CROSSROADS DEVELOPMENT APPROVED

The Village Board approved a new multi-tenant shopping center called Crossroads of Schaumburg that will feature a variety of new retail and restaurant uses located at the northwest corner of Meacham and Golf roads.

Proposed tenants for the space include restaurants such as Lazy Dog, Piccolo Buco, Cava, Velvet Taco, Crisp & Green, Panda Express, and Naansense.

The shopping center will be constructed on the vacant area previously occupied by the former Macy’s furniture store. The store was demolished in August 2023.

The newly constructed buildings will have iconic designs to reflect the importance of the location and the project. The project will also include site improvements, such as crosswalks and sidewalks, patios that will provide outdoor dining opportunities for restaurants, and professionally designed landscaping. Through this redevelopment of the area, the project aims to contribute positively to the economic vitality, aesthetic appeal, and overall community experience at this significant location within Schaumburg. For more information, dial 311 in the village or call (847) 895-4500.

Flag Day is observed each year on June 14, honoring when the Continental Congress officially made the Stars and Stripes the symbol of America in 1777. For more information on activities hosted by the Schaumburg Barn, visit the website.

WATER AND SEWER RATE CHANGES

The village recently approved a 3 percent increase for water and sewer rates that will allow the village to cover rising costs from anticipated increases from the Joint Action Water Agency (JAWA), the City of Chicago, as well as expenses tied to maintenance, capital projects, operating costs, and inflation. For customers with average water usage of 4,000 gallons per month, this rate change means an increase of $1.68 per month or $20.16 annually in the first year.

The rates will be increased 3 percent annually for the next five years, without changing the monthly customer charge. This strategy aligns with forecasts that indicate future increases and ensures the village’s rates are competitive with surrounding communities. New rates go into effect with water used starting May 1, which will be reflected on utility bills due in July.

The village worked with Engineering Enterprises, Inc. (EEI) of Sugar Grove, IL to conduct an independent study of the village’s water and sewer rates and their ability to properly fund water, storm, and sanitary utility operations and infrastructure needs. The goal of the study was to identify current and future financial needs with a specific focus on sustaining and improving essential infrastructure to continue to provide a reliable utility system for the community. Financial forecasts provided by JAWA indicated that water rates are projected to increase between 0.5 percent and 9.4 percent over the next five years. As part of the analysis, EEI provided a comparison of annual utility bills and current rates charged by all participating JAWA communities, which showed Schaumburg as having the third lowest rate when compared with Elk Grove Village, Streamwood, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, Hanover Park, and Mount Prospect.

The village purchases its water from the Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (JAWA), which purchases Lake Michigan water from the City of Chicago. The Village of Schaumburg’s public water supply is one of the highest rated water systems in the state with the highest rated water quality in the country. For more information on water and sewer services provided by the village, please call 311, if within village limits or contact the Water Billing Division at (847) 923-4520, or visit the website
