An MGH Radiology Research Newsletter

July 2023

Just a brief note for today.

The brutal heat wave that has engulfed Boston and much of the rest of the world hasn't slowed researchers in the Mass General Department of Radiology. As you will see below, they have been as busy and as productive as ever. And they have been busy and productive in a diversity of areas, reminding us of the very broad impact of radiology research.

We'll see you again next month. For now, stay cool, everyone.

Daily Statin Medication Reduces Risk of Major Cardiovascular Events by More Than One-Third in People Living with HIV

The department's Michael T. Lu, MD, MPH, and colleagues have reported the primary results from REPRIEVE, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of pitavastatin to prevent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE, myocardial infarction and stroke) in people with HIV. The results were published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The trial randomized 7,769 participants from 12 countries to pitavastatin or placebo. The primary result is that the pitavastatin arm had 35% lower risk of MACE than placebo over median 5 years of follow-up. The researchers anticipate that REPRIEVE will change prevention guidelines and improve the care of millions of people with HIV.

REPRIEVE is the work of a multidisciplinary team at MGB and around the world. Trial co-PIs are Dr. Lu (co-director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center, Mass General Department of Radiology), Steve Grinspoon, MD (chief of the MGH Metabolism Unit), Pamela Douglas, MD (Duke University), and Heather Ribaudo, PhD (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health).

Op-Ed: Congress Can Eradicate Hepatitis C and Reduce the Deficit at the Same Time

Jagpreet Chhatwal, PhD, director of the Institute for Technology Assessment in the Mass General Department of Radiology, co-authored a Stat News Op-Ed about the Biden administration's proposed initiative to eliminate hepatitis C in the US. He and colleagues have estimated that the initiative will avert 20,000 cases of cancer, 49,100 cases of diabetes, and 25,000 cases of chronic kidney disease over a decade. It will save 24,000 lives.

Bruce Rosen on the Advanced Imaging Technologies Coming to the Martinos Center

In this video, Dr. Rosen describes several cutting-edge technologies that will advance research in the center and elsewhere in the coming years: the "Connectome 2.0" MRI scanner recently installed in the center, a PET insert for the center's ultrahigh-field (7T) MRI scanner, the first human-scale magnetic particle imaging (MPI) device, and the portable "FlexNIRS" optical imaging technology for a variety of applications.

Intimate Partner Violence Can Cause Brain Injury -- But There's Still Hope

Eve Valera, PhD, a researchers in the MGH Department of Psychiatry and an affiliated faculty member in the Martinos Center, discusses her work with brain injury in people who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) -- and emphasizes the importance of recognizing when such injury might have occurred.
