Deanna Mykel Shepard
June 21, 1995 - July 21, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Deanna Mykel Shepard, 27, of San Antonio, Texas. A natural-born leader with remarkable ambition, Deanna made a lasting impact on her peers, community, and colleagues. Although she served the NSNA Board of Directors for less than a year, she left a lasting impact. Deanna was deeply committed to advocating for her fellow nursing students and for patients. As the chair of the Council of State Presidents, she supported state leaders in their efforts to develop successful state NSNA chapters.
Ms. Shepard’s inspiring leadership touched many lives. There was nothing she loved more than engaging others and understanding their perspectives and needs; information she used to improve whatever she could for the benefit of all. She was the President of the University of the Incarnate Word Student Nurses’ Association, working tirelessly to secure two new awards from the Texas Nursing Students’ Association (TNSA). Ms. Shepard also served as president of the TNSA.
Beyond her outstanding career performance, Deanna was genuinely concerned with her local community and those closest to her heart of gold, especially her adoring mother, Britt Shepard. She enjoyed learning new languages, leading Vacation Bible School, and selflessly helping others in any way possible. This extraordinary woman had a knack for bringing people together, whether it was to gather fellow nursing students for a study session or to rally state presidents to accomplish common goals.
Ms. Shepard is fondly remembered for her passion, integrity, enthusiasm for service to others, and for her caring nature. She served the National Student Nurses’ Association with pride and determination. Although she departed our world far too soon, her legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.
