CELEBRATING FAIR HOUSING MONTH IN SCHAUMBURG
April is Fair Housing Month, which celebrates the passage of the Fair Housing Act in April 1968. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other real estate-related transactions because of membership or perceived membership in a protected class. Protected classes include race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin. In both Illinois and Cook County, the fair housing law is extended to include additional protected classes. The village is committed to promoting fair housing and maintains a resources webpage found on the village’s website.

On Thursday, April 7, Open Communities will host a Fair Housing 101 webinar. Attendees will learn about the protected classes under the federal, state, and local fair housing laws. The webinar will also explain reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities, dealing with tenants who require service animals, who is liable under the Fair Housing Act, and how fair housing laws are enforced. To register, visit the webinar registration website.
