LURIE CHILDREN'S TO ESTABLISH CUTTING-EDGE PEDIATRIC OUTPATIENT CENTER IN SCHAUMBURG

On April 23, Lurie Children’s held a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating its upcoming $60 million, 75,000 square-foot state-of-the-art outpatient center in Schaumburg. This initiative reflects Lurie Children’s steadfast commitment to expanding access to high-acuity pediatric healthcare in Schaumburg and the northwest suburbs.

Strategically located at 1895 Arbor Glen Blvd., this center will offer a comprehensive range of pediatric services, including specialty care, therapeutic/rehabilitation and diagnostic/imaging. Notably, it will feature the region's first pediatric-only Ambulatory Infusion Center (AIC) outside a hospital setting, revolutionizing pediatric cancer care. The AIC will be supported by an onsite compounding pharmacy, laboratory and blood bank. With anticipated patient visits exceeding 60,000 in its inaugural year and employment opportunities for 85 full-time staff members, Lurie Children’s Outpatient Center promises to redefine pediatric healthcare accessibility and excellence in the region. Construction on the project is underway and is expected to be completed in fall 2025. For more information on Lurie Children’s, visit the website.

POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES 11TH NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT ACCREDITATION STATUS

The Schaumburg Police Department was recently awarded its 11th national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®) in the Law Enforcement program for continuing to meet the highest professional standards of public safety.

The purpose of CALEA’s accreditation programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence. The Schaumburg Police Department was initially accredited in 1986 and was the first in the State of Illinois to earn the distinction.

The accreditation process includes public safety agencies that voluntarily demonstrate how they meet professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery. The Schaumburg Police Department underwent a rigorous self-assessment and meticulous site-based assessment of policies, practices, and processes against internationally accepted standards by independent assessors. Public feedback was collected to promote community trust and engagement, and structured interviews were conducted with members of the department to assess the agency’s effectiveness and overall service delivery capacities. CALEA’s 21-member Board of Commissioners reviewed all findings and determined the department achieved accreditation status. To learn more, read the full release on the village's website.

OUTDOOR WEATHER ALERT SIRENS RECEIVE UPGRADES

When dangerous storms travel through the Schaumburg area, they can cause extensive damage. Schaumburg has nine outdoor weather alert sirens strategically located throughout the village to provide advanced notice of severe weather. Since 2019, the village has been upgrading its sirens with better technology. The new technology includes a battery backup system to ensure the siren remains operational even if a power outage occurs in the siren’s immediate area. This upgrade was essential because it ensures residents who may be outside during inclement weather can receive as much advance notice as possible to allow them to find adequate shelter.

The emergency dispatch center activates the outdoor warning sirens based on the warning area “polygon” that the National Weather Service provides during severe weather. The sirens will be activated for a confirmed sighting of a tornado, the receipt of a tornado warning, or reports of significant winds over 70mph with golf ball-sized hail. It is important to remember that the warning sirens will only be activated within the warning polygon, meaning certain parts of the Schaumburg area may be activated while others are not.

As a reminder, weather alert sirens are designed to alert people outdoors to seek shelter but are not intended to be heard indoors. To ensure you are notified of all emergency weather alerts, activate the WEA alerts on your phone, have an emergency radio at home as a backup, or download a weather app that includes severe weather notifications. WEA alerts will use your phone’s GPS to give you warnings based on your location, not just your home location. It is the best option. Reference the National Weather Service website for more information on WEA alerts.

TAKE YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY

The village celebrated Take Your Child to Work Day on April 25 by welcoming 20 children and their 15 parents to accompany them on a day of learning and to celebrate the role that local government plays in the community. Village Manager Brian Townsend kicked off the day by welcoming the young visitors to Village Hall who were then able to tour various departments and learn about different services offered by the village. The group also visited village-owned facilities including Schaumburg Regional Airport and Wintrust Field where the Schaumburg Boomers play. Not only did the day allow children to learn more about what their parents do for a living and other critical services provided by local government, but it also served as a great way to promote careers in public service to future generations.
