An MGH Radiology Research Newsletter

August 2023

It's been only a couple of weeks since the last issue of this newsletter but I wanted to share two bits of news. First, the 6th annual Neuroscience Day at Mass General is coming soon: on Sept. 14. This event has always proved fun and highly informative, so mark your calendars! Also, if you'd like to present a poster, please note the poster registration deadline of August 26.

Second, I'd like to take this opportunity to extend a hearty congratulations to the Department's Susanna Lee, MD, PhD, on her receipt of a 2023 RSNA Lifetime Honored Educator Award.

You can read more about both of these items below. You'll also find additional news and features from the Department.

Until next month!

Susanna Lee, MD, PhD, Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) has named Susanna I. Lee, MD, PhD, a recipient of a 2023 RSNA Lifetime Honored Educator Award. The award recognizes individuals for their dedication to to furthering the profession of radiology by delivering high-quality educational content through publications, mentoring, and teaching. The award is bestowed upon RSNA members who have earned four RSNA Honored Educator Awards.

In addition, June of this year, Dr. Lee was selected as the inaugural editor of Radiology Advances, RSNA’s first exclusively open-access journal. "Dr. Lee is the ideal individual to lead this effort,” said Jeffrey S. Klein, MD, RSNA Board Liaison for Publications, "given her broad knowledge of the research landscape and extensive editorial experience serving multiple publications, including having served on our Radiology and Radiology In Training editorial boards over the past several years."

Congratulations to Dr. Lee!

When the X-Ray Was Young, and a Little Bit Scary (Part 2)

In the second part of this series, we continue to explore the many, varied, occasionally silly ways in which the residents of Boston reacted to the discovery of the new type of light -- and highlight some of the earliest press reports of X-ray imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital.

We also answer the question: how does Nikola Tesla fit into all of this?

Machine Learning Advances Ultrasound Imaging of the Liver

In a pair of recently reported studies, a team of researchers with the Center for Ultrasound Research & Translation (CURT) explored the use of machine learning to improve ultrasound imaging in liver disease. In a recent conversation, team member Abder-Rahman Ali, PhD, lead author of both of the studies, walked us through the findings of each.
