursday's at 8:00 am PST. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at 3:00 pm PST and Thursday, August 13, 2020, at 8:00 am PST.

Anti-Racism Collaboration
On May 25, 2020, George Perry Floyd Jr. was killed by white police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for 8 Minutes and 46 Seconds. And the world watched as a community that has been discriminated against since at least 1619, took to the streets to express their outrage in the form of predominantly peaceful protests.

Shortly after that, Saybrook University hosted a town hall where Dr. Gina Belton related the question posed by Dr. Shawn Ginwright “What would we do if we could resolve racism in TWO YEARS?” which helped inspire Saybrook University to assemble the Anti-Racism Collaboration which will focus on continuing the conversations surrounding racial injustice that have been occurring more publicly and consistently since the passing of Mr. Floyd. We hope to remember the many who have fallen, such as Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and continue to seek justice.

Our areas of focus include educating our community through a Monthly Speaker Series, coupled with educational resources that we are currently compiling, as well as an internal examination of our policies and structures, focused on correcting Saybrook’s unintentional biases. We hope to provide a space for our community to both learn and discuss, towards individual and community-wide growth.

The Rollo May Scholarship: $5,000 

The Rollo May Scholarship is awarded to a continuing student of any of Saybrook University’s two colleges whose graduate work explicitly applies and extends the existential-humanistic contributions of Rollo May. Student work may include scholarship in the areas of personality theory, psychotherapy, art and literature, cultural criticism, existential encounters, or other topics clearly connected to the Rollo May tradition.

Alan Watts Student Scholarship: $5,000

This scholarship is named in honor of British philosopher Alan Watts, who was associated with Saybrook University in its formative years. The scholarship is awarded to an accomplished continuing student interested in the work and teachings of Alan Watts. Recipients seek to go beyond simplistic notions of what is, or of what should be, recognizing the need for exploration of oneself through various modalities ranging from meditation to humor, and the impact such practices have on our lives, on the continuing development of humanistic/transpersonal psychology and on our social order.

Leonard Shlain Student Scholarship: $1,500

T he Leonard Shlain scholarship is named in honor of former Saybrook trustee, Dr. Leonard Shlain. The scholarship provides $1,500 to an accomplished continuing student interested in the work and research of Dr. Shlain. These areas include creativity, the development of the human brain and neuroscience, art and science, human sexuality and the effects of the word and image on the human brain.

TSC Ph.D. student, Janice Jerome, one of the contributors with a chapter titled “’There is no Place Like Home!’: The Secret that Restored Me”, was recently published in Colorizing Restorative Justice: Voicing Our Realities. This new book explores issues about restorative justice and practices situated in white supremacist settler societies with deep roots in European colonization. Janice’s chapter focuses on how restorative justice helped her to embrace a difficult past.

TSC Ph.D. student, JMarie Johnson-Kola, was invited to give a keynote presentation at the Washington State PTA’s Annual Convention, held May 17, 2020. JMarie attended this virtual conference where she presented  Transformative Resident Engagement: 8 Essential Attitudes.

Dean Donald Moss
In June 2020, Dean Donald Moss was elected as a Board Member for Division 30 (hypnosis) of the American Psychological Association, to serve from 2020-2022. He is also the Fellows Chair for Division 30. In June, Moss also delivered a two-part series on “Practice Standards and Ethical Practice in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Practice.” In July 2020, he completed a podcast for the “Chicago Psychology Podcast Series,” about his Pathways book series, which emphasize the integration of self-directed behavior change and lifestyle modification with professional treatment. The Podcast will be available at  https://chicagopsychologypodcast.com/  Moss has also prepared a virtual lecture for the American Psychological Association virtual conference, scheduled for August 5 through August 9. His lecture is on “Physiological Monitoring to Enhance Clinical Hypnosis and Hypnotically -Assisted Psychotherapy.

Beth has a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine: Health Systems, from Saybrook University, a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Walla Walla University and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Washington State University. Beth has the "Master Personal and Executive Coach" certification through the College of Executive Coaching and has the National Board Certification for Health & Wellness Coaches (NB-HWC).
