Schaumburg Village President Tom Dailly selected Cultural Commission member Esha Patel to be appointed to serve as village trustee, filling a vacancy created by the Dec. 2 passing of longtime village trustee Frank Kozak. Patel’s appointment was approved by Village Board members at the Jan. 10 Village Board meeting. Following the unanimous approval of Patel’s appointment, she was immediately sworn in to begin serving her term.
Patel has served on the village’s Cultural Commission for 1.5 years and has been a resident of Schaumburg since 2008. She was born and raised in Gujarat, India, and came to the United States in 1996.
“I am honored to be considered by Mayor Dailly and the Board to fill the role of village trustee,” Patel said. “I have enjoyed my time serving others, whether it be through my professional career or through various other organizations. I look at this as an opportunity for me to contribute new ideas while also preserving the tradition of thoughtful leadership that has made Schaumburg such a great place to live, work, and visit.”

As part of the redevelopment plan for 90 North, the village purchased two commercial office buildings located at 1920/1930 Thoreau Dr. and helped relocate all tenants. This week, demolition began on the two buildings to make way for Phase 2 of the Entertainment District. Village staff continues to work on securing prospective users and businesses for 90 North.
Phase 1 of the village’s 23-acre Entertainment District will start with Andretti Indoor Karting & Games, to be located near the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel and Meacham Road. Construction on the new 80,000-square-foot entertainment/event destination will break ground in 2023 and is anticipated to open in 2024. Additional envisioned district amenities include another entertainment venue, another restaurant, and a 900-space parking deck with an elevated walkway connecting it to the Renaissance Hotel.

RESIDENTIAL REBATES APPROVED
At the Jan. 10 Village Board meeting, Schaumburg trustees approved an initiative to provide a one-time $150 residential rebate payment to owner-occupied households to assist residents impacted by the pandemic and with ongoing inflation. Because millions were lost in key taxes and revenues at the start of the pandemic due to various shutdowns, village officials were not able to provide such assistance previously but agreed now is the time to give back to the community.
The rebate will be provided to owner-occupied households. The village is currently determining how the program will be implemented and will provide more information in village communications once available.

Schaumburg trustees unanimously approved the village’s $217 million multi-year Capital Improvement Plan that includes $66 million in improvements slated for the fiscal year that begins May 1, 2023. The plan was approved at the Jan. 10 Village Board meeting. The village anticipates securing $53 million in grant funding, leaving $164 million to be funded through local sources. The plan anticipates spending approximately $8 million annually to improve residential streets. In FY 2023/24, the village will allocate an additional $1.8 million in Motor Fuel Tax funds to reconstruct commercial and industrial streets. The 2023 street improvement program will be available on the village’s website in the spring. To view the approved plan, please visit the website.

The companionship (non-medical) will be provided by volunteers vetted by the Village of Schaumburg. The program is now seeking volunteers. If interested, please visit the village’s website, contact Kathy Henkelman or dial 311 in Schaumburg.
