HELP RESTORE LOCAL FUNDING FOR OUR COMMUNITY
The Village of Schaumburg is joining communities across the state in urging Springfield to restore local funding for essential services and to fulfill the State’s agreement with municipal governments.
The Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF) is a portion of Illinois income taxes, paid by our local residents and businesses, that are collected by the State and redistributed back to municipalities on a per capita basis.
LGDF accounts for 8 percent of the Village of Schaumburg's annual operating budget. LGDF helps fund services that our residents rely on, including police, fire, public works and infrastructure improvements.
From the inception of Illinois’ income tax in 1969, the General Assembly agreed to allocate 1/12 of income tax revenue back to Illinois municipalities in lieu of a local income tax. In 1993, the General Assembly agreed to increase the allocation to 10 percent to ensure that municipalities have a reliable source of funding to invest in our communities. However, since 2011, the State has reduced the LGDF share from 10 to just 6.06 percent.
The Village of Schaumburg should be able to rely on predictable funding levels and consistent distribution of funds each year. State legislators have an opportunity to restore LGDF in 2022, which could help reduce the reliance on property and other taxes without increasing income taxes for our residents and businesses.
You can help by making your voice heard in Springfield. Please contact your State Senator and Representative and let them know that you support restoring promised LGDF funding this year. Click here for a list of contact information for your local representatives.

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF LANGSDORF'S DOOMSDAY CLOCK
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, stewards of the iconic Doomsday Clock, announced this week that the 2022 time remains at 100 seconds to midnight. Former Schweikher House owner and Schaumburg resident Martyl Langsdorf, designed the Doomsday Clock in 1947. Martyl and her husband Alexander, who was a Manhattan Project scientist, wanted to convey to the public the threat of nuclear proliferation. Martyl utilized the universally recognized symbol of a clock to demonstrate humankind's proximity to self annihilation, or midnight.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Martyl's clock design, which debuted on the June 1947 cover of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. The Clock also serves as a call-to-action to reverse the hands, which have been moved backwards before but have steadily inched forward over the past several years. The Clock's position is decided by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board in consultation with the Bulletin’s Board of Sponsors, which includes 11 Nobel Laureates.
Martyl's former home and studio, known as the Schweikher House, 645 S. Meacham Rd., was designed by Modernist architect Paul Schweikher and is Schaumburg's only building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home is open to the public for tours and offers a variety of programming and events throughout the year. For more information, visit the Schweikher House website.

WINTER VEHICLE SAFETY TIPS FROM SCHAUMBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Schaumburg Police Department reminds residents to be extra cautious with their vehicles during the winter months. Cars warming up in driveways and parking lots are easy targets for car thieves. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to jump in and drive away. Locking cars with a spare key while warming up doesn't protect valuables inside cars or the cars themselves. Even if a car is locked, thieves can still break a window and drive away.
The Schaumburg Police Department recommends the following:
- Never leave vehicles running while unattended.
- Lock vehicles when unoccupied.
- Park vehicles in a garage whenever possible.
- If you must park in the street, park in a well-lit area.
- If your car is parked in a garage, open the garage door before turning on the ignition. Starting a car in a closed garage can produce poisonous gases.
- Carry registration and insurance cards with you.
- Consider investing in a steering wheel lock or car alarm.
- Remove all valuables from your vehicle.

Book an Outreach Presentation for Your Next Meeting
The village is seeking local service clubs, homeowners associations, places of worship, or social and cultural organizations who are interested in hosting an outreach presentation led by village staff. The purpose of the meetings is to educate residents about village programs, services and other trending topics. Presentations can be conducted in person or via Zoom, and discussion topics can be customized to the group's needs. If your Schaumburg organization is interested in coordinating an outreach presentation for your group's next meeting, contact Jason Pawlowski for more details and to schedule.
