LOCAL 4092 PURCHASES GIFTS FOR FAMILIES IN NEED
This year, the Local 4092 membership adopted 11 local families in need and purchased over $6,300 in gifts, which included clothing, toys, games, books, bedding, and gift cards. In addition to shopping for these families, Local 4092 presented a $5,000 check to the Schaumburg Township to continue assisting local families! The money for the gifts plus the donation to the Township is all raised through the Annual Firefighter Charity Softball Tournament.
This tradition started back in 1990 when several firefighters learned of a single mother who wasn’t able to purchase gifts for her son. The firefighters pooled their own money and came up with $400 to buy gifts for the family plus a local senior. You can learn more about the association's charity events on their website.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION: ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY
The Schaumburg Township District Library began its annual One Book, One Community program on Dec. 1 with plenty of copies of this year's book, This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger. The purpose of the reading program is to bring the community together and unite in conversation about the book and its themes. Kids can join in on the conversation by reading the selected picture book, chapter book or young adult novel similar in theme. Now through the month of February, the library will be hosting related discussions, an art show, author visits and more. The program's official Kickoff Event takes place from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Central Library with The History Singers musical duo, sweet treats and free copies of this year's One Book, One Community pick while supplies last. For more information, visit the website.

SFD Helps Decorate Tree at Friendship Village
Recently, members of the Schaumburg Fire Department (SFD) helped the residents of Friendship Village of Schaumburg decorate their atrium tree for the holidays. The firefighters' knowledge of ladders proved useful in reaching the high spots of the 20-foot-tall tree.
Residents sang carols while watching the fire personnel place ornaments and decor on the tree. The fire department was happy to help spread cheer to others this holiday season.

Drive Merry, Bright and Sober This Holiday Season
Every 45 minutes, a person was killed in an alcohol-related crash in 2020. With the holidays in full swing, the Schaumburg Police Department has partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation to ensure motorists arrive safely to their destinations with the high visibility "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Drive High. Get a DUI." traffic safety campaign. Before the holiday fun begins, make a plan for a sober ride home, report impaired drivers to the Schaumburg Police Department, and always buckle up! A seatbelt is the best way to ensure the safety of vehicle passengers. For more information, visit the police department's website or call 311 in Schaumburg.
