The Schaumburg Barn is celebrating a record-breaking number of meals served in 2023! Last year, over 20,000 meals were served to older adults and adults with disabilities in the community. It is through the participation and support of its patrons that The Barn was able to reach this milestone and can continue to make a positive impact. To celebrate this milestone, a luncheon will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29 with food catered by Sweet Orange Pancake House & Café at a $5 suggested donation. If you are a senior or adult with a disability who would like to attend the luncheon, please register at least a week in advance by calling the Schaumburg Barn at (847) 524-7496.
Nutritious and delicious hot lunches are offered each day, Monday through Friday, for a small, suggested donation. In addition to enjoying a hot meal with friends, The Barn also offers daily to-go meals, a weekly five-pack of frozen meals, restaurant days, and a fresh salad bar on Tuesdays. In partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Market Days are hosted twice a month and provide free, nutritious food including fresh fruits, vegetables, and non-perishable groceries to older adults in the community. Attendees can also enjoy a large range of social activities and games, wellness clinics, and presentations at no cost. To learn more about The Barn, visit the website, dial 311 in the village, or call (847) 895-4500.

MOBILE CRISIS VAN HELPS ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE CONCERNS
The Schaumburg Police Department cares about the safety and well-being of the people in our community. To better address mental health and substance use concerns in Schaumburg, the Human Services Unit added a mobile crisis clinician to its team and constructed a mobile response van. This was made possible from funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration which was appropriated by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. Watch the video to take a look inside the Mobile Crisis Van and to learn more about the care and treatment that is available to residents. Additional information can be found on the website or by calling (847) 895-4500.

With the new year comes new state laws. More than 300 new laws took effect at the start of the new year in Illinois. Though many of the laws won't have an immediate or noticeable impact, here are a few laws to be aware of:
- House Bill 1540 prohibits the use of e-cigarettes/vapes in public places and within 15 feet of building entrances.
- House Bill 1541 bans utility companies from shutting off gas and/or electric services due to nonpayment of bills on days with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees or when there is a heat watch, advisory or warning.
- House Bill 2431 prohibits video conferencing or accessing social media while driving.
- House Bill 2789 forbids state-funded libraries from banning or removing materials due to partisan or religious disapproval.
- The Paid Leave for All Workers Act (Senate Bill 208) requires employers to offer paid vacation time for any reason. Workers will accrue one hour of paid time off for every 40 hours of work, totaling 40 hours.
