MAYOR DAILLY WELCOMES RAPYUTA ROBOTICS
On Jan. 25, Japan-based warehouse robot developers, Rapyuta Robotics, celebrated the opening of its first U.S. office and robot experience center in the Village of Schaumburg. The opening ceremony and ribbon cutting was held at their new office located at 935 National Parkway and featured congratulatory speeches by Mayor Tom Dailly and Hiroshi Tajima, Consulate General of Japan in Chicago.
During the ceremony, Rapyuta Robotics introduced the redesign of the interactive character on their picking assist robot, Rapyuta PA-AMR. These robots are used for picking and transporting products and are especially useful in the apparel industry to increase picking productivity by 200% or more.
Schaumburg is home to the second largest number of Japanese businesses with more than 60 Japanese companies. In addition, according to Rob Paral's Demographic, Social and Economic Trends in Schaumburg report, approximately 1,000 persons born in Japan now live in Schaumburg, making Japan the fourth leading country of origin for foreign-born residents in Schaumburg.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION PLAN APPROVED
Each year the Village of Schaumburg develops a Legislative Action Plan (LAP) to inform local officials and community stakeholders about specific issues impacting the community. This year's LAP was approved at the Jan. 24 Village Board meeting. The plan identifies three high-priority issues:
Ensure sustainable municipal budgets - Current legislation has limited local governments' access to revenue that could be used to provide vital public services. The village supports legislation to eliminate administrative fees imposed on locally levied taxes, restore shared state revenues, enable municipalities to collect hotel taxes for stays of 30 days or longer, and remove print requirements for public hearing notices and treasurer reports.
Protect local control – The enactment of laws and regulations that preempt local authority hinders the ability of local governments to meet the distinct needs of their community. The village supports legislation that enhances public safety by allowing the use of drone technology for crime prevention and opposes legislation that limits Tax Increment Financing (TIF) as a tool for economic development.
Reform public safety pension system - In 2019, Governor Pritzker signed Public Act 101-0610 consolidating police and firefighter pension funds. While this legislation will help preserve public safety pensions, it has resulted in significant increases to both local benefit obligations and recommended contributions. The village supports legislation to extend the amortization of these funds to 2050 or beyond and reduce the required funding target from 90% to 80%.

SCHAUMBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT ICE SAFETY TIPS
As the temperatures drop and ice begins to form, it is important to familiarize yourself with ice safety information in the event you ever find yourself trapped on or below the surface.
Clear and black ice formed from a body of water freezing over, four or more inches thick, is generally safe to walk on. However, white, opaque and gray ice can pose a hazard due to not being completely frozen.
If you fall through the ice, the most important thing to do is remain calm. Control your breathing and begin to search for the point you fell through with your arms. Once found, do not lift yourself back onto the ice. Kick or pull yourself back to the surface to avoid breaking the ice. When on the surface, roll toward the direction you came from to maintain an even weight distribution and avoid breaking the ice further.
All bodies of water within Schaumburg Park District boundaries utilize a red/green flag system to signify ice safety. Red means the ice has been determined unsafe to walk on while green signifies the ice is thick enough to walk on. Despite these systems, it is important to know that no ice is completely safe. If you do venture out on the ice, measure beforehand and always base your measurement on the amount of clear or black ice present.
With approximately 29 ponds and lakes throughout the village, the Schaumburg Fire Department’s Dive Team and emergency responders regularly runs drills throughout the winter months to ensure familiarity with local bodies of water and strengthen its water rescue skills. Visit the website for more information on the fire department or dial 311 in Schaumburg.
