KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE FROM CARBON MONOXIDE DANGERS
As temperatures continue to stay low and furnace usage remains high throughout the winter, it is especially important to be proactive in order to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) dangers in the home. Without proper maintenance, your furnace could be responsible for releasing the poisonous gas. An inspection will not only help prevent carbon monoxide problems, but also possible breakdowns. If you have a high efficiency furnace, be sure to check that outdoor air intakes and vents have not been blocked - especially after a snowstorm when snow drifts can form and block these vents, which could increase CO dangers.
The best safeguard from this odorless and colorless gas is to keep a maintained carbon monoxide detector in the home. The Schaumburg Fire Department recommends keeping a CO detector within 15 feet of all bedrooms to give residents warning of the poisonous gas while asleep. Do not place a detector directly in the kitchen, laundry room, or furnace area. These rooms naturally have safe, low levels of carbon monoxide and could possibly cause a false alarm. Like a smoke detector, a CO detector should be tested twice a year and given a change of batteries. If the alarm sounds, be sure to call 911 and move outside or to another ventilated location until the issue is investigated. More information on carbon monoxide safety can be found on the village's website.
With the new smoke detector law that took effect on Jan. 1, you may be wondering if your CO detector should be replaced. A new CO detector is not required so long as it is less than 10 years old and functioning properly. This new law did not change the requirements, and carbon monoxide detectors are still required by state law for all homes of any type. Read more about the smoke detector law online.

Tax Credits for Energy Efficient Home Improvements
With the increasing prices of energy, homeowners are encouraged to consider energy efficient home improvements now and in the future. Not only can these improvements reduce your overall energy bill, you also may be eligible for a tax credit. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has extended federal tax credits for energy efficient home upgrades through 2032. Additionally, homeowners may claim credit for qualifying home improvements on their 2022 federal tax returns. These new federal income tax credits provide up to $3,200 annually to lower the cost of energy efficient home upgrades by up to 30 percent. Eligible upgrades could include exterior windows and doors, water heaters, insulation materials, and air conditioners. Home builders and commercial building owners may also be eligible for tax credits or deductions. More information can be found on the IRS website.
