CHECK PRESENTED FOR SCHAUMBURG'S FIRST ALL ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and his staff met with Schaumburg Village President Tom Dailly, village trustees, and others July 10 to present the village with a $166,000 check in support of the village’s proposal to implement an electric vehicle pilot program. The electric vehicle pilot program helps move forward some of the initiatives and concepts identified in the village’s comprehensive green action plan and advances the goals of several federal, state, and local initiatives.
The funding will be used to replace two aging vehicles, a 2013 Dodge Ram and a 2011 Ford F250 – both of which have internal combustion engines. The vehicles will be replaced with two all-electric Ford E-Transit Cargo Vans. The new vehicles will be used by the village’s Buildings Division, which will allow the village to maximize efficiency of building repairs by being able to store more material in the vehicles and minimize trips. Pilot program funding will also be used to install the charging infrastructure needed for the new vehicles.
Incorporating all electric vehicles allows the village to lower maintenance and fuel costs, reduce pollutants, collaborate with partners at ComEd and other regional stakeholders, and continue to advance sustainable initiatives.
The Village of Schaumburg owns and maintains a fleet of 153 police, fire, and public works vehicles. The electric vehicle pilot program was submitted by the Schaumburg Engineering & Public Works Department as a request to Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s Office for Community Project Funding. BE PREPARED FOR SEVERE WEATHER
The Northwest Central Dispatch System tests the local outdoor warning system on the first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. and is prepared to activate the system in Schaumburg when there has been a confirmed sighting of a tornado tracking toward the community; a tornado warning for the community issued by the National Weather Service (NWS); or reports of storm damage due to winds of 70 mph or greater along with golf ball sized hail. Sirens will go off every 10 minutes until the warning expires. The warning sirens will only be activated for the towns identified in the warning polygon identified by the NWS.
As a reminder, the outdoor warning system sirens are not designed to alert residents inside their homes or vehicles but rather to warn people who are outside to seek shelter. Most people will not be able to hear the warning sirens inside their homes. To receive severe weather-related alerts when you are inside a residence, the National Weather Service and state and local emergency management officials strongly encourage people to have either a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All Hazards Weather Radio with battery backup or Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) installed and configured on your mobile device. FEMA also offers a free mobile app that provides fast and reliable weather alerts from the NWS.
What to do in a tornado: Continue to listen to local weather news to stay updated and go to your basement, safe room, or an interior room away from windows. If you are outside, seek shelter inside a sturdy building immediately if a tornado is approaching. Learn more about how to stay safe and the differences between watches and warnings by visiting the National Weather Service website.

Styrofoam Recycling Facilities
Styrofoam recycling can be costly as the material is lightweight, bulky, and difficult to clean, which is why foam recycling is less common. At this time, the village’s garbage and recycling provider, LRS, does not offer Styrofoam recycling to Schaumburg residents. However, there are Styrofoam recycling locations that are open to the public in nearby communities.
The following locations offer Styrofoam recycling at no charge:
- Abt Electronics: 1200 N. Milwaukee Ave., Glenview
- Chicago Logistic Service: 701 Wesemann Dr., West Dundee
- Dart Container Corporation (two locations): 310 Evergreen Dr., North Aurora and 7575 S Kostner Ave., Chicago
Additional information can be found on the village's website.
