Scaling Impact: Restoration, Recognition, and Record-Breaking Achievements
This past quarter, Global Forest Generation and our partners made significant strides in ecosystem restoration, conservation leadership, and global recognition. From a record-breaking tree-planting milestone to a feature on CNN’s Call to Earth, our work continues to drive meaningful change.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are restoring landscapes and securing a more resilient future.
In December, the Aquia community in Peru, in collaboration with Acción Andina partner ECOAN, achieved a remarkable milestone—planting 150,000 native trees in a single day. This large-scale effort is a critical step toward restoring high-altitude forests and enhancing local water security for communities. This is a huge win for community-led restoration!
CNN’s Call to Earth just highlighted Acción Andina and its groundbreaking work in restoring high-altitude Polylepis forests in the Andes! The feature showcases how local communities are leading large-scale reforestation efforts, securing water sources, and protecting ecosystems—work that has already resulted in nearly 12 million trees planted.
News You Need to Know
Global temperatures continue to break records. January 2025 was officially the hottest January ever recorded, surpassing expectations despite the transition to La Niña, which typically brings cooler conditions. Scientists are now questioning whether climate change is pushing Earth’s systems into new, unforeseen territory. Rising ocean temperatures, changing atmospheric patterns, and ongoing fossil fuel emissions are accelerating warming faster than predicted.
A recent article from Ecologi explores the shift from tree-planting metrics to holistic landscape restoration, and Global Forest Generation and CEO Florent Kaiser are at the forefront of this conversation. Florent emphasizes that Acción Andina is not just about planting trees—it’s about restoring entire ecosystems for water security and long-term resilience.
Feature: Rewilding the World
GFG CEO Florent Kaiser recently joined Ben Goldsmith for a conversation on rewilding, restoration, and the responsibility we all share in caring for our planet. He highlights the critical role of communities already on the frontlines of environmental crises and the need for collective action to restore ecosystems globally.
Check out two recent papers co-authored by Constantino Aucca to learn how community leadership and holistic restoration are key to lasting impact. One explores ancient Inca agricultural practices that balanced food security with ecosystem health, while the other examines the social and governance factors that make high Andean forest restoration successful.
Your Impact in Action:
The latest from
Thanks to your support, Acción Andina has launched its seventh year of community-led conservation across high Andean landscapes. Our partners are making remarkable strides in reforestation, water security, and ecosystem protection, ensuring lasting environmental impact.
Here are some key milestones our local partners achieved this past quarter (October - December 2024):
Record-Breaking Reforestation: 1.25 million native trees were planted, including 150,000 trees in a single day in Aquia, Peru with ECOAN. In Ecuador, Andean Adventures planted its one-millionth tree since joining Acción Andina.
Expanding Water & Conservation Efforts: 15 new conservation agreements were signed, ensuring long-term protection of highland forests. FONAG in Ecuador expanded school-based water conservation programs, while Fundación Bosquizar in Argentina strengthened local conservation efforts through new community partnerships.
Empowering Future Leaders: More than 300 individuals participated in 25+ leadership training workshops, including the First International Meeting of Acción Andina Technicians in Peru, which brought together 63 participants from 15 organizations to advance ecosystem restoration strategies.
Protecting Forests from Wildfires: 2,500 people were trained in wildfire prevention across 10 workshops, with 45 km of fencing installed to safeguard critical habitats. ECOAN in Peru and Fundación Bosquizar in Argentina led fire prevention training and patrols in reforested areas.
Every milestone reflects the power of local leadership and collective action in restoring the Andean highlands.
