K9 APOLLO RETIRES FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT
|
On May 27, Schaumburg Police Department K9 Apollo retired after eight years of dedicated service to the community. In May 2014, K9 Apollo selected Officer Nate Miller to become his partner. After spending six weeks training together at Vohne Liche Kennels, Officer Miller and Apollo returned to the Village of Schaumburg, ready to begin their partnership. On Aug. 15, 2014, Apollo was officially sworn in with the Schaumburg Police Department.
During his career, Apollo successfully alerted on hundreds of vehicle and building searches, resulting in the recovery of narcotics and oftentimes the seizure of money. Apollo also assisted in the apprehension of numerous criminals and located several missing individuals. Since joining the department, Apollo has worked every Septemberfest and National Night Out, participated in Cop on a Rooftop, ran several Special Olympics Torch Runs, walked in numerous parades, and performed more than one hundred K9 demos. Apollo has touched the lives of thousands of Schaumburg residents and has been a fixture in the community. He will be missed but will no doubt enjoy his retirement with the Miller family. Thank you for your service, Apollo!

ON-STREET, ACCESSIBLE PARKING SPACES AT PARKS
|
Recently, the Village Board approved an ordinance to allow one to two accessible, on-street parking spaces at six Schaumburg
Park District (SPD) facilities. Five of those park facilities currently have accessible parking available at:
- Apollo Park - 318 Gayton Ln. (parking spot on Kirkwall Ln.)
- Atcher Park - 730 S. Springinsguth Ln. (parking spot on Syracuse Ln.)
- Brandenburg Park - 600 N. Knollwood Dr. (parking spot on Knollwood Dr.)
- Jaycee Park - 922 S. Cornell Ln. (parking spot on Cornell Ln.)
- Knollwood Park - 321 N. Knollwood Dr. (parking spot on Knollwood Dr.)
Since not all SPD facilities provide accessible parking in an off-street parking lot, village staff worked with SPD staff to identify locations where on-street, accessible parking could be provided for facilities with programmed activities that do not have an existing parking lot near the field. These on-street, accessible parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible vehicles with an appropriately displayed handicap placard or license plate. Motorists are reminded that these on-street parking spaces are for accessible parking users only. As a reminder, the village-wide ordinance prohibiting on-street parking adjacent to recreational parks remains in effect. For more information, contact Rachel Benson or dial 311 in Schaumburg.
