RETIRED SCHAUMBURG POLICE OFFICER TAKES HONOR FLIGHT
Schaumburg Police Department retiree and Army veteran Ken Chrobak recently returned from a Day of Honor in Washington D.C. with Honor Flight Chicago. The program recognizes the bravery and determination of war veterans with an all-expenses paid, one-day journey to tour memorials built in their honor at the nation's capital. Veterans are escorted by local police to each destination on the itinerary and are later honored at a formal ceremony at the World War II Memorial. Upon arriving back to Midway Airport, Chrobak was welcomed home by the Schaumburg Police Honor Guard, family, friends, and hundreds of others there to show thanks and gratitude.
Chrobak worked in the Schaumburg Police Department for 30 years. During his time he was awarded six honorable mentions, six group citations, and a director's letter of appreciation. He was known to be funny, hard-working and was highly respected among his colleagues.
Honor Flight Chicago trips are funded through donations, which can be made online. For more information on Honor Flight Chicago, visit their website.

HELP KEEP PARKWAY TREES HEALTHY
Though some much-needed rain was welcomed over the past week, it is critical to continue watering and caring for parkway trees during the warmer months, especially recently transplanted or young trees that are more vulnerable to drying out. Many young trees are equipped with a watering bag, which allows water to drip slowly into the soil around the roots. Residents are encouraged to fill the watering bag or, if no bag is provided, water from the trunk to the end of the branches on a weekly basis to increase the tree's chances of survival. Deeply soak the soil to avoid root growth near the surface. If a prolonged period of hot and dry weather is expected, trees may need to be watered more frequently.
In addition to watering parkway trees, the village requests residents' help in pruning tree sprouts from the trunks of more mature trees. Regular pruning helps trees grow large, beautiful and safe. Use hand pruners, loppers or a hand saw to remove the tree sprouts as close to the main trunk as possible. It is important to wear proper personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and gloves. If you feel uncomfortable removing the sprouts yourself, please contact Engineering and Public Works at (847) 895-7100 or dial 311 in Schaumburg so staff can remove the sprouts.
More information on tree care can be found on the village's website. Additional questions on tree care can be directed to Forester Frank Calvello at (847) 923-6688.
