Golf Skills: On-Course Strategies

When you step onto the tee box, you're not just playing golf—you're solving a puzzle. Course management is all about making smart decisions that match your skill level, the layout of the hole, and the conditions around you. Instead of always reaching for driver, think about where you want your next shot to be. Is there a bunker guarding the green? A narrow fairway that rewards accuracy over distance? Planning ahead helps you avoid trouble and play to your strengths.

One key strategy is knowing your yardages and choosing clubs that give you the best chance to stay in play. If you hit your 3-wood straighter than your driver, use it! If you’re confident with your wedge game, aim to leave yourself a full swing instead of an awkward half-shot. Pay attention to pin positions, slopes, and wind direction. A smart player doesn’t just react—they anticipate. That means sometimes laying up short of water or aiming away from the flag to avoid a risky downhill putt.

Great course management also means staying mentally tough. If you hit a bad shot, don’t chase hero recovery plays—get back in position and minimize the damage. Think like a caddie: what’s the safest route to the hole? What’s the smartest play for your game today? By managing the course instead of letting it manage you, you’ll score better, feel more confident, and enjoy the challenge. That’s the kind of growth First Tee is all about.

Life Skill

Just like managing a golf course, planning for your future—whether it’s college, a career, or both—starts with knowing where you want to go and how to get there. In golf, you don’t just swing and hope. You think ahead: where’s the best landing spot, what’s the safest route, and how do you avoid hazards? Life works the same way. If you’re aiming for a specific college, trade program, or career field, success comes from setting a target and making smart choices along the way.

Think about your strengths and interests, just like you would on the course. If you’re great at science or tech, maybe STEM programs or coding bootcamps are your fairway. If you love working with people, maybe business, education, or healthcare is your green. Planning doesn’t mean locking yourself into one path—it means being ready to adjust when things change, just like laying up short of a water hazard when the wind picks up. Research schools, internships, and career options the same way you’d study a course map: with curiosity and strategy.

And remember: mistakes happen. A bad shot or a tough semester doesn’t define your round—or your future. What matters is how you respond. Stay focused, learn from the experience, and keep moving forward. First Tee teaches that golf is more than a game—it’s a training ground for life. So next time you’re on the course, practice your planning skills. They’ll help you score better today and build a future that fits your goals, your talents, and your dreams.
