The Village of Schaumburg reminds residents that it is the beginning of coyote mating and whelping season, which usually lasts through May. At this time, coyotes may appear more frequently and act aggressively to protect their pups. Coyotes are typically found in brushy areas, wooded edges, and open grasses - not in heavily wooded areas, as many believe. It is not uncommon to see a coyote running through village neighborhoods.

Be sure to follow these tips to keep your family and pets safe during mating season:
  • Coyotes are naturally shy of human contact. However, if you encounter a coyote, make yourself big and loud to scare it away. A bell, whistle or any item that can be used to make noise is recommended.
  • Keep your cats indoors, especially at night. Studies have found that cats make up a substantial part of a coyote's diet in some parts of Cook County.
  • Small dogs can also be a food source and a perceived threat to coyotes looking after their pups. Keep dogs on a non-retractable leash and stay nearby. Coyotes are less likely to approach pets accompanied by their owner.
  • Be aware of your surroundings while on walks. Coyotes can learn your schedule, so frequently switch up your walking routine.
  • Do not leave food out for coyotes or other wildlife. If you have a birdfeeder, rake up fallen seeds to avoid attracting small animals that coyotes feed on.
  • Educate children on how to identify a coyote and instruct them to act like a monster or bear if one comes in their presence.
