Winter Scene FAQ

Question: How can I make a frozen pond?

Answer: Prepare your water areas as usual and pour Realistic Water™. While it is still wet, lightly sprinkle Soft Flake Snow™ on top. This will create a glazed, frosted look to simulate a frozen, icy surface. Click here to view a demonstration of modeling frozen water.

Question: How do I give a matte-white snow base a crystalized, icy look?

Answer: Mix a tiny amount of fine, iridescent glitter with Soft Flake Snow™ until the desired look is achieved, keeping in mind that a little goes a long way. Spray an already modeled snow base with Scenic Cement™ and apply the mixture while glue is wet. You can also mix glitter with Water Effects® before modeling icicles.

Featured System: The Utility System

Power poles and utility lines are everywhere in the real world but are often missing from layouts. The Utility System is a quick way to create the illusion of working power and communication lines on a layout.

Each Utility Pole is pre-wired and designed to work together with placement in mind, so there's no guesswork. Run Double Cross Bars along railroad tracks to simulate communication lines, and place Single Cross Bars down city streets to represent power poles.

Then, further enhance the realism of the scene by installing the Transformer Connect Set to imitate supplying power to buildings.(Pair with Chain-Link Fence to further realism.)

The Utility System allows you to create the illusion of working power and communication lines, while the Substation distributes power to those utility lines. This models a power-grid on your layout, adding that piece of missing realism. The Utility System is available in N, HO and O scales.

Tip of the Month: Adding Snow

Woodland Scenics has a few helpful products to add realistic snow to landscape and details. Dab Flex Paste™ on evergreen and conifer tree branches and needles to simulate snow piles commonly found on those trees. For deciduous trees that have dropped their leaves, paint thin strips of Flex Paste™ on the top side of the branches and around the bottom of the trunk.

Dab Flex Paste on stumps, dead branchy bushes, etc. Apply Flex Paste on the roof of buildings, exterior trim, pilasters and ether areas where snow would build up. Sprinkle some Soft Flake Snow™ over the surfaces detailed with Flex Paste, if desired.
